Now, increased demand for traditional fishmeal – which is made from small species caught in the open ocean – has sent the industry scrambling for alternatives.

The stuff being used to make fish feed is a byproduct of the poultry industry – it’s what is left over after the parts of the chicken consumed by humans and the remains used for cat and dog food have been removed.

So it's not that we grow chicken to feed it to salmon, we use the leftovers that would otherwise go to waste. This is good!

Granted, of course, that sanitary standards are followed. In the EU, I don't expect it to be a problem.

Y'all, a lot of farm raised tilapia is fed chicken manure or pellets made with manure. Look up some Aquaculture setups where chickens poop into a pond to feed fish, the fish feed water to fertilize plants.

Typically, pathogens don't jump and survive between species like this. This is a zero percent news item other than "why use inefficient chickens for the protein input?" Black soldier fly large eating compost and food waste should be the go-to option.

If we ever get invaded by aliens, they are gonna laugh their asses off.

So why don't you eat food you grow

See, it's really smart actually. We feed it to the chicken, then we feed the chicken to the salmon and then ww throw away most of it, but we eat some of it.

Your planet is dying.

Feed chicken to salmon

Feed Salmon to chicken

Holy shit I just found an infinite food hack

[–] flamingo_pinyata@sopuli.xyz 69 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

And next, were going to feed salmon remains to chicken. Close the circle of life.

[–] kungen@feddit.nu 17 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

We have already had that for a long time, fishmeal for example. One of the contributing reasons for high amounts of dioxins in egg production.

[–] ceiphas@feddit.org 1 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

And the fishy taste of eggs... Can remember egg packages with the claim 'made without fishmeal'

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 5 hours ago

and then salmon starts to taste like chicken.

[–] Waterpumpee@lemmus.org 1 points 6 hours ago

If you have a small lot you can keep chickens yourself. Know a few people around me doing that.

[–] DataCrime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Just one step away from genetically engineering the chicken salmon!

[–] treadful@lemmy.zip 8 points 11 hours ago

[–] blackshirt@lemmy.world 29 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

It will be when they start feeding them left over salmon heads, tails, fins, etc. These capitalists wont let that fine source of calories go to waste.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 hours ago

The chicken or the salmon?

[–] jdr@lemmy.ml 4 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

What if we make them eat the grasshoppers instead of us?

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not worried about salmon or chickens eating me.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 5 hours ago

chickens are omnivirous so yes they would eat you, they just need like hundresd of them to peck you.

[–] soyslurper2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Can we at least try eating grasshoppers first?

[–] jdr@lemmy.ml 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

The wings get stuck in my teeth 😞

I haven't tried huffing the powder though

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 5 points 16 hours ago

This is my new favorite meat replacement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjFDFsg7l60

More protein per pond than chicken breast with none of the fat and none of the colesterol.

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 14 points 21 hours ago (62 children)

People are ready to do anything, but stop eating meat.

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

Is that surprising? At all? It's literally in our nature.

I mean, no offense but I will continue to do what I can to be able to eat meat, it makes my life better.

I'm all for synthetic meats, or lab grown meats, as those become available. If there are more sustainable options, great. (As long as it tastes like meat)

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The nature of humans is absolutely not to eat meat everyday.

If anything, it's much more natural for humans to go without meat, than to eat meat everyday.

Also cancer is rarely making your life better.

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

It is the nature of humans to crave meat, we enjoy it. That's the real issue. There is a very real quality of life benefit it provides to us. Maybe you don't need that, and if so, that's great for you. But because it really does make life better for so many people, you're not going to see the majority of humans giving up meat any time soon. That's the reality.

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Nah dude, I love the taste of meat but I am 99% vegetarian since 2012 or so and we absolutely don't "crave" meat. That's a learned habit. Find enjoyable vegetarian meals and you will eat less and less meat.

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Hey, I lived mostly vegetarian for several years as well, I get it. It's totally doable, you do sort of get used to it. But when I stopped cooking for vegetarians, I went back to eating meat, and it was a relief.

[–] skujcici7755@lemmy.zip 21 points 19 hours ago

We have become obsessed with protein pushed by the beef industry in response to the increasing recognition that we are eating too much (cardiovascular disease, bowel cancer risks, etc)
