"Motorcycle section" puts me off this game more than anything else I've heard.

To my ear, "motorcycle section" screams single-level set-piece on rails with minimal gameplay designed to show off explosions. Just like that level where you man a minigun out the door of a helicopter. You know the one, from every game released in the 2010s.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 44 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Hey, I like those sections :(

[–] xthexder@l.sw0.com 43 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

All we had to do was follow the damn Train, CJ!

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If I recall correctly, the problem with that mission was that if you got TOO close to the train, the shooter couldn't hit anything, so the problem was the players did the mission TOO well. heh.

[–] setsubyou@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

One of the easiest ways to do it is not following the train at all, but riding a bit ahead where there’s a building next to the track you can get on top of, wait for the train to catch up, jump on it, and then just shoot the three guys normally.

[–] it_depends_man@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

designed to show off explosions.

EXPLOSIONS??

Hit the nail on the head

[–] benjirenji@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 weeks ago

And some of these minigun sections also don't require you to shoot anyone. Many of these onrails sections are just an interactive cutscene with one end: you getting out in one piece

If you don't have to do anything, it's not a video game, it's a movie.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah it’s not a QTE, it’s a cutscene

[–] KRAW@linux.community 31 points 2 weeks ago (8 children)

I find it kind of funny that Spider-Man is held up as some sort of golden standard to adhere to in all of this. Spider-Man is also very average game imo. The gameplay is not very compelling, and it's no surprise that Insomniac's approach would overstay its welcome after a couple of games. Doubly so when you move from Spider-Man, a character with a more diverse moveset and inherent better traversal abilities, to Wolverine.

[–] terranoid@lemmy.cafe 34 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

They literally just got web slinging right and the childhood dream of a game where you fly through building and stop random crimes as Spiderman worked as it did in your imagination.

that was a big feat but yeah, those games were over hyped when they were basically just really fun to move around in

[–] hakase@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Spider-Man 2 already did this decades ago, and there was actually a learning curve to that game's traversal, making it way more satisfying when you got good at it.

[–] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It was 14 years between those games. It's a good mechanic that deserved to be dusted off. There were a bunch of other Spiderman games between them that didn't do it. The Insomniac Spiderman had better everything else too, people really forget what that old Spider-Man 2 game was like outside of the swinging mechanics.

[PIZZA MISSION MUSIC INTENSIFIES]

[–] KRAW@linux.community 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, I will not pretend that I did not have fun with it. However, by the end of it I had not desire for more of it. As a result, I haven't played any of the sequels.

Because Spider-Man was a very popular, well-recived game both critically and commercially, from the same studio.

They had a standard of expectation and didn't meet it.

[–] Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Spider-Man (PS4) was just a worse Arkham with web slinging. And it sounds like Wolverine is just a worse Spider-Man without web slinging.

I dunno who's in that game, but it's not logan.

look, the dude doesn't even have armpit hair. a hirsute, near feral character like logan, who's got hair spewing from his face and arms and everywhere, somehow, doesn't have armpit hair. like that's the part he'd shave.

I dunno who that game is supposed to be representing but I hope at the last scene you fight a boss and it turns out haha not logan the whole time, it was mistique.

The game doesn't seem to be getting very many good reviews.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 53 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

"Offensively mid", the result of corporate rot of MBAs who don't play or understand games tgladmaxxing every game into samey mediocrity.

It's a widespread cultural phenomenon. We've promoted finance people into postions of power instead of product people and the results are as obvious as they were predictable.

A game for everyone is a game for noone.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

I miss the days when people like Reggie Fils-Aime, Satoru Iwata (RIP), Gunpei Yokoi, and hell, even early Phil Spencer were in charge of the gaming conpanies they led. It only makes sense that a certified gamer or game developer should be put in charge of a GAMING company.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Capitalism. The people making decisions aren't the people doing the work. The people keeping the profits (and thus the power) aren't the people doing the work.

