Rules

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Far-right*

AfD is not right-wing, but far-right.

For right-wing you'll have to look at the CDU/CSU. They forsook their centre-right heritage. CSU tends to be more right-wing, but nowadays I'm not so sure.

Edit: to add,

Centre-right: FDP
Centre-left is SPD
Left are Die Linke, GrΓΌnen.

Far-left isn't represented in the Bundestag at all. Locally there are the KP, DKP, (both ML) MLPD (Maoist), and SGP (Trotskyist) though. There are like two anarchist parties (B* and APPD), but they do not seem focused on anarchist communism. Closest to that is maybe SGP.

BSW is sometimes claimed to be far-left, but they only favour economic egalitarianism; they support neither the change of company structures nor actual abolition of repressive capitalist systems. At best, I'd label them as reactionary social democrats.

They're pretty much right extremists. In certain areas even confirmed by the court.

CDU is far-right at this point.

A serious cyberattack is shaking up the German political party landscape. Unknown hackers have hijacked internal mailboxes of the AfD and published enormous volumes of data with confidential contents on the internet.

The Federal Republic is looking at one of the largest known cyber incidents to date in the political party sphere. Extensive datasets purportedly originating from the AfD's internal communications were published on a website. According to initial findings, the stolen material comprises an astronomical 421,179 emails with a total volume of 281 gigabytes, according to "Bild".

Also of interest

The perpetrators did not limit themselves to mere data dumps: the platform published specially created summaries generated from the electronic messages with the help of artificial intelligence. Prominent figures of the federal party appear as senders, including party and parliamentary group leader Alice Weidel, honorary chairman Alexander Gauland, and Bundestag member Leif-Erik Holm. A direct inquiry to the operators of the dubious publication site has so far gone unanswered.

ID cards, invoices, and complete membership lists leaked

The scale of the leak goes far beyond everyday correspondence. According to "Bild", initial spot checks of the data package confirm that highly confidential documents from parliamentary and organizational day-to-day work were stolen:

  • Photo ID documents: A photo of the ID card of deputy Bundestag parliamentary group leader Markus Frohnmaier, as well as photos of other individuals' ID cards
  • Financial records: Internal invoices and detailed bank statements
  • Personal documents: References and confidential personnel records
  • Party internals: Completed membership applications as well as confidential membership lists of entire AfD district associations in North Rhine-Westphalia

The publication of such datasets touches on the most sensitive personal rights and security interests of the affected party members and staff.

Party confirms attack on external service provider

The party leadership in Berlin was confronted with the massive security breach on Monday. An AfD spokesperson confirmed the incident upon request but downplayed its scope: "In September 2026, there was a hacker attack on a hosting service provider of our party, in which parts of a small number of mailboxes β€” most of which had not been used for years β€” were apparently unlawfully copied."

According to the party, the attack was quickly stopped at the time. All users affected at the time were immediately informed of the data breach. According to official statements, current email accounts of the federal headquarters or the current party leadership were not compromised.

Origin and authenticity of the documents being examined by authorities

Despite the attempts at reassurance, it remains unclear whether all of the now-published data actually stems from this incident and whether the documents are authentic in their entirety. The AfD announced that it would subject the documents circulating online to a thorough examination. The affair is now likely to prompt German security authorities and data protection commissioners to investigate the true scale of the attack.

Unfortunately, it seems that the Germans will repeat the same mistakes as their grandparents, no matter what.

This time is a little different.

This time it's happening the world over because the fascists are way ahead on using the Internet for propaganda. And they're doing it more effectively and on a larger scope than radio ever did throughout its history.

Social media is a propaganda machine that has been harnessed to gain control. One of the things they have gained control of is all other major media.

And we all use it. Those who don't can now get their information from Bari Weiss.

The only reason we have a chance is that the truth makes a whole lot more sense. They do their best to insulate and inoculate those they've converted from those truths. But that should only go so far depending on the person.

There's only so many ways to keep convincing people the sky is green while others are trying to tell them it's blue. (And yeah, it's perfectly reasonable to want to scream it at them.)

There was facism outside of Germany in the 1930s too. There were facists in every single country.

[–] NotEasyBeingGreen@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 weeks ago

For sure. Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy... Oef. 😟

And what we also should do, is to move people onto sovereign, left-headed social media. Outreach and deradicalisation.

I think the only real "solution" is to have smaller, verified communities. You have to know the people you're interacting with are real people.

I don't believe this is something you can do fully anonymously. Someone has to verify you belong.

I've thought about creating a Lemmy instance limited to my neighborhood, but I'm not sure how to do a verification scheme yet. I know how Nextdoor does it.

[–] milbyte11@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

anonymity is important because the internet is a wild west and any verification scheme that connects an account to a real person and their location sounds like a prime target for hackers. we have already proven this with k-id and the like.

We unfortunately have a deadline to meet for repeating history in time for the 100 year anniversary...

OP, could you please provide a translation per community rule #1?
