"cheaper than the Index"

I want to beat Sam Altman to death with my bare hands.

[–] the_q@piefed.social 1 points 16 minutes ago

Do it. Be the Luigi in the world you want to see.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 4 points 39 minutes ago

Cut me a slice of that action.

By that, I mean cut off his face and give it to me so I can mount it on the wall.

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 hour ago

I miss the time when you could just buy things.

USB 2.0 is sort of disappointing, though realistically, how often will I actually be transferring files to this device?

I guess I can do some testing of this myself right now with my phone, but I'll ask for anyone who is familiar: should I expect local file transfers over SSH via Wi-Fi to be faster than local file transfers via USB 2.0 anyway?

The prices are about what I expected. Could be worse. What annoys me a little bit is that in addition to being another lottery for an opportunity to buy, you can only choose one model ahead of time. I would probably buy the 1TB model if I couldn't get the smaller one. But I don't think I'm going to volunteer for the large model and give up my chance to buy the cheaper one. Might ask my nephew to put in a 1TB reservation...

[–] SoupBrick@pawb.social 8 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

From the news I heard, the expected price was around $1,500. I was pleasantly surprised.

[–] hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 hour ago

Same, this is the best I could've hoped for considering the current conditions.

Though it saddens me for how cheap it could've been if the world didn't go crazy. Still spendy, but sub 1k would've been really nice

[–] Carmakazi@piefed.social 7 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

It's inconvenient but understandable considering how vulnerable Valve hardware is to scalping and money laundering right now.

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 6 points 1 hour ago

That explains why they have the lottery, but I don't understand why they don't have an "any model" list. They did for the Steam Machine.

[–] EonNShadow@pawb.social 3 points 1 hour ago

I fully expected $1600 US, so I'm pretty happy with where they ended up personally

[–] KraeuterRoy@feddit.org 6 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

It's very disappointing that you don't even get a charging cable for 1k+ 😾

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 10 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

Kinda. On the other hand, I have so many USB-C chargers by now that it would probably have stayed inside the box anyway.

[–] hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Exactly this, don't charge me for something I'm literally not gonna use.

These days, USB C is so ubiquitous, I have so many chargers on so many places, I literally do not want or need more.

Other people are different than me, sure, but I can't imagine I'm in the minority

[–] volore@scribe.disroot.org 6 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

I'm not saying either of you are wrong, just, actually make sure they're all 45W or more.

I have tons of cheap chargers that'll slow-charge a phone, but I had to go out of my way to find ones that would actually power my Deck, for instance. Else it would drain while charging, albeit slightly more gradually, unless I had it completely powered down.

[–] hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 minutes ago

Very true. Most of mine are two or more ports, arranged where the top port is 45 or or 65, the bottom ports are 45 or 30. I color code the cables, red or white for fastest, blue or black for slower.

Heck, my car charger will do 95w between its three ports. Got that thing after we had draining issues while we were both trying to play steam decks while parked for an extended time.

[–] Metostopholes@midwest.social 4 points 1 hour ago

I dunno, I already have a spare from a Steam Deck dock I barely use. Takes $29 off the price.

Let's fucking goooo!!!!

Here's me hoping Linux PCVR is sorted out by the time I can get my hands on one.

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 7 points 1 hour ago (5 children)

Streaming from a Linux PC wasn't working yet when LTT tested it on August 24th.

[–] TheAgeOfSuperboredom@lemmy.ca 1 points 30 minutes ago (1 children)

I find that hard to believe. I've been able to stream just fine from Steam to a Quest 2 for months. It's worked for years if you include using ALVR.

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 1 points 23 minutes ago* (last edited 13 minutes ago) (1 children)

Steam Frame has its own custom streaming hardware and drivers. Other types of VR-streaming working for other VR headsets isn't necessarily relevant. I'm sure they'll get it to work soon though, maybe even at launch.

[–] TheAgeOfSuperboredom@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 minutes ago

On the Frame itself, yes. On the PC side it's encoding and sending an audio/video stream and receiving inputs from the VR device over a network. They have implementations for other devices, so it stands to reason that they'd have an implementation for their own device. Maybe there are some kinks to work out (nvidia hardware, Wayland implementation, etc. ), but I'm sceptical that it "doesn't work". Especially since game journalism is full of hyperbole.

Then again, maybe I'll have an expensive paper weight on my desk for a while, but hopefully not! 😆

[–] gwheel@lemmy.zip 1 points 37 minutes ago

I don't know if that's a definite, vs not being able to stream from a steam machine specifically. You can already stream from linux pcs to other headsets, so I think the limitation is gamemode right now.

[–] Kyrias@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 hour ago

Through Steam? Hmmm...

[–] Quibblekrust@thelemmy.club 1 points 59 minutes ago

Oh shit! That would be a deal breaker for me.

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

When you actually receive one — in a acouple of months — it'll work.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 1 points 58 seconds ago

I don't think you're in any position to guarantee that, and people should not spend $1,000+ on a feature that does not yet exist.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

Thanks for the heads up!

Tbh, the price is about what I expected as well. Not horribly different from a fully decked out Valve Index when they were new, and theyre including the controllers alongsode the headset this time.

You'd hope it'd have been cheaper due to the lack of external sensors to buy, but inflation and ram/storage prices going up was inevitable. I just hope it's not DOA from people comparing it to Meta's (heavily subsidized) options

[–] EonNShadow@pawb.social 7 points 1 hour ago

I'm buying one because giving money to Meta simply isn't an option in terms of my own principles.

Fuck Mark Zuckerberg.

[–] technohacker@programming.dev 7 points 1 hour ago

GamersNexus made it a point to compare privacy policies between them in their review first and foremost, so that's a start

[–] Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

This is strange, this post shows up for me through API access, but won't show up for me when viewing this community online. There's a duplicate post from someone else that does show up everywhere, and is getting more upvotes, although this post is actually older.

Not sure what's going on.

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 3 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (2 children)

I think it's because Lemmy tries to merge the posts. When I look on Sopuli, I can initially only see the duplicate post, but when extending it it shows mine as a "cross post".

[–] nocturne@slrpnk.net 1 points 23 minutes ago (1 children)

When did Lemmy start merging posts?

[–] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 1 points 13 minutes ago (1 children)

It's just a UI thing on the default UI, but I think it has been there for a couple months at least.

[–] nocturne@slrpnk.net 1 points 7 minutes ago

Weird, i do not use the web interface much, but I have never seen that.

[–] Metostopholes@midwest.social 1 points 50 minutes ago* (last edited 21 minutes ago)

I made the other post, and for me it shows it was posted 5-6 minutes earlier. I didn't see this one when I posted it.

Maybe just something with federating between sopuli.xyz and pawb.social / midwest.social?

Edit: Both posts show in my app (Boost)

This comment also doesn't show up on the pawb post yet, so probably midwest <-> pawb federation.