I'm confident that a lot of the stuff that's unpopular in games was put there because some ghoul thought it would be profitable, and the actual workers didn't want to do it.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I find "capitalism" an incomplete solution to this problem. Hollywood and the gaming industry used to understand how hits worked: most stuff would just about break even, some things would flop, and some small fraction of things would hit it absolutely out of the park. Understanding that, they put people in charge who understand media and understood how people reacted to media.

But then something changed.

People started being put in charge who understood business and finance, but not the media they ran, they didn't understand how people related to the media, and they didn't understand the diversified ecosystem necessary for making an occassional hit. Instead, they think everything has to be a big hit, everything has to be a guaranteed return on investment. How do you guarantee a hit? Pack it with everything everyone loves, get rid of anything some people don't like, and spend a TON of money on it.

The media landscape, be it games, movies, or TV, is absolutely littered with very expensive products that take no risks and, because they take no risks, have nothing unique to offer; meanwhile, mid-budgets products have disappeared, leaving only indie keeping the arts alive in competition with shovelware and reality shows.

I am invoking something other than capitalism, some undiscovered financial-anthropological principle, because this entire corporate media edifice is coming crashing down, something that as antithetical to captialism--they are losing money, they KEEP losing money, yet they KEEP DOING THE SAME THING.

Watched the clip and… is this some arcade game from 2003?

[–] morto@piefed.social 12 points 2 weeks ago

Why do you insult arcade games from 2003 like that?

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Just had a video from a random YT gamer pop up in my feed where he tried out the motorcycle chase on second highest difficulty.

He exited the pause menu, put the controller down and he didn't have to touch it until after the cut scene where Wolverine jumps off the bike onto the truck.

Bro died but he was far enough that he had passed a checkpoint so it just picked back up halfway through the chase.

I have it wishlisted but I won't buy it until it's $10

[–] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Counter offer, take it off your wishlist and go buy $10 worth of silly things at a dollar store. It will literally be a better experience overall and you can enjoy it knowing they didn't enen get a pittance from you.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 27 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Counter counter offer, use that $10 towards a really cool indie game. You'll support a small and upcoming game developer while having an awesome experience that isn't marred by triple-A slop.

[–] tgcoldrockn@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Counter counter counter: cash me outside how bout dat?

[–] biofaust@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Second this. Bought Indika Deluxe edition including Artbook and FLAC soundtrack DRM-free for less than that this week.

This is what i dont get.

Your time is worth more than playing a bad game will give you.

I wouldnt pirate this game, because its hardly a game, and playing it for free is a waste of my time and thus money. Id rather play a mid game than waste my free time on a nongame

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 2 points 2 weeks ago

I dont get it either man

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

Excellent point.

I stopped playing Death Stranding because it was nothing but one long cut scene at the start and I still had no idea what the game was about after it stopped. I have rage quite a number of 'on rails' games. I can find other things to do rather then watch a poorly made interactive movie.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hideo Kojima games may be interactive movies and not to your taste but "poorly made" they aren't.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Is it a game if you're not gaming ?

[–] SpacetimeMachine@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Claiming there isn't a game to death stranding is just wrong though. It's hyperbolic to say the whole thing is a cutscene.

It's actually the best walking simulator ever made, as the focus is on, you know, walking places.

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

It also has a very simple, but also very satisfying gameplay loop. It actually turns boring once it introduces traditional action game mechanics.

[–] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

Red dead redemption 2, lol.

From my experience quicktime events mainly work in kids games. Its a really gimmicky mechanic but if you dont want to make a complex battle too hard for example or have a cutscene it works if youre audience isnt used to playing videogames.

That sounds like what Force Unleashed did years ago which made it unplayable for me.

[–] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ugh I remember that game. Cool game concept, terrible implementation.

[–] CluelessCalls@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

QTEs might be cool on occasion but they really disrupted the flow of that game. It wasn’t really my style anyway but I probably would’ve completed the game if it had more interesting boss fights.
