Rules

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

U.S. President Donald Trump says he is working on a β€œmassive deal” to purchase potash from Belarus.

β€œThe pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers,” he posted to Truth Social on Monday.

Canada is the leading exporter of potash, shipping about 22.9 million tonnes in 2024, accounting for over 39 per cent of global exports according to the Government of Canada.

The leading destination of Canadian exports of potash is the United States. The U.S. imports nearly 85 per cent of its potash from Canada.

Belarus ranks third in potash production behind Russia and Canada.

Every time I see the word "potash" as a non-native English speaker, it trips me up immediately thinking its some slang for potato but pronounced like moustache.

Gimme some potash for ma stew!

Creates a potash supply line dependant on belarus

Belarus is a russian puppet

Russia uses Belarussian potash for leverage against the US

"How could i not see this coming???"

Just following orders

Belarus is a Russian ally. Current President Lukashenko, "Europe's last dictator", was "elected" in 1994.

Belarus is a russian ally and therefore the USA is a…?

[–] Delilah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 18 hours ago

Not an ally

The USA is 30% Russia's bitch and 70% Israel's bitch.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 12 points 21 hours ago

Lapdog. I think you wanted "lapdog".

Special butt friend.

So suddenly, trade is not a zero sum game when it involves dealing with dictators. There's so many red flags right with US Russian involvement now that if I were Zelensky, I would not be attending the US for any peace talks. This is a lifeline for Russia and proxies.

Belarus has no potash.

Good job, prez kiddie diddler. A stunning example of a quality trade deal. 😏

A concept of a plan. A deal almost done. Just about to close.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 7 points 22 hours ago

Any day now it could happen. They are ready to make a deal. It’s gonna be the best deal. I don’t care if they make a deal. We could have a deal tomorrow.

As of right now, supply is not included either since Belarus already has contract commitments for its entire supply. Maybe next year? Or 5 years from now? Or?

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 21 points 22 hours ago

Does he know the shipping cost difference?

It's fine he will just tarrif the potash to recoup the cost lmao

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 16 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Just like that time he said he had a peace deal for both Gaza and a nuclear deal with Iran...

[–] book@lemmy.zip 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

The nuclear deal is that he nukes Iran. The peace deal was misunderstood as well, Gaza will be torn to pieces.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Voters though the alternative was worse. And never forget the fucking sitouts.

[–] djmikeale@feddit.dk 8 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Huh, I always thought Kazakhstan was number one exporter of potassium.

Bravo! Great way to introduce vulnerabilities into a critical supply chain. /s
