I would like something like nostr for user accounts so that you could just go to any federation thing and be on it but I would like every federated thing to have a config tab combined with something like trust cafe where you can rate everything and your view would be based on your own private ratings (I don't think they are private in trustcafe. make make public private a user option) and then cap it off with as much configuration and more that piefed has to allow for configuring your feed.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago (1 children)

email

Email is the original federated service. It's the way you explain the fediverse to newbies.

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

well sorry for providing little description on the email part

what i mean is that i know email is federated but like it isn't easy to host and requires a bunch of stuff that you have to pay or not own for

so because the protocol's that the fediverse uses are mostly modern basically i mean that it is a easy to host email requiring fewer things and fewers money to spend on

[–] Jajcus@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What makes e-mail hard to host is not the protocol, which is actualy great (especially for its age) or implementations (they are even better), but the actual specifics of the service: volume, popularity, importance. All these pull various bad actors: spammers, scammers, big corporations wanting monopoly, etc. I don't think fediverse have means to fight that. E-mail services got a of mechanisms to fight most of that, and that makes it difficult to host.

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

maybe yes but since the implementation can have plugin support it will be likely that it wont be that hard (unless the plugin's have bugs)

especially if that implementation can defederate without bugs and also i expect people making those implementations can add a send limit per minute or something else

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

The problem isn't a lack of plugins. Email servers have all sorts of "plugins". Any spammer prevention plugin you can think of, and a thousand others that you haven't even imagined have already been implemented for email.

And email servers already defederate all the time. That's why it is hard to get small email servers to reliably send mail. You have to convince others to federate with you.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do you host any type of Fediverse server? If no, why not?

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

i do self host things just not fediverse i know to use nextcloud searxng and a bit more

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My point being, yes hosting email is a pain in the ass but it can be done. Hosting a Fediverse server is also a good bit of work. So email is the original federated protocol but there’s really no way to “fix” it.

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club -3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

maybe but also like i dont think we should fix email we should start from 0 again IMAP is rotting

[–] ShellMonkey@piefed.socdojo.com 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The hardest parts of email are the bits that have been pasted on after the fact to deal with issues like encryption, spam, and phishing that were't considered from the outset.

You can get self deploying packages that set virtually everything up aside from some DNS records maybe and dealing with the various spam lists that don't like dynamic home IPs.

Email though is just another addressed messaging service, no matter the protocols behind it, if something has the capacity to send mass unsolicited comms, someone will try and abuse that, and someone else will create mechanisms to prevent it, and then we end up with the same complications that email has in the cat & mouse world of controlling junkmail.

i want something that was reddit circa 2007-2013.

lots of nerdy cool stuff without the politics.

lemmy is too politics and not enough nerdy stuff.

Ethnical LinkedIn alternative

That seems complicated. Do I go on the Germanic or on the Slavic LinkedIn?

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

Traditional dance-posting

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 3 points 2 days ago

I think that's vutuv?

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

LinkedIn is mostly unethical because of it's user base. I call it facebook for corporate psychopaths.

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 days ago

this sounds great

I want something to get my wife off Pinterest.

[–] Okokimup@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Damn, guess they sell everything there now.

[–] Etnmarchand@feddit.online 1 points 1 day ago

i want a Pinterest replacement too. There is a project built on ATProto that functions a lot like Pinterest. I'd prefer something I could self host though.

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

pixelfed is likely gonna help her

[–] grue@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I was under the impression that Pixel was more like Instagram. I've never used either Pinterest or Instagram so I don't understand exactly what the differences are, but I'm reasonably sure there are some.

[–] Cherry@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Nope, it’s not the same. Far from it. I wish it was.

[–] kazerniel@quokk.au 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

tbh the main thing I'm missing from the existing fedi platforms is just generally the population and specifically my networks - why I still regularly visit Reddit, Facebook and Discord :/

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

you could be a part of the fediverse and make content for it on the parts that need it (such as loops and peertube) if you can and if you want to

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

one that is similar to indeed forums/ glassdoor reviews which allows to segregate fields, jobs, or certain areas of the industry by category, but without the astroturfing and shutting down, the only problem is getting a huge userbase to use it.

[–] Lehmuusa@nord.pub 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Maybe an upgraded mBin is what I'd prefer?

