I was thinking he was missing a very clever dad joke he could make.

Fan fics.

Oh wait you said 5, not 15. Ummm.......really gross stories with lots of kissing and cooties.

2 officers one vessel

2 detectives one tophat

brokeback anomaly

edit: sherlock holmes and the case of the missing vaseline

Some slash fics are still epic stories in their own right! Good luck finding a good one that gets finished, though.

[–] TomMasz@piefed.social 9 points 21 hours ago

I had never heard of slash until I ran across mentions of it in USENET back in the day. Not my thing, but it certainly tells you how deeply committed the Star Trek fanbase can be.

I appreciate that dad knew what was up. It was older code, but slash is eternal.

They're talking about fanfiction, which in most fandoms predominantly include gay shipping

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Maybe I just don't get it, but I just don't see there being anything vaguely inspiring of that sort of chemistry between the caracters of that specific show. Other duos in other shows, ok, but Sherlock just seemed so far from that dynamic.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 64 points 1 day ago (4 children)

To be fair, fanfic doesn't have to be about alternate relationships. It can be just fixing the studio/corporate butchering of a working lore, or going in directions that are legit but aren't interesting enough for movie/TV writers. And some of the fanfic crowds are VERY particular about consistency.

Fanfic for Star Wars prequels is pretty incredible. What could have been. And sure, that includes relationships.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I'll be honest, i got issues with that world "alternate" there.

Why not just say same sex

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Because some of the relationships changed around or created are between two different sexes? Sure, a lot of it is gay, but some can be a different girl that the main guy isn't with. I was trying to be all inclusive.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Yup, but think of your word choice.

Why are they alternate. Alternate to what?

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

so the word you're looking for is non-canon

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

I feel like you could have just rolled with the clarification that the comment referred to all fan-shipping. Alternate is a perfectly reasonable word for "non canon"

Your initial reaction was perfectly understandable, and and relief at the clarification would have been great. Just seems unfortunate to get weird about seeming put out by "alternate" as a way to say "non canon".

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago

Can't fix ‘Sherlock’, though.

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Star Wars extended universe before the disney retcon is awesome. I actually found a book being discarded by the local library that's about how Leia got the plans and I haven't read it yet but I think she is pretty badass in it.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 13 points 20 hours ago

When I saw Star Wars for the first time, in the theater in 1977, it occurred to me that the adventure of stealing the Deathstar plans must have been pretty spectacular, but then I realized that probably everybody died getting them, and they'll never make that movie, where the heroes die in the end.

Decades later, Rogue One came out, and told the story I wanted to see, and yeah, pretty much everyone dies in the end.

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

What’s the name of the book?

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Blurb

Bloodline. Here's the blurb.

Also, I was completely wrong about the premise.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It doesn't have to be. It never isnt.

[–] DaGreenGobbo@feddit.uk 8 points 1 day ago

My fanfic ain't about none o' dat. Or at least once I wrote it, it won't be. Not dat it is now, either.

It's about dis git wot wants ta get really smart and he comes up with dis proppa klever plan ta get smart. But den, if he's dat klever ta begin with, does he really need to get smart?

It's called Grot and Supergrot. I'll write it one day. Den yoo'll see!

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 43 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wanna bet both OOP and her sister are prolific Sherlock slash writers?

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 21 hours ago (2 children)
[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

Reminds me of The Last Jedi.

[–] Maroon@lemmy.world 13 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

My God, this almost feels cathartic when someone expresses your feels so perfectly. I genuinely thought I was mad because everyone around me thought Sherlock was the peak avatar of that franchise. I thought it was cringe and was rank with #iamverysmart vibes throughout the show.

[–] DeadDigger@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 hours ago

Sherlock is a good slapstick show. It's just a shit Sherlock Holmes show. I kinda like it anyway.

[–] Colloidal@programming.dev 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I thought they were talking about Elementary at first, and wasn't understanding where the gay fanfic fit in.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Oh please, Elementary Holmes is queer coded af

[–] Colloidal@programming.dev 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

But who'd be Spock to his Kirk? His brother?

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

Actually fandom mostly goes for jamie / joan

[–] Colloidal@programming.dev 1 points 10 hours ago

Oh, do they? 😳

[–] becausechemistry@piefed.social 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And some of those stories have some pretty challenging ideas involving Greek letters that I’m not sure dad is equipped to handle

[–] Apeman42@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

Joke's on you, dad wrote an Omegaverse Spirk fic when you were still just a twinkle in his balls.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 10 points 1 day ago

[not really off topic, but kinda]

"The 7% Solution" by Nicholas Meyer [who also directed the movie]

Fantastic story. Holmes' cocaine habit has become a full on addiction. It's up to Drs. Watson and Freud to cure him.
