Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1885 readers
726 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

YPTB matrix channel: For real-time discussions about bastards or to appeal mod actions in YPTB itself.

Just don’t use Lemmy.ml

Yeah, power tripping by virtue of inability to allow respectful discussion on the subject of a highly charged subject.

The ban was 1000% out of scale with anything in the comments. For the ban to be for that reason, which isn't really in the community rules in the first place, it crosses from reasonable into arbitrary personal semantic demands.

Since there's no definition or guidelines given on what they consider Zionism or not, that means they're applying whatever their personal opinion is without any intervening steps to resolve the situation. Which, they can do, it's their community, but the lack of transparency as to what that is makes it one of the classic power trippin' moves.

It's also egregious enough that I really think the mod is question may need admin intervention, possibly removal.

I'm not a Zionist but my husband is.

Perhaps they're just overrepresented when it comes to controversies, but a good chunk of the bans on Lemmy seem to be a 'no true Scotsman' approach to users being sufficiently anti-Zionist.

If you watch carefully that extends to different topics too. Having discussions about voting, weapons sales, etc result in bans on some sort of "ism", imperialism, electoralism, whateverism.

Have a discussion about how skewed the actual data is? no way. Zionism if you don't say it's completely made up.

Hilarious that bro thinks he has any leg to stand on with nearly anything when he's the sole moderator of a community with an AI-generated logo.
