You don't have to call me out like that

I feel attacked

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 44 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I sit like the second picture to keep my back from hurting. Remember kids, just because you CAN lift that person that weighs more than you you SHOULDN'T lift that person

Also, consent is good.

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 34 points 1 month ago

Oh I had consent from all involved except my back lol

[–] pipe01@programming.dev 5 points 4 weeks ago

Yeah that's how I fucked up my knee lol

[–] Karjalan@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago

First picture gang checking in. Especially as a 2 metre tall person, I don't fit anywhere, gotta get creative

I once had someone at a party tell me β€œI can tell you’re in IT because of how you sit.” I didn’t think I was sitting weird.

[–] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 41 points 4 weeks ago

Not weird at all hehe

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 17 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

dude I had a random teammate tell me once in a video game that I sounded like I had a stand-up desk

[–] SeventySeven@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 weeks ago

yes, but I wasn't using it at the time. I was gaming at my Ikea kitchen table desk, with my standup work desk right next to me

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah turns out core strength is important, who knew

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's exactly what my physical therapist just told me

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

That’s just Big Glute propaganda.

  1. Sitting weird is good so long as you keep altering your position. It's sitting still in the same position for a long time that is the worst. I can't sit still either way, thanks ADHD :)
  2. Squats and deadlifts, other back exercises and running can compensate for hours of sitting (at least in terms of back issues). The technique has to be right though or it can make things worse.
[–] firelizzard@programming.dev 2 points 3 weeks ago

Running makes my knees angry

[–] drath@lemmy.world 12 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

tbf, almost every single chair out there is wildly un-ergonomic. Whoever came up with all that 90 degree "perfect posture" bullshit must be exhumed, revived and then executed again. Just get yourself a laptop and work from bed if you can, otherwise, get a recliner that can go back at least 45Β°, find your comfortable angle, then plan the rest of the setup around that.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Wat.

This is how you get chronic heart burn

[–] drath@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Heart burn is a digestion tract issue, lying down only exacerbates the symptoms.

Even if that was the case, just lying like 10-20 degree off completely flat completely negates the issue.

I sit like this and have no back pain, but I also exercise regularly

[–] 14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 weeks ago

come back in 10 years and tell us how it goes.

[–] HalfSalesman@lemmy.world 9 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

My back has rarely hurt through my life. Only recently after working as a kitchen aid in my second job have I started feeling any at all.

Now my knees are a different story. I've had bad knees since I was 12.

[–] Glitch@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I worked in a kitchen with a subtly sloped floor, so water goes towards the drains. I'm convinced that messed me up

Physically and possibly also mentally.

I'm basing this on nearly nothing, but I honestly think hanging around on slopes for too long without skiing, snowboarding, or cycling messes with your mind..

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 6 points 4 weeks ago

Standing desks actually need to go right down so you can kneel, sit cross legged or lie at the keyboard.

[–] kubica@fedia.io 5 points 1 month ago (3 children)

If you usually wear belts and you have back pain maybe you could start from that. Better the annoyance of your pants not staying in place than the back pain.

Please elaborate

[–] Sabata11792@ani.social 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Bold of you to assume I have pants on when writing code.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 4 weeks ago

Yeah, skirts are way better :3

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Instructions unclear, am pantsless and my back still hurts.

[–] kubica@fedia.io 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's certainly worse. But to be more clear what I meant is that tight belts are more of a problem than they might seem.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Do tight belts cause back pain? I’ve never heard that. Also I’ve had some back issues over the years, and no doctor or therapist has ever told me that.

Mainly they tell me to exercise, and give you special exercises to do. Those help.

[–] kubica@fedia.io 3 points 4 weeks ago

I was just talking from experience at first. But for example searching I find various articles similar to this one

Increased abdominal pressure can lead to stiffness in the spine and added stress on the back. Tight belts can exacerbate this pressure, resulting in nerve compression, particularly affecting the femoral cutaneous nerve. This compression can cause not only back pain but also abdominal pain and discomfort, affecting digestive health. Evidence suggests that consistently wearing a tight belt can significantly heighten the risk of chronic back pain by disrupting spinal stability and altering abdominal muscle function. Visible signs, such as red marks on the skin after removing a belt, may indicate its tightness and potential for harm. https://wisehealthtips.com/can-lower-back-discomfort-be-caused-by-belts.html

Or this

Lower back and spinal pain Research has linked increased pressure in the abdomen with stiffness in the spine and extra stress on your back. So that extra ergonomic help you had from the office chair isn’t doing much if your belt still sits extra tight on your waist. The back pain is a terrible result of nerve compression which takes place when pressure is applied. https://www.askdrmanny.com/could-your-belt-lead-to-back-pain

I was as per the right most panel when reading this.

[–] MithranArkanere@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago

I take offense at that. My chair doesn't look that comfortable. It also sounds like a NazgΓ»l when I sit on it.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 weeks ago

My back hurt at 16

I sit like this and have no pain... I also climb 3 times a week, which, accoiding to my informal survey, helps inmensly with back pain.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 3 points 4 weeks ago (6 children)

I used to sit weirdly too but it was never a problem. I would guess the main problem for people with pain is lack of any exercise. It seems some people don't even walk anymore, they use those electric boards to move. No surprise their body becomes crap.

The problem is the chair.
