So glad you asked! We have a small group that meets Friday nights under the Brooklyn Bridge. The password is Sic Semper Tyrannis.
I browse by All and just subscribe to anything that looks interesting. After a while, you should have some interesting/popular communities in your feed.
Honestly, there are so few posts here compared to Reddit, I'm still browsing by All, even after 3 years. Every time I think I have enough interesting community subscriptions, some new community pops up in All that I want to follow.
Keep in mind that "all" only contains communities that at least one other person on your server is subscribed to. That's fine on a big server like lemmy.world, but on a smaller server you'll miss out on a lot of communities if you just rely on the "all" view.
Also, make sure to switch between Hot, Active, Scaled and Top 6 Hour so things don't get stale. It's not as addicting as reddit, so there is going to be some adjustment.
I keep it on Hot. When I run out of things to browse, it's time to put my phone down and go do something productive.
With Reddit, even with a curated subscription list, I never ran out of things to browse. I could accidentally spend all day on Reddit.
With Lemmy, I have a stopping point. Eventually, I either lose interest in my feed, or I catch up to yesterday's posts. Either way, it helps me to switch gears and get offline for a bit.
I keep it on Hot
I'd recommend trying "scaled" if you haven't already. It's like "hot" except smaller / less active communities get boosted. I like it because smaller communities get drowned out by the larger ones otherwise.
What are you interested in? Look for communities that relate to your interests.
Keep in mind that Lemmy is decentralized - there's multiple servers, not just one. You can subscribe to communities even if they're on other servers though. There's some browser sites that let you browse communities across multiple servers.

You can check if communities similar to what you liked on Reddit have any subscribers, which many will not.

Another tip is to add a zero to the end of the score to make it correlate to a similar Reddit score. So, fifty upvotes on Lemmy is about the same as 500 upvotes on Reddit.
