Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

I see Lemmy as an older crowd that prefers ASCII emotes. Although the do work in some situations.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
it's just personal preference 🤷♀️
Depends.
I rather use these: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Check my post history, I guess. 😅
They're helpful in providing the proper context to a text-based convo. IRL, you'd just see my face and body language and hear my tone and understand things better so we have to adjust when texting. This is why people feel like they need the "/s" for sarcasm and whatnot. 👍
My "I'm being kidnapped, send help" secret code is "I start using emoji"
I like that it's not much in use here.
I have to think more carefully about what words I type and how to convey my emotions in text. It's good to practice written communication, and it's good to be comfortable with it for when you want to be taken more seriously.
And I kinda assume those who splatter their text with emojis are bots or LLMs programmed to sound more human, or people trying to imply or invoke emotions to sell me on some nonsense or other, so I don't read those comments or posts anyway.
It's fun that Lemmy has its own culture which comes as a little shock but is easy to adapt to once you figure it out, isn't it?
Emojis remind me of LLM slop
God I hate the emojis used as bullet points trend so much, it looks so tacky and is the biggest immediate sign of a vibecoded slop project

I tend to only use emoji when texting people I know, not when talking to strangers. Also, I'm on desktop here and so its more effort to use them than its worth IMO 😤
If you’re on windows the emoji keyboard is windows key + .
Ctrl + . works for me on Linux Mint -- that's how I enter most of the ones I use.
On Arch using Firefox 🔥️🦊️ that works for me too 🎊️
Look out Fediverse 🤖️, I am now Emoji enabled 😱️
Congratulations 👏, you 👉 are ready ✅ for LinkedIn 🎉💼
🥳️
I probably use the 🙃 emoji most.
Because it does not really have an equivalent in ASCII emoticons.
I've always been of the opinion that one can use their words. I've never read anything with emojis crammed in where I felt they've added anything of substance. It just seems lazy and a bit trashy.
Yes. I'm well aware I'm a curmudgeon. I make no apologies.
I think they're annoying to look at and I have never felt the need to use them to communicate. I think that people who use a lot of emojis are usually stupid.
🤡🫵
I grew up with the emoticons (thats what the text based ones are called? Like :D :P etc?). I never learned to use emojis. I remember when some services and platforms started to bring them on, there was options to turn them off, so I did that. Not sure why, but I did. This was in... 2005? Something like that. Since then I just never bothered to learn to use them. Some services you have to do the :word: thing to get a specific one, some services you need to scroll through millions of them to find the one you are looking for. I can express myself well enough with the text based ones, for me its more work to find a emoji than to just type a couple of characters on the keyboard.
I'm old enough to think of emojis as hieroglyphics for teens.
I use them once in a while. Also, I have two in my username.
I noticed you used one in a comment a month ago. Be the change you want to see. 😁
no rules that I'm aware of.
my personal input, it's a good 'language'. it's all interpretation and if you want to be taken serious in speech, you don't talk in pictures.
it would be akin to only taking in abbreviations. it only makes me ask you what you're talking about , or being completely ignored/assumed ai slop
t(-_-t) emoji can eat a dick
I don't like them and don't want to see them in a discussion forum.
I've been conditioned over time to not use them on internet forums but I use them a lot when texting. So it feels kind of weird to see one around on a Lemmy comment but I don't hate them
For me it's part of non-verbal communication and empathy when used to add context to what you're trying to communicate. But I don't use it online either.. I think it's because some forums don't enable them or it's not practical if you're on a desktop per example. Maybe that's why the Internet is so miserable 😅
Emojis are a trashy signal for me I hate them. I want my text monochrome. Cool unicode symbols get a pass. "⚠" Yes "⚠️" no.
No rules against them! We're just old :p
Emoji are nice though, thanks for bringing it up.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I do post these emojis sometimes:
🌍🧑🚀🔫👨🚀
I use them on discord on sometimes on othef chat platforms. I don't really like them in longer form text like lemmy or reddit.
They also, at least for me, carry context that doesn't make that much sense outside one community. For example I used laughing cat emoji that we use to signify being amused and a guy from a different community thought I was mocking him.
Yeah I use them all the time. Very helpful when conveying tone.
I don't like them.
I like ASCII emojis more. Emojis feel creepy sometimes I like the purple heart
In neck of the woods the emoji 🙏🙏🙏
is practically a professional requirements.
has to be 3 🙏
I like them. I use them infrequently because they're a bit of a hassle to use with the piefed interface, and I haven't bothered to install an emoji picker on my desktop, because I use them so infrequently. But I am a big fan of how they augment written language.
I tend to use them as tone carrying punctuation if I'm making a joke or expressing a particular emotional meaning 🙃 It's rare for me to put an emoji anywhere but at the end of a sentence 🧓 Emotions are hard for me to convey at the best of times, and text-only communication makes it harder 🤷 and emojis can fill in somewhat where tone and cadence would in verbal communication.
It's not a perfect analog and the medium of emojis is still so new that the meanings vary a great deal, to say nothing of how different emoji "fonts" can convey vastly different meanings. For example, the emoji "😕" can express a wide array of emotional states with particular mouth and eye attitudes, the orientation of eyebrows if they're included, etc. A comment that says one thing in one font can express something quite different in another. It's a problem we'll need to sort out, eventually, but I don't think it's anyone's top priority at the moment. Emoticons suffer less from that problem because the glyphs are more standardized: regardless of font, everyone recognizes ":)" as "generic smiling face". Between that and the fact that I can render text emoticons without having to open another dialog or application, the vast majority of my emotes are text-based :)
Personally I am happy to be free of this arbitrary rule of Reddit sheep culture that you can't use emojis. People here have the courtesy to use them as appropriate, and I myself use them occasionally. I hope we all just keep it that way.
I think a few old school text emoji's are fine, when used in moderation.
:D
I think relying on cute lil pictures littered throughout text to convey your message is lazy, distracting and childish.
No but they're fine, and also yes sometimes 🙂
