Publishing pointless libraries for job applications a tale as old as the npm registry. Probably older but all the techbro webscale bullshit started around the time of node.

People dont want a strong standard library anymore. As much as i hate microfart i think dotnet is pretty strong due to the fact i think i only never needed a third party dependency for json and nothing else…. And crystal reports. Oh my one true love, crystal reports.

At least Java mostly coalesced around a single JSON library, even if it took 15 years. Maven (and by extension, Gradle) has been great as long as everything has stayed pretty much centralized. NPM has always been shit (LeftPad.js, anyone?), NuGet started off just as bad, PyPi is loaded with unmaintained garbage from before the Python 3 schism... Ironically, Composer might be the least terrible of the webshit repositories, just because 80% of PHP devs refused to learn how to use it during the webscale hype days.

Don't get me started on Ruby, though... kombucha-disgust

Composer my love. Laravel my love. Doesnt beat copying random dll into IIS to get TLS working tho. Real php hours

One of the things that drew me to Go for personal projects is the massive and well-thought-out standard library.

Yeah F# is a perfect language. The dotnet team must be kept in a totally different city than the rest of Microsoft.

I do. I like python a lot because of the standard library covers a lot of use cases. On the other hand rust is a great language but try to read JSON and the dependencies pulled in and the build artifacts take up 5 gigabytes of space. I hate writing software sometimes.

Urllib3 is doodooass but otherwise yeah python is my fav language atm cos i rarely ever use anything but the std lib. Also i have multithreading turned on in 3.14 and its swag

I only write small programs and scripts so if I have to make web requests I use this instead: https://github.com/slingamn/mureq

It's one file so I just download and import it.

Thats pretty sweat. Tbh all urllib needs is a thin abstraction like this to make it a bit more legible

[–] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 weeks ago

I'm not sure why something like this isn't already packaged in the standard library. It's like a jobs program for requests devs.

I thought I was the only one who worked with Crystal Reports these days 😅

[–] Snort_Owl@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

I havent worked with them in over a decade fortunately. My condolences

astronaut-1

Also, my standing policy after seeing multiple ecosystems is that web devs get the wall.

Yeah web dev is a fucking mess with a quadrillion frameworks

Reject web, return to desktop and gopher.

IDK if you've actually used npm or not because IME usually all the libraries tree-shake-less, no type definitions, and/or haven't been updated in 10 years.
