mountain bike

unsuitable for commuting

Nah, they're fine for commuting especially with shitty streets. I commute on my Trek 820 all the time! They do have smoother street oriented tires on them though.

Yo combustion engines did in fact replace horses though... This is like just denial. Name a case where someone actually prefers a horse for actual work that isn't just about the novelty of having a horse do it...

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The point is that horses got replaced by trains, trams and bicycles for most people long before cars became widely used.

[–] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Horses were still used for many things still when those existed. They were fully replaced by the ICE

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You are also arguing in bad faith, because cars are not the same as internal combustion engines. You might be able to argue correctly that tractors replaced farm animals for productive use, but tractors are not cars.

[–] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz -1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Tractors are a variety of car. I'm not arguing in bad faith I just think that's nonsense.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And boats are a variety of car if they have an ICE, right? 🤡

[–] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

boats are not a variety of car, but also boats didn't replace horses? tractors are in no way meaningfully different from a car.

both four wheeled vehicles attached to an ICE. Cars.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You are making up arbitrary definitions to suit your silly argument. A boat is a form of personalized transport with an ICE engine, a steering wheel and seats, even a windshield etc. so it is clearly a "car" 🤡

A car, or an automobile, is a motor vehicle with wheels. Most definitions of cars state that they run primarily on roads, seat 1–8 people, have four wheels, and mainly transport people rather than cargo.

you're calling me a clown when you don't even know what a car is?? 🤡

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

By that definition a tractor isn't a car.

You’re calling me a clown when you don’t even know what a car is?? 🤡

[–] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The only thing there that it doesn't fit is "primarily on roads" the weakest part of the definition because there are plenty of off-road cars.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Where do tractors mainly transport people (or cargo)?

A boat is clearly closer to your definition of a car than a tractor.

[–] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

People ride in the tractor, the hitch has cargo but saying a car with a hitch isn't a car is absurd.

You saying a boat is closer because of this nonsense point is insane. Also a truck is a car, but can primarily move cargo.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

A motor vehicle with wheels doesn't describe a tractor? 🤔

[–] lovely_reader@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Have you read the article? It's really not about horses at all, and it makes some good points that help put the horse comment into context.

[–] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yes there are good points but the initial premise that it's a myth is wrong, I did read the article.

[–] lovely_reader@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Perhaps we're getting hung up on the semantics of "replaced." Where once there were horses, there were later internal combustion vehicles of many kinds. But the point the article makes is simply that that "replacement" wasn't as direct as the typical claim, as urban workers were not commuting on horseback. People did not ride into the dealership in a personal carriage, trade in the horses, and drive off the lot in a Model T. At that time, communities were denser and people were walking and using transit. Some of the transit was pulled by horses, later replaced by individual cars as the auto industry systematically attacked transit and reshaped cities, but that's not what the "replaced" claim implies. It has the sound of a 1:1 swap.

Name a case where someone actually prefers a horse for actual work that isn’t just about the novelty of having a horse do it…

All sorts of rough terrain stuff, where hooves work great but wheels don't. For example, hilly terrain on a ranch.

Anywhere where you have plenty of pasture to feed a horse for cheaper than the oil cost of a car/motorbike. Or just needed to be more off-grid than an early automobile would easily provide.

Anytime you want a self-driving vehicle. If you were blackout drunk in the 1900s you could stagger to your horse and your horse could carry you home by itself.

Basically anytime you didn't need the extra horsepower/speed - my mother would talk about a veggie seller when she was growing up, who had a horsecart in the 1950s/60s that went up and down High Street every day kind of like an ice cream van would today. The horse would walk along and stop when someone came out, and then when someone bought some veggies the horse would tend to cheekily start walking right around the end of the purchase instead of waiting for the veggie seller to tell him first. Could he have bought a truck? Maybe, but trucks were expensive so maybe he just couldn't afford it. Either way, why bother? The better specs aren't even useful for the task. Nowadays this would be impossible as it's now illegal to go that slowly down High Street, due to all the cars.
