Now, increased demand for traditional fishmeal – which is made from small species caught in the open ocean – has sent the industry scrambling for alternatives.

The stuff being used to make fish feed is a byproduct of the poultry industry – it’s what is left over after the parts of the chicken consumed by humans and the remains used for cat and dog food have been removed.

People are ready to do anything, but stop eating meat.

[–] Truth_Hurts@lemmy.today -5 points 21 hours ago (21 children)

Correct, because it's essential to our diet and the best tasting things we have available.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Yes, that's why vegetarians don't exist.

Very smart take, very scientific, shows great intelligence.

[–] Steve@communick.news 5 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

It is why their numbers are so small.
And why some of them have to go back to eating meat after a time.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

You're seriously suggesting that there's not a lot of vegetarians because they die or go back to eating meat?

Wow.

[–] Steve@communick.news 3 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Not at all. I made no such association. Didn't even mention anyone dying. That's all you.

No, I'm suggesting there aren't many because not every one can tolerate it long term. Those I've know who can, were raised that way from infancy. But it seems our bodies, once adapted to animal protein, make it quite difficult for us to stop. Not impossible, just difficult.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world -1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Do you have any evidence of any of that?

I lived most of my life eating meat with every meal, stopped eating meat suddenly and got used to it in what, maybe a month?

I think that you have it backwards, it's not that you need to be raised vegetarian for it to be easy, it's just that people are so brainwashed thinking that meat is life that they just can't escape it without a conscious effort.

[–] Steve@communick.news 3 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

That's great for you. Again I never said it was everyone. But a portion of people who try, sometimes a few years later, they find that they have low energy, muscle mass and strength loss. Especially athletes and extremely fit people. Sometimes women notice similar problems when pregnant, and they have to eat meat until they give birth, then give it up again.

Vegetarians and vegans frequently claim it's always great for everyone, and the few drawbacks are just people not doing it right. But that isn't always the case.

They still... Have meat in their diet? I've never understood this argument.

It reaks of bad faith and bullshit.

Yes they eat less meat. No they are not a magic wonderland of vegetarians.

What's the life expectancy in India vs western countries? Remind me again lol

I rest my case

[–] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Isn't that more a case of low income and low access to health care? Loads of countries in that income bracket that have similar life expectancy while eating meat.

Was this an actual attempt at discussion or drive by lol trolling?

[–] Steve@communick.news -1 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Yes. As I said in another comment, people raised without animal meet tend to do fine. Most others have a difficult time.

[–] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Are you suggesting eating meat since birth changes you physiologically or that Skill issue?

[–] Steve@communick.news -1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Physiologically. Mostly gut biome I imagine. But I'm not doctor, I don't know specifically what it is. I just know a non zero number of p.. It may be an economic issue, being ablke to afford the right food.

[–] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

The gut bacteria thing might make sense, but a lot of people transition. They would then have the new biome. Extra farting and all.

I think it's a culture issue, as in the culture teaching you what works and what does not, etc. in terms of eating habits and recipes. Maybe once a robust culture forms around eating vegetarian food where you live, then maybe all the doubts might go away.

I don't know, it's an educated guess. I know they aren't richer in India, and they are doing fine.

[–] Steve@communick.news 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not talking about doubts. I'm talking about a group of people who have done it for years, and at some point noticed problems. They go to the doctor and find deficiencies in their bloodwork. Then go to a nutritionist to try to correct for it. Eventually they try eating fish or something for a few days and see improvement, seemingly overnight. They then have meat meals once or twice a week, and do fine on that.

Certainly we eat far more meat than we need, and the vast majority of us should cut back. But the insistence that meat should be or even could be, entirely eliminated from everyone's diet today if we all decided to, is just wrong. But if everyone cut back, even to half, perhaps the awful industrial farming conditions could be improved. That would also take some economic policy changes to make happen, but maybe.

[–] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

I agree eating meat can have good affect on people's health. I don't agree it's a simple 'eating meat is always better' deal. I personally know people who have trouble with animal protein. Also let's not forget the deleterious effects of eating red meat.

I'm not trying to be 'but what about the bad effects too!' person. I agree that eating meat can be good for you. I just also think that a whole nation of people eating vegetarian meals all their lives goes to show that it is possible and normal. I also think that a lot of people in that nation would benefit from eating meat, as you pointed out.

It's not a question of nutrition.

[–] Truth_Hurts@lemmy.today -1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

They suffer malnutrition often. Unless they are extremely wealthy.

For the masses to be healthy we need meat. It's the way it is.

[–] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Anything to back that claim up?

[–] Truth_Hurts@lemmy.today -2 points 18 hours ago (2 children)
[–] Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

They suffer malnutrition often.

Your datum for this claim is your bank account for that claim? Wut? Are you implying you're a vegetarian?

[–] feannag@sh.itjust.works 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

As of today in the UK (as an example)

Beef: 9.11 GBP / kg (at ~ 23g protein/100g raw beef) is 3.96 GBP /100g protein.
Tofu: 1.80 GBP/ 450g (at ~ 16g protein/100g tofu) is 2.50 GBP /100 protein.
So how exactly is meat cheaper?

[–] Truth_Hurts@lemmy.today -2 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (2 children)

We live longer if we eat meat and veggies look like shit lol. Skin and bones.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Wow, I didn't know they managed to resurrect some cavemen.

[–] nforminvasion@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

You're a toddler my dude. But you're also probably a troll who enjoys riling people up. So honestly, whatever...
