I was just talking with someone about the old restaurants and cafes that would have the faded pictures of the food up in the light boxes.

No professionally staged, meticulously lit promo shots of impossibly perfect burgers. No AI slop. No looping video screens of people tearing and squeezing food in weird ways. Just a faded old photo that someone snapped exactly as it comes from the kitchen.

Stopped partway doing dishes?

Japan has the peak method of restaurant dish advertising for restaurants: Sanpuru

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I liked that, easy to see what you're going to get. Kore desu. Kill me for spending 10 minutes to slowly read the old style menu on the wall.

Also makes it easy as someone who doesn't speak much (really any) Japanese to know what I'll be getting if they don't have an English menu, or I'm unfamiliar with the dish

When will restaurants realize the ideal restaurant doesn't even have pictures of their food. A crinkled laminated text only paper menu, torn upholstery, and faded window paint is what the ideal restaurant looks like

Saw a guy do a presentation on how appearances shape people's perception, and one of the slides had two pictures of restaurant dining rooms: one run down with cracks in the wall, the other sterile and modern with Pier One style decor. He asked "Now which of these restaurants would you rather eat at?", and I don't think he was expecting the general consensus to be that the shabby looking restaurant's food would probably be way better.

I miss this one Ethiopian restaurant in a weird tiny building that was falling apart, it had barely any interior space and OH BOY their food was delicious. they closed now :(

[–] 0ops@piefed.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

Nah I definitely want the pictures, I just ask that they be real

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

That looks a little too spicy for me

I was at a restaurant that was doing a professional photo shoot for their food, it looked incredible.

The AI pictures an Indian restaurant in my area uses, really look like slop. Not like AI slop, but regular slop. Grey goo in tinfoil trays. I have no idea why they do that, the actual food looks better.

Is that the famous bread and water soup?

No, it's pretty well-behaved.

This thin gruel could have presentation & sugar added to it and be sold as a $14 aperitif

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 3 points 2 weeks ago

It looks like a soggy cracker in water.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

You're supposed to boil that until the water is gone, bro.
