3. No excessive self-promotion

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts
This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you're submitting before posting to see if it's already been posted.
We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.
5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW
Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.
No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.
6. No linking to piracy
Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.
We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1) - the first game that I played into the hundreds of hours.
Tales of Destiny (PS1) - the first game that I played late into the night and had to stop playing because it was becoming a problem.
World of Warcraft - I played it from 2004 through 2025, but mmorpgs in general are fantastic and a wonderful creation. Currently, I am playing LotRO.
Final Fantasy Tactics (GBA) - I played this game every night for three years when I worked night shift ems. Hell, just mentioning it makes me want to spin up a fresh save file.
Final Fantasy (NES) - this game got me into party-based, turn-based role-playing games and that turned into a lifelong love of Dungeons and Dragons.
Thanks for causing me to pause and reflect.

Tetris - The "Citizen Kane of games" that everyone has been waiting for came out before we were taking games seriously. The recorded narrative that makes you feel is literally you getting apprehension, anger, grief, elation, and pure flow state oneness while you yourself play the game, and sort blocks into lines. This game is a slap in the face of anyone that thinks we need the trappings of film to be art.
Portal - Just such a novel game and mechanic, a clever and fun tone, everything fit together properly. Some days I'd change this out for Quake as the mirror of this.
Shadow of the Colossus - What a fucking game.
Dwarf Fortress -My "everything" game. I just want it to keep growing.
And I don't know about the fifth. I'll have to get back to you. Maybe Quake, maybe a GTA, maybe Minecraft. I just don't know.
/edit: Final Fantasy 6 - I'm not saying narrative is bad in my earlier explanation. I'm just saying it's not inherently the medium's strength. But this is great. And the community's mods ("romhacks") are just chef's kiss.

I couldn't do 5, so I did 7. The top 3 are solid, I think, in terms of games I thought about a lot while I wasn't playing them and couldn't wait to get back to. They constitute the best time I've had in games.
Then the next three were formative experiences, I think, but I haven't played them since they came out. They probably don't hold up, but that's okay because they were landmarks in the past.
And then Overcooked is exactly the kind of structured chaos I love in a multiplayer experience. I would never play it solo, but I have a lot of great memories playing it with friends. It was fun with my chaos friends that are just trying to make it through the level as best they can while things are on fire, but it also had enough meat that my process friends and I could optimize and figure out runs to "crack" the levels and get maximum orders through. Delightful.

There are a lot of games I played a lot of times but maybe because I had no others and had a ton of time. Nowadays I would only replay Yoshis Island and Shadow of the colossus. I dont know if would replay SH but I played it a ton when young and it cemented my love for survival horror games. I only went through Majoras Mask once or twice, I was more of a Playstation kid than a Nintendo one. I recently played Outer Wilds and it was an awesome unexpected experience.
