World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Didn't they get caught?
How the heck do you then unload 30K bottles of stolen wine? I feel like this would be a daunting task.
A couple of people can unload a trailer in 2 or 3 hours. Its not brain science lol.
I meant "find a buyer for." Maybe you were kidding but I'm not sure. :)
I work in a warehouse and completely misunderstood you 🤣
Nice! 😁
Hollywood already writing a script.
No wine is worth 194€ a bottle. Wine is a product not a commodity. It is produced to be consumed as a drink or as an ingredient. This is a joke.
I agree. ten dollars, maybe 20 or 40 tops. Anything above that is snobbery. Italy specializes in selling to snobs though, that is their thing.
My country produces more and better wine and an average wine here costs less than 10€. A very good wine is around 30€. Any more and you get people asking if the entire process, from grape to bottle, was entirely done by hand.
They had to create "collector" wines to inflate prices here.
The best wines involve feet as I understand it, but I am a traditionalist.
Ah, yes, much like an orgasm, indeed.
That is not my thing, but I can get into it. As a guy, any sort of fetish is possible if the girl wants it, except some shit obviously.
That's the traditional way, yes, and some people, in particular people that produce mostly for themselves and in small quantities, still use it. But any winer maker that wants to put product on any wider market beyond family and friends needs scale to process tons of grapes in the shortest time possible. And that requires machinery.
Very true, and the yeast added might be better than foot yeast. It might be.
I live in wine country and people that avoid chemicals to make their wine don't rely on yeasts to ferment. They rely on the wild yeasts the bunches naturally carry and use fermentation time and room temperature to control the process.
And people wash and always washed their feet before stomping the grapes. They did some nasty things but dirty feet wasn't one.
Sure, but washing feet does not mean there is no yeast there. But yes, most of the yeast is from the environment, which is why there was always the emphasis on year and region and all that.
A lot of areas don't have good natural yeasts, like mine, in the great lakes region. You can get lucky, but most likely you will get some weak brew.
We have a licqueur that is essentially a nearly non fermented wine to which is added a very high alcohol content spirit, itself made by distilling the peels and stalks of the grapes after fermentation, to kill off the yeast.
It's a nice drink to have with some roasted chestnuts.
So, it doesn't require a strong ferment to get a nice drink. But I understand your point. Not every place in the world is good for making wine straighforward and it was a good thing we collectively learned how to select and preserve yeast strains.
I make maple syrup wine, I make maple syrup.
It is interesting, no two batches are the same, and it's a remarkably complex flavour. I also make cheap sugar ferments most of the time because I'm not made out of money, that I distill.
I would enjoy very much to try maple syrup one day but it is not an easy product to find here. And the wine seems like an interesting concept.
Ever considered doing fruit based mashes and distill it? It's more involved but the hard licquour is more prone to be drank over a longer period of time than basic fermented drinks.
But I've seen people doing "wine" from nearly any fruit, using water infused with the fuit and a lot of sugar.
I like fruit so much I feel it's a waste to distill it, unless the fruit doesn't taste good. I made like 30 gallons of hard cider last year, (tried to, ten or more are vinegar,) but it's a weak ferment.
Of northern fruits, only grape (which doesn't hardly even grow this far north here,) and apple have enough sugar to ferment well on their own.
But I saw a cool video of like, hungarians or something making a liqueur out of wild cherries, on reddit before I got chased off there.
I've got a Youtube channel for you!
I think that man could ferment old socks and shoes and the result would be drinkable. If only once...
I tried hard cider once, using leftovers of wine fermentation, and the thing became undrinkable. Above 20% by liter. Too strong. I had to toss it out.
