“We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”

They must have some serious fuck you money.

its kinda funny because I think they did not like them so made this outrageous offer and paramount accepted and they made sure no caveats so they could do all sorts of things that would make paramount want to drop them but they are in too deep.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

well that's the thing. It's a catch 22. All the stuff that would make paramount want to drop them? People will get subscriptions to stream it just to see the episodes. So Paramount then wants to keep them from a money standpoint.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago

Not just subscriptions, Paramount will also get revenue from youtube for clips, and people share south park clips a lot.

I'm just surprised South Park generates that much money to be worth it. It's Microsoft buying Minecraft kinds of money.

[–] DaveyRocket@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That’s even crazier, Minecraft was just one problematic programmer.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 3 weeks ago

Notch wasn't even in the team anymore after he sold out to Microsoft so it wasn't really that much of a big deal

[–] degen@midwest.social 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Paramount is gonna bring about their own reckoning, I swear

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 11 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

They're playing both sides and making money from everyone.

It's like Elvis's manager selling both I love Elvis and I hate Elvis buttons.

[–] exasperation@lemmy.dbzer0.com 57 points 4 weeks ago

Most people refer to "fuck you money" as enough money to be able to say "fuck you" to anyone. They're a little bit different in that they started off by saying "fuck you" to anyone, and then got obscenely rich by doing that.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 35 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

At this point they could absolutely live off the residuals from Baseketball or Orgasmo and still be just fine with what they've got in the bank.

[–] neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 57 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

Don't forget about The Book of Mormon rights as well.

Both Matt & Trey are only one Oscar away from pulling off an EGOT.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 12 points 4 weeks ago

Heh well that was relatively popular. The other two are kind of reviled or unknown? Which was intended as a tongue in cheek way of stating that if they didn't make any more money from this day forward they'd still be just fine lol.

[–] dzsimbo@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 weeks ago

I like to think they'd be able to get an Oscar, if they really wanted to. Their style just doesn't mesh with the Academy's taste, and I don't think they want to produce something that's 'not them'.

Maybe they could pull off a world war 2 drama with Mr. Hanky. I don't think he'd have that high-pitched voice in the movie. He could play some scruffy veteran who learns about the darkness of himself and humankind, with 'Feeling Good on a Wednesday' levels of frisson. The funniest parts of the movie shouldn't be any more edgier than the sharpest parts of Benigni's Life is Beautiful. The poop will be drawn by the AI engine they created. Every character would be someone from South Park (real people though, so casting might get tough), and they would more or less be their own character in that situation, but not played out for laughs.

I guess the AI Mr Hanky might be a bit too much, but I think they could pull something off that is a stand-alone movie that pays fan service all the way. I'm not saying it's easy to win an Oscar, but Ricky Gervais made Kate Winslet predict she is getting one herself.

[–] jdr@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 weeks ago

They made Book of Mormon with Robert Lopez who has two EGOTs

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 weeks ago

Live off? The residuals?

Last report I saw, they were each worth like $600m.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Yeah, they signed a deal for $2b guaranteed (as in, even if the show got cancelled tomorrow, they'd still get paid in full) and probably with some great if not total protections against censorship.

It's the kind of deal that no sane TV exec would agree to (especially with the likes of Parker & Stone), but I guess the execs just wanted the show THAT much.

And they're taking great advantage of those loose if even existent reins! ✊🏻😄

This has been their thing for decades now!

I don’t really like South Park but I have always respected their level of “fuck you.” As an example, they went to the Oscars on acid in 2000.

You don’t have to have money to say fuck you, just an appropriate level of contempt.

I think they’d be doing this anyway.

[–] BeanGoblin@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 4 weeks ago

No, but having enough money to avoid consequences certainly helps.

[–] abrake@lemmy.world 7 points 4 weeks ago

they went to the Oscars on acid

That's not all of their shenanigans at those Oscars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSxHnsddg20

[–] remon@ani.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

As an example, they went to the Oscars on acid in 2000.

They also made fun of Phil Collins in several episodes after that (Trey lost the Oscar to him).

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 3 weeks ago

about 1.5bn worth of it.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Trey and Matt each have at least a billion in wealth, so yes.

[–] Elting@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

Good place to put a reminder that anyone who approaches a billion in wealth without having given 99% of it to charity is a sociopath.

“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of ‘South Park’ to ‘South America,'” the pair shared in a statement. “We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”

[–] Kaput@lemmy.world 85 points 4 weeks ago (4 children)

Its time for Team America 2 Make America America again.

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 23 points 4 weeks ago
[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

Holy crap that would be incredibly. Perfect name too.

[–] robear@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 weeks ago

I mean Team America is a solid satire until it ends in an unironic endorsement of US imperialism.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 28 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

If they changed the name to “Donald Trump is a child rapist”, would paramount be obligated to display the full name on their platform?

[–] SillyMe@piefed.social 10 points 3 weeks ago

only if the show is running for office. given the current supreme court don't be surprised if a television show is soon allowed to do that. corporations are people after all, why wouldn't a television show be?

[–] Opisek@piefed.blahaj.zone 25 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I had to triple check it's not the onion. Absolutely based.

[–] Akuchimoya@startrek.website 20 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

The other day, I commented that I couldn't tell if the headline that Trump wanted to change New Mexico to New America was real or satire. And reading this headline, I also couldn't tell if it was real or satire.

Although, South Park is satire, so I guess them doing it is... both real and satire?

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 12 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] TargaryenTKE@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Delicious AND painful

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

I'm just worried about other people doing this unironically and co-opting the message. The message that we live in incredibly stupid times.

[–] Stolas@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah this is how the internet has been functioning as of late.

[–] MurrayL@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Idiots have always taken South Park at face value, rather than realising they’re the ones it’s making fun of. That’s the nature of satire. You can’t fix stupid.

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

I mean of course they will. I love those dudes
