Kiss From a Rose by Seal. I couldn’t even tell you what the plot of Batman Forever was.

Ace Ventura teams up with the cop from The Fugitive, so Iceman has to team up with that guy from NCIS:LA to defeat them
Joel Schumacher of all people. To follow Tim Burton. That's like hiring Dean Koontz to finish George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones), or to pick up an unfinished Neil Gaiman series.
Hey at least Dean Koontz would have finished the fucking thing.
Smash Mouth - All Star. It’s so popular from Shrek that most people forget (or never knew) that it started in Mystery Men.
It’s so popular from Shrek [...]
[...] it started in Mystery Men.
I was 15 years old in 1999 when Smash Mouth dropped their second album, "Astro Lounge." All Star was the hit song released on that album and it was all over the radio for the next couple years.
It was an extremely popular single at the time. Everyone in my school would drop everything to sing along if it came on the radio. Most of my friends (myself included) owned the album on CD. And to think the song was written as an afterthought, when they were finished with the album but needed more songs to fill it out a bit.
And yes, Mystery Men (1999) was the first film to prominently feature the song. But that film was technically a flop at the time of release, so most people didn't even see it. Which is why no one knows that All Star was in that movie.
Right as the song's popularity was finally starting to die down, Shrek (2001) released and brought All Star back to life. And it's become the anthem for Shrek movies ever since.
It was an incredibly popular song on its own back in the day. Shrek just ensured it lasted for several generations instead of dying out in the early 2000s.
My kids saw Shrek! not too long ago and got into that song. So I put the video from YouTube up for them and did a double take because I had completely forgotten that the video itself is a tie-in to Mystery Men (which is severely underrated imo)
I love Mystery Men. It was just the perfect mix of camp and heart. It's criminally underrated. I kinda get it — it's hammy and ridiculous, but there was just an earnestness to it. It was full of tropes, but never boring or formulaic. Familiar, while being totally unexpected. It felt like watching people play a tabletop superhero RPG.
Flash by Queen
From the movie Flash Gordon
Im going to assume you are just being comparative, and saying that the song is just so good that no movie could be better.
Because otherwise you would be insinuating that flash Gordon is a bad movie. And we dont tolerate that kind of heresy
Yeah, if only because Flash—Ahhhaaahhaaa—is the savior of the universe. You know, that Flash—Ahhhaaahhaaa—he'll save every one of us.
Flashdance had two songs ("what a feeling" and "maniac") that everyone knows even if they haven't seen the movie.
I'm surprised no one said Dolly Parton's 9-to-5.
I watched that for the first time earlier this month. I was NOT expecting what it actually was.
I thought it was just at most like a concept album film, but way more likely to just have her as the soundtrack to a bad movie with a silly and relatable "fuck up your boss" theme.
Now I know she was respected for her vocalized beliefs and inclusion, but I really didn't think it would go that hard. I was blown away.
Plus I was pretty high when I watched it, and some of those scenes were trippy af. It was a good day.
The graduate soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel. Mrs. Robinson was a work in progress and adapted to fit the movie, and sound of silence, and Scarborough fair are classics of the period and folk rock pillars of the century.
Interestingly, this was one of if not really the first time popular, contemporary artists had their music featured in a film. Prior, scoring a film was the purview of someone with a music phd. Talk about the beginning of sea change for the industry.
Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio (feat. L.V.)
It was originally written for a movie called Dangerous Minds. I'm not an expert on Hip Hop, but I'd say it has definitely made it's place among the best in the genre.
Also, it's heavily by Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise.
This post is 4h old and no-one’s got it rightest yet…
White Christmas.
Of course it is.
Few remember that it won the Oscar for 1942. Fewer still remember the film was called Holiday Inn
Axel F - Harold Faltmeyer ("Beverly Hills Cop" title)
The movies were super popular, but the title music became chart topping, and basically turned into the archetypical sound of the 80's
And then got frogged.
Crazy
I Will Always Love You from The Bodyguard. I’ve never even seen it.
Also, Wicked Game was way bigger than Wild At Heart.
Id say Lose Yourself by Eminem. Maybe because I was too young to watch the movie when it came out, but that song was everywhere, and is still popular today
Chariots of fire theme by Vangelis from a movie "Chariots of fire".
Aerosmith - don't want to miss a thing
I bet most people don't even know it was the lead track written for a movie when it came out.
Armageddon was a pretty popular movie tho. 🤨
It was extremely popular, it had several big stars and was the second highest grossing movie of 1998 after Titanic.
St. Elmos Fire. It's a one hit wonder, but the movie it was written for was typical 1980s "friends with issues" pablum. The kind that was better written and acted in a dozen other movies.
As good as the 1995 movie was, and it was good, the Techno Syndrome Mortal Kombat song was a certified banger.
Honorable mention to Blood Rave from the Blade Soundtrack
"Raindrops keep falling on my head" - Hal David & Burt Bacharach (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid)
"Young Guns" - Bon Jovi (Young Guns 2)
"Wind beneath my Wings" - Bette Midler (Beaches)
"Cry Little Sister" - Gerard McMahon (Lost Boys)
Just a few I can think of off the top of my head.
I discovered fairly recently that Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) was originally recorded as the soundtrack to a movie called Against All Odds.
Until then, I had no idea that movie existed.
Honestly I do think Eye of the Tiger… if not, Chariots of Fire?
But maybe that’s just time
I've yet to meet anyone who's heard Scotty Doesn't Know by Lustra, who has also seen Eurotrip.
Who wants to live forever from Highlander.
On that note, Flash from Flash Gordon
Dueling Banjos in Deliverance
Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger from the trailers for the movie Disturbing Behavior.
Also obligatory shout out about how they are a criminally underrated band and their albums are fucking great if you like clever, sarcastic indie rock.
