With congressional approval, right?

...right?

[–] Insekticus@aussie.zone 1 points 39 minutes ago

Dump and his ratfuck administration couldn't win a war against a real army, so like the cowards they are, they have to punch down onto smaller countries to assert dominance. Pathetic...

Actions is an odd way of spelling war crimes.

This is sickening.

U.S. Military Prepares for Possible Action in Cuba New documents reveal that U.S Southern Command is investigating how soon the military action can take place. The Trump administration is preparing for possible military action in Cuba.

Documents reviewed by CBS News reveal that U.S. Southern Command is exploring the availability of combat sustainment, engineering, and medical units—as well as a military police brigade—within the next “90-120 days.”

The administration and USSOUTHCOM have remained vague about their intentions for these units.

“Due to operational security concerns, we do not disclose details or comment on U.S. operational movements or potential deployment timelines associated with current or future operations, contingencies, or planning,” a spokesperson for USSOUTHCOM told CBS. “However, U.S. Southern Command continuously coordinates with the Joint Force to assess a range of potential requirements across its [area of responsibility] in support of assigned missions.”

This comes just days after Trump’s incendiary United Nations General Assembly speech in which he called for the downfall of the Cuban government, claiming that “freedom will be coming to Cuba” while the Cuban delegation walked out.

This recent development also aligns with Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s aggressive, paternalistic approach to the island, slowly choking it to death—blocking key resources and enacting harsh sanctions—while claiming that the government is a “state sponsor of terrorism that spies on America.”

“What we’re trying to teach them is there are no escape valves.... Every time they create a new mechanism in which they try to get out of the noose, we just close it off,” Rubio said last month. “They certainly can’t wait us out. Certainly this isn’t going to go away for the next [two and a half] years.”

Cubans have suffered immensely since President Trump’s return to power. The administration has carried out a blackout-inducing oil blockade since January that has directly contributed to widespread food insecurity, economic collapse, and death, as infant mortality doubled on the island. The U.S. has attacked Cuba on multiple fronts, from accusing its doctor export program of human trafficking to claiming that it’s aiding international terrorism. Now, with this recent USSOUTHCOM report, military intervention seems imminent

That would be the 3rd unprovoked attack on a country by the president of peace. Is the US just trying to start wars with weakened countries until they finally win one? Pathetic.

Way more than three.

Venezuela: In January 2026, U.S. forces bombed Caracas and captured President Nicolás Maduro after months of a naval buildup, oil tanker blockades, and anti-drug strikes in the Caribbean.

Iran: The U.S. carried out joint strikes with Israel (including Operation Midnight Hammer) targeting key nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Yemen: The U.S. military expanded its air and naval campaign against Houthi forces in Yemen and the Red Sea to protect commercial shipping lanes.

Somalia: U.S. warplanes launched counterterrorism strikes against Islamic State (IS) operatives hiding in the Golis mountains.

Iraq and Syria: The military conducted airstrikes to hit ISIS positions and defend U.S. service members from hostile fire.

Nigeria: U.S. forces executed targeted air strikes against local Islamic State militant groups

Not the behavior one would expect of a FIFA Peace Prize winner.

[–] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 52 points 5 hours ago

No, Trump is trying to distract from his failures as a human being. He thought Iran would be easy - it wasn't. So he's going after someone he thinks is weaker to keep the distractions going & expecting the usual wartime support from "patriotic Americans." He's worn them out already & ain't likely to get much, IMHO.

I so want out of this shithole.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 24 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Like most autocrats, he's just trying to get his country bogged down in as many emergency-powers humanitarian nightmares as possible to avoid going to jail.

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 13 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Lol, he's not capable of winning anything. That's why he cheated in every election

[–] Gnugit@aussie.zone 8 points 4 hours ago

He won the spot as World's Biggest Fuckwit so there's that..

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 11 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

No, he just wants people to stop talking about the Epstein Files. He'll torch the world to achieve that goal.

[–] Tanoh@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago

The Trump Files featuring Jefrey Epstein

[–] raglan@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Can't do election shenanigans "because war" if no war.

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 hours ago

Iran will not let them out until after the midterms, there's your war (undeclared like everything since WW2).

[–] Ilixtze@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 hours ago

We don't hate Americans enough.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 16 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I thought Canada was next.

