Who the fuck believes anything that comes out of Elon Musk's mouth?

[–] trojanbark@lemmy.world 45 points 1 week ago (1 children)

12 year olds and people with the same brain capacity

They’ll get their $5000 after they vote in the midterms.

The "flying" tesla exists, though - there was a demo recently.

Now, it only has 1 seat, isn't street legal, is being sold on an invitation only basis for an undisclosed price, and uses compressed air to "fly" so it can't do so for any sustained period - so you won't see what the meme describes.

Also the versions that are legal and actually would be sold at best have some jets of air on the back to make them go faster, but that costs like 250k USD.

Flying and jumping are different. That car landed and rolled but didn't fly. The Wright brothers flew further than Tesla ever could.

[–] ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Yeah - that's why I put "fly" in quotes and said it couldn't do it for any sustained period of time.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This isn't flying, this is falling with style.

[–] BruhWaitWut@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even calling that hallowed out shell a car is a big stretch.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I don't trust that demo anyway. Show it off during the day.

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Right after they finish the self driving.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They’ll fix those cyber trucks blowing up too.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Didn't they already "fix" that by recalling all of the two-wheel-drive model ones?

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

me watching a tesla roadster blow up because they hit a pothole

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

"Pothole" being the codename for a homemade antitank mine that only goes off when it detects the Bluetooth MAC address of a Tesla roadster driving over

or just a normal pothole. have you seen how well built the cyber trucks are? now give it a few hundred litres of compressed air

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's probably never getting sold, it's definitely not going to be road legal if it is.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It has a flight time of about 12 seconds, of course it's never getting made

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 2 points 1 week ago

That is a stripped down shell l, not a car.

[–] Batman@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even if they can fly, don't think they could go over other vehicles without killing people. That downward force has to go somewhere.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because everybody knows to dive out of the path of overhead helicopters lest they be crushed.

[–] GardenGeek@europe.pub 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's a reason helicopters lift off from heli pads and not traffic jamed streets in the inner city...

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Apples to oranges comparison. Look into how helicopters generate lift, you seem to be misunderstanding the physics of the situation.

[–] GardenGeek@europe.pub 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or maybe I misunderstood your comment. To me, it sounded like you were responding to the objection that the Tesla’s cold thrust nozzles exert downward force by pointing out that helicopters do the same thing and nobody gets hurt. My response was based on the fact that helicopters also generate downward force/thrust, which is why people keep their distance from a helicopter taking off... which is also why a Tesla taking off in a busy street is a terrible idea.

So either you’re contradicting yourself now, or there’s a misunderstanding here.

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Definitely lots of misunderstanding going around. The meme makes no mention of thrust nozzles, that's just crazy dumb for any kind of flying car that would be landing anywhere with people and a clear indication this is all just vaporware at best or fraud. Regardless the person I was replying to was specifically referring to helicopters only, and so was my comment and people are in no danger of getting squished by an overhead helicopter (unless it lands on them).

[–] GardenGeek@europe.pub 1 points 1 week ago

Ah okay, now I get you! In this case I, once again, apologize for taking a shitpost too serious. Have a splendid evening!

Lmao. Single use boosters for that trick wont get us flying cars in 100 years lol

[–] Iron_Lynx@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Watch, the EU is gonna make it functionally, if not actually, illegal, if it isn't already, to have a car that can jump^[1]^ like that.

^[1]^: read: accelerate downwards at less than 9.81 m/s^2^ if unsupported by a solid thing beneath

Leave a deposit now! Teslas over me, Apteras all around me!

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When they first come out, there will probably be stories of people trying to do that but then crashing when they run out of compressed air but the traffic they are trying to avoid is still there and not leaving them room to land. Assuming they even maintain enough control for that to be relevant.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I'm imagining one trying to bypass traffic on a bridge and going sideways, crashing into a river.

[–] boobookittyfrick@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

Is this some future pov bs
