Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

I was going to laugh at ‘pizza box’ being in English, but apparently the Dutch for ‘pizza box’ is ‘pizza box.’

[–] Ftumch@lemmy.today 45 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Actually it's "pizzadoos".

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Automated translation deceives me once again!

[–] VonReposti@feddit.dk 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The explanation for why it's in English is likely that it would be foreigners eating pizza in the park. Amsterdammers would probably just take it home to eat.

[–] kindenough@kbin.earth 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Amsterdammers will have pizza delivered bij thuisbezord.nl. This is definately for tourists in places like Vondelpark.

[–] VonReposti@feddit.dk 6 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, Vondelpark is also the only place I saw them (and the picture looks like it too), but I am just a tourist too (albeit a frequent one).

Blue streak

[–] oce@jlai.lu 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This is for the well-behaved, for the others, it's "pizzadonts".

[–] Ftumch@lemmy.today 3 points 3 weeks ago

Good one, but it's actually pronounced like "pizza dose". This is of course because they contain a single dose of pizza.

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

Funny, here in Germany, it's FLACHKUCHENSCHACHTEL.

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 35 points 3 weeks ago

Dutch civil engineering is so legit lol.

The big slot is obviously for novelty sized currency coins.

Nah I use those as weights

[–] RogueBanana@piefed.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago

The one in the middle? That's a very fat coin.

Also you cannot recycle pizza boxes. This was one of the reasons why China started refusing cardboard from the US for recycling. The grease screws up the recycling process and basically the batch is ruined.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's a pretty old rule. Last decade or so most recycling programs support and encourage pizza box recycling. Check with your local center.

[–] MajorasTerribleFate@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

"No food contact" in my area. Clean cardboard only.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

do you.. not recycle any food packaging??

[–] MajorasTerribleFate@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

I recycle any food packaging my local recycling facility permits.

Usually my pizza comes on wax paper or the like, and the box is either grease free or close enough (like a tiny spot or two).

Or it's frozen/refrigerated, and wrapped on plastic, so, again, the box goes in recycle.

I don't put soiled things in recycle, but you can't tell, cause it rains often and everything ends up looking fucked.

[–] MajorasTerribleFate@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago

In my locale, take-out pizza is usually provided directly on the interior surface of the pizza box, and so any grease spilling between slices or over the sides (garlic butter sauce on the crust dripping over the edge of the crust, for example) lands directly on the box.

[–] tonywu@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

And they literally put it in the box, telling me to recycle it.

Pizza boxes are technically recyclable, it’s just that they have to be recycled differently to other recyclable products due to the food particulates left behind on the boxes, and also other recyclable products cannot be contaminated by the same food particulates, hence why they likely have a separate section for pizza boxes.

[–] Janx@piefed.social 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I find this hard to believe, but I've also done zero research. I have, however, dropped off many old pizza boxes at various places, and they always accept them for recycling. Maybe it's just more expensive and labor-intensive, but I doubt it's impossible...

That rule varies by location. Some facilities can handle pizza boxes, but not all of them can. It’s best to call your local facility to make sure.

[–] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Where I live we’re now supposed to put pizza boxes in the yard waste/civic compost bin

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

Maybe the special slot allows them easy separation and then they burn it.

As a Norwegian, that's what I read, "alltid inn bak".

[–] kungen@feddit.nu 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's a good false-friend. Bak apparently means "bin" in Dutch.

[–] espentan@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

To a norwegian, dutch is a bit like trying to interpret a very, very drunk person. You think you get the gist of what they're saying but you're just not entirely sure.

[–] kungen@feddit.nu 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yep, my Swedish brain would walk around that container looking for the special hole for garbage, and then realizing all those holes go to the same place.

How is the most American thing I've ever seen actually Dutch?

[–] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Need these in [insert region whose local pizza you hate].

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Who wants to bet someone took a big pizza box, folded it in half, and tried to fit it in the main chute, but it got stuck?

Then they added in the pizza slot for the pizza sluts.

[–] frosty@pawb.social 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

TIL - There's actually a pizza joint in Florida US called Pizza Slut XD https://www.pizzaslut.biz/

Can't people just... Smush the boxes in? Lol

[–] rustinmyeye@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago
[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

are pizza boxes made out of unfoldable materials over there?

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It could be to separe the greasy box with clean cardboard/paper

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

But it looks like it all goes into the same place.