[–] rslogix89@lemmy.world 7 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Nah, they’ll be 51st, haven’t you been listening. /s

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

I see the /s, but still nope. As if America would ever make Canada a state. Canada would end up like Puerto Rico or the CNMI, at best (non-voting territory). America wants Canada's resources...not it's people.

I don’t know much about Cuba. Anyone have a guess on how they would do in an engagement similar to Iran? I don’t recall seeing news about them building missiles or drones, they don’t seem to have allies that could help, and I have no idea if the local population is going to be looking to resist. Even if the population wants to resist, what are the odds they can? Sure guerrilla warfare will be likeliest outcome but would that allow them to hold a majority of the island?

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

It would be Venezuela 2.0

Putin is playing America like a balalaika.

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I guess that is part of my question. Maduro was captured and the Venezuelan people (more or less) didn’t seem to really care. Is the Cuban leadership popular enough for the people to care or would they more indifferent like the Venezuelan response?

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Anything beyond the "it will be over quick" part would be pure conjecture on my behalf. If you mean more long term then if history is anything to go by it will be a brutal guerilla war that USA loses in 20 years.

No but really, Cuba wouldn't stand a chance and would just be ruled as a puppet state, kind of like the Soviet Union did with Ukraine, and Russia is trying to to with Ukraine. Canada, Greenland, Mexico, Cuba, it's just classic imperialist expansionism from the 1800's with some mercantilism thrown in for good (imperial) measure.

But it's definitely an interesting question in a banal, macabre way.

[–] stumu415@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Cuba already suffered decades of embargoes and restrictions by the US. Because nothing says beacon of freedom, by destroying a country economically because their belief system and socialism (uhh such a dirty word), doesn't match your view of the world.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

The USA always saw Cuba as a stray dog in their back yard. Which is funny when you consider what the settlers did to them when they landed there for the first time, and if by funny you mean something else.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 12 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Iran is a natural Fortress. Basically they can dig in and hold out forever. Cuba's a country with very beautiful beaches. There's no way they can resist and even if they could they've been starved for months now and probably don't have the capacity to anymore.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

They already lost in Afghanistan. The fuck they think they gonna do with Iran? A much better, much better trained, equipped, and loyal army, in as you say, a literal natural fortress. They're going after the Persian empire? Bro, better men have tried.

Hmm. Maybe if USA employed companion cavalry...

[–] normanwall@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago

Also distance from the USA and the added supply chain delays/costs, an army doesn't exist long without supplies

[–] dgdft@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Spain invented the modern concentration camp trying to hold the island by force in the late 1800s.

I think the Trump admin would probably try to do the same decapitation without boots-on-ground playbook they’ve done in Iran + Venezuela, but it wouldn’t be pretty if they tried landing troops.

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

1800s are pretty different from today.
Cuba never had a self sufficient military. Most of their heavy equipment came from the soviets and hasn't been refreshed.

The island is within helicopter range of multiple US airbases. There's a well positioned military base already in place on the island.

Holding a jungle with unwilling people fighting you is never going to be easy, but there's a lot of differences between what Spain was against and what the US would be against.

The biggest issue would be that Cuba could plausibly actually land an attack on the US. It would be basically a coin toss on if that made people furious at Cuba or the administration.

[–] dgdft@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Absolutely agreed, I don’t mean to comment beyond the fact it would be hard to hold ground permanently because 1) economic strife aside, people don’t like getting their national sovereignty trampled on and 2) people can hang out indefinitely in the jungle with guns to attack if you try fullblown occupation.

[–] EvergreenGuru@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Cuba should’ve never surrendered the nukes the USSR lent them without a security guarantee and a set of strategic alliances.

The evil empire of the United States is trying to take as many socialist states down with their failing empire as possible. If Trump steals the midterms, he’ll attempt to get Congress to grant him a 3rd term to continue these neo-colonial wars, though his old age means that he will likely die in office.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

Not even gonna blame them for the Maine this time.

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Wake me up once they've given up there and punch down enough to go to war with the Crips.

[–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I think the Crips would fuck them up too, honestly. The only times they actually seem to have any sort of success is when they go after vulnerable populations like trans people and children of immigrants and pregnant women. Real big tough guys they are. Very scary and intimidating. Watch how much they puff out their chests about it too.

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 hours ago

I'd have to agree. cowards wouldn't do it just because there's no large body of water separating them from consequences.
