I would not be surprised if this was an attempt at giving us two far-right parties, one on power, one in symbolic opposition, with the Democratic party forced into an impotent third place.
Progressive Politics
Welcome to Progressive Politics! A place for news updates and political discussion from a left perspective. Conservatives and centrists are welcome just try and keep it civil :)
(Sidebar still a work in progress post recommendations if you have them such as reading lists)
The Democrats need no further help getting to an impotent place.
Musk could be trying to get Trump impeached.
I find it hard to believe that the America party has any chance of pulling more votes from Democrats than Republicans in any potential or hypothetical race.
Even if they platformed an actual socialist somewhere, typical Dem voters would either be strongly turned off by any musk association, or see America party and say "that's not a D" and vote for a Democrat.
The same centrists who have been shrieking "no matter who!" for 12 years will vote for musk's nazi pity party in a heartbeat if the alternative is a progressive.
You know, you might just be right...
Democratic voters are far more wishy washy than Republican voters. I can easily see them voting for this party.
Splitting the conservative vote is the silver lining on this. Democrats fucking love complacency - if they're "guaranteed a win," they'll continue moving right. Yeah, gay people can't get married anymore...but at least we're not those guys! Vote blue no matter who!
I'm clinging to the hope that this will at least rile up the right into supporting RCV but I doubt it will
Great points.
I would prefer if it split the duopoly votes so third parties could win seats.
They could split the Democrat vote or the GOP vote. Getting just 2-5% of the vote could swing the elections away from the GOP and give the Democrats a supermajority.
Musk could still be working with Trump, and this all could be a farce. The America Party could split the Democrat vote also. They could play spoiler in close elections and throw elections to the Republicans.
You are right.
It would only affect close races so as to swing the election.
Third parties would have to increase their turnout a good amount for them to have a chance in the national elections, but I think local elections can be impacted if more parties challenge the duopoly seats.
The Green Party and other third parties have won seats at the local level.
Most third parties struggle to raise more than a few million in a federal election. Could a $200 million super PAC get 10% of the vote and swing the election to the Democrats? They don't have to win. The American Party could just swing the election to the Democrats, and then the Democrats impeach Trump.
This party could split the vote and swing the election to the GOP too. This could all be BS, and Trump and Elon are still working together.

Correct.

It may be a bigger split between Trump and Elon due to the Epstein post Elon made.
"The speculation about Elon Musk having compromising information on Donald Trump related to the Epstein files."^[[1] https://lemmy.world/post/32636494]
You are right; we shall see how this goes. Some say Elon may lose interest between 6 months and a year.
It’s just going to take those dems who think yang is actually a good choice.
But also, by the next election we should expect rampant election meddling, so it doesn’t matter anyway. Perhaps this party is in response to the accusations of fraud because entire districts didn’t have a single blue vote? Just a fake party.
