TLDR: put babies in a crib with a firm sleeping surface, nothing in it, and lying on their backs.

This is the exact advice given to parents for years now. My wife knew about this when we had our child over 10 years ago
the disparity between knowledge like that has very real impacts -- my mother (as well has her mother) were unaware that evaporated milk wasn't nutritionally sufficient for babies until a doctor accidentally discovered she was using it to feed me as a baby and did so to my older siblings as well, so he got her enrolled in parenting classes and now my youngest sibling is the only neurotypical one among us as result. lol
Mhm, same here, but I'm also a middle-class white woman so I'm aware that my access to resources and information is influenced by that.
If only we had a system in place that supported new families and made sure they all had the basic necessities, like a safe place to sleep.
Nah fuck poor people.
Nah fuck poor people.
ironically also said by the poor people themselves.
i'm willing to be that few to none actually want to fuck the poor and that most are just too propagandized to realize that the things they support do indeed fuck the poor.
For them it is more like "fuck the non-white people"
The real scary part is the remaining 27%. Where the parents did everything right with sleeping conditions.
Years ago I saw a study that pointed fingers towards nicotine: if you are a smoker or work in smoky environments - even a high nicotine vapers - they suggest to shower and change before handling babies.
I have no data but I'm assuming any kind of smoke (even weed) and any carcinogen can be hurtful.
Without the baselines, those percentages don't indicate relative risk. I think they all do, rates of SUID dropping and guidelines on sleeping have a clear correlation.
But an casual observer might incorrectly read bedding as being a greater risk factor than back sleeping... Which still might be true, but doesn't necessarily follow from these numbers in isolation.
