It proposed a new goal of limiting the “overshoot” of rising temperatures and eventually figuring out how to undo the temperature gains, a highly uncertain path.

spoiler, everyone in a position to steer away from climate apocalypse is vested in steering toward it

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 18 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

I'm still convinced a big reason for the AI push is the energy needs mean a full run on remaining fossil fuels.

The rational thing would be to let it keep developing in small labs while we transition to renewables. Then after solving the energy crisis we'd be able to try and scale up AI.

Doing AI at present scale without renewable energy is stupid for everyone that isn't making a shit ton off fossil fuels.

Even then, it doesn't solve the water issue either.

We couldn't afford to use AI even if it worked, that's what people are missing, we flat out can't afford the resources, we need them for humans right now.

I'm convinced they're going all in on AI because they know climate change is locked in, will be significantly faster and worse than advertised, is going to cause massive global upheaval, and they'll need a fully-automated totalitarian surveillance state and killbot army to protect themselves from the proles.

My bet is 3c by 2050, as in billions may starve in your lifetime.

This exactly!

Those in power thrive on scarcity.

If you see how China is using AI, it's drastically different than how the U.S. is. They're using it to benefit the country and the citizens, and are rapidly transitioning to renewables.

The US is going to be left with no resources and with people who hold trillions of dollars of a currency that everyone will agree is worthless.

Most are boomers who know they'll die in the next decade. They don't give a shit.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 10 points 14 hours ago

Reversing will be 10x harder than not emitting and we're failing at that. I'm not too hopeful.

Great Filter, y'all.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 18 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Ya know...

I always thought glaciers breaking off into rivers/lakes and causing massive inland tsunami like waves would be the thing that woke everyone up...

We're fucked if it wasn't enough

“There have been many plagues in the world as there have been wars, yet plagues and wars always find people equally unprepared.”

If Camu were around, he'd add global warming.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 3 points 16 hours ago

lol yeah, you'd think that. I've lost hope, if I'm honest. I'm fully convinced that we are completely fucked with this. The other day I was watching a news report about London running out of water. They interviewed a guy in his car, on a line, going to get some water so he could "finally shower" and have some drinking water for his kids. He said "this is nothing to do with climate change, this hasn't got anything to do with spraying too much deodorant" and I got confused by that. What the hell is he talking about deodorants?

But then I figured it out, this guy thinks the climate change is the same as the ozone layer hole that was a big thing 30-40 years ago. He was very sure of his opinions, said it with such conviction that he is correct.

How exactly do you reverse runaway feedback loops?

[–] Aqivex@fedinsfw.app 1 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

These ones?

We uh, can't.

Not in the timescale that matters to us, with the resources and technological development available at hand.

But generally speaking?

You would need to introduce a different, runaway feedback loop that modifies/cancels/counters the first.

Like fungi did when they learned to eat lignin, or cyanobacteria introduced when they started spitting out that horrible and nasty O2.

Time and scale are what will do us in.

We just didn't pace ourselves at all, societally speaking.

Weren't able to build the chemistry and engineering tools needed to meaningfully expand the scope of the system beyond our planet to access any other resources or solutions beyond it...

And still cannot agree to any meaningful planet side changes that might even remotely allow for later pipedreams, because they need to happen now.

The Futurama ice cube joke is funny, but we can't even attempt anything half as harebrained on a fraction of that scale.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 3 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

They're not yet at runaway. If we drop emissons to zero, then temperatures stabilize within a human lifetime

[–] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

You realize we're already locked in for between 4-10C in warming, with the highest probability being at 6C, right? That's if you stopped all emissions right now.

We'd be hit with an immediate 1-1.5C in warming as we lose the cooling effect of all the particulates (like diesel exhaust) in the atmosphere, pushing us to +3-3.5C. From there, the natural feedback loops take care of the rest.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 1 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

The amount locked in is more like 2°C if we did a crash shift off fossil fuels and meat. Those higher numbers presuppose that people won't forcibly shut down fossil fuel using plants and equipment before the end of its useful life.

[–] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

We're almost at 2C already and that's with the cooling effect from all of the particulates.

if what happened in Nepal wasn't a wake up call after...christ on a cracker...god knows how many wake up calls we've had no then we're just fucked and regulated to our fate.

We the "peons" want it but the powers that be look down on us and whisper "no."