I'd like to have a platform that can read as many different Fediverse platforms as possible. The three main Forumverse platforms can interact with Pixelfed and Mastodon and whatnot, but that could be made work a bit better still. This is merely a matter of development resources. There are platforms that can do what I wish for, but all of them have their cons:

  • mBin supports having both Forumverse communities (or, "magazines", as mBin calls them) and Mastodon posts in the same feed. I really like that! But, it doesn't support all of Mastodon's features, such as quote posts. At the same time, mBin is also lacking in its support of PieFed/Lemmy posts and comments: It is especially annoying to me that it doesn't show images in comments, but replaces them with links I need to click in order to see the image alone and then press the browser's back button to see the comment itself - sans the image again, of course. And also, mBin does not support polls, mBin does not support Flairs, etc. But missing the images in comments is a deal breaker for me, when it comes to Forumverse comments. And not supporting quote posts is a deal breaker regarding Mastodon compatibility.
  • PieFed is planning to support Mastodon posts "sometime in the future, soonish". It was originally planned for early 2026, but it's gotten pushed down the priority list and probably won't happen during 2027.
  • Friendica can kind of do what I want, but its UI is incredibly complex to actually use. And it does not properly show Forumverse communities in the same feed where it shows everything else. And I really do not understand why the hell not. But also, when a user interface is as randomly built as that of Friendica, usually also the backend behind it is a tangled mess - this means, I don't really trust the data security of Friendica. With that kind of spaghetti UI design, it's likely to also have bugs that enable taking over people's user accounts. And also, I don't like it how Friendica forces me to @tag people in every comment that I write under Forumverse posts. Nor that it doesn't even show all comments!

So, give me a platform that supports as many different Fediverse platforms at once as possible, and does that so that any new features of any platforms will be supported within two months of them having appeared on some platform. And give that a simple clean UI that allows me to blend microblog toots and Forumverse posts in one unified feed. I believe that would get a lot of people to move from Fecesbook to the Fediverse. And that would make the world a tad bit more democratic.

(And for any devs: I know I'm asking for much here! What I'd like to see would take an incredible amount of programming resources. Especially the part where I'd wish for any new features invented by devs of other platforms to be implemented only a couple months after their original appearance elsewhere. But, this is a post about what would be ideal, not so much about what would be realistically possible. But maaaaybe, maybe if a more inviting attitude to attracting as many new capable programmers as possible would be used on some platform, something like what I dream of could become reality? You'd need a core group deciding what gets implemented and a very large group of mindless programmer monkeys and graphical design monkeys who would do the actual work of turning the ideas into reality. Now all main platforms - PieFed, Lemmy, mBin and Mastodon - are programmed by closed inner circles that want everyone to have a good grasp of the whole project, instead of anyone actively searching for any new capable hands to delegate parts of the programming to.

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 3 points 2 days ago

Now all main platforms - PieFed, Lemmy, mBin and Mastodon - are programmed by closed inner circles that want everyone to have a good grasp of the whole project, instead of anyone actively searching for any new capable hands to delegate parts of the programming to.

Mbin just made a call for help, so this doesn't look accurate to me for that project.

As you all might know it, Mbin is a rather small project with a small team. In fact the current size of the team is 1.5 developers (0.5 for the ones which only have partially time). While our active devs do what they can in their free time, this leads to slow feature and security updates, sometimes slow support and increasing stress for the remaining devs.

That's why I ask everyone who likes this project, has time of their own to donate and knows how to program with PHP (or is willing to learn it) to consider helping this project move forward. You can start with simpler features and submit them as PRs or even just help review existing PRs if full commitment to maintaining the codebase is currently too much. We are aware that parts of our codebase contains more spagett than some Italian restaurants, but we will help every newcomer to find their way through the sources. Every bit of support helps, as it also shows that we have a passionate userbase which does not want Mbin to wither away.

So, while I don't think Mbin can deliver on your expectations here anyway, if you have anything you'd like Mbin to improve, you can absolutely contribute it yourself.

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

that sounds great to me but will it be like piefed/lemmy or mastodon more

[–] Lehmuusa@nord.pub 1 points 2 days ago

Surely more like PieFed/Lemmy. Just like mBin currently is. It's easy to integrate microblog toots in a UI like that of PieFed, but much more difficult to integrate nested threaded discussions in the style of Forumverse into an UI like that of Mastodon.

[–] soratoyuki@piefed.zip 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Letterboxd, and to an extent Goodreads.

I just spent a solid chunk of time importing and correcting various accounts to NeoDB and Bookwyrm and they are both petty frustrating to use, especially with how much content is missing, mislabeled, or duplicated. Plus, they don't seem to federate with each other (understandable, in so far as very few parts of the Fediverse actually federate well together [unlike, perhaps, Mastodon and mbin]) or even support exporting/importing data from each other.

[–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

I don't mean to argue with you on your idea, but YouTube shorts, Instagram reels, and tiktok are the same thing. Loops basically is just that. The only difference I can think of (aside from maybe technical behind the scenes things in how each company did it) are the communities and content.

Is that what you want? Loops to just be more like shorts than tiktok?

[–] bacon_pdp@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Facebook but old school bbs that you self-host on a raspberry pi and every message is encrypted and you can only read it if the poster included you in the recipients.

So that you only see posts from the friends and family members (or other accounts if you are into that) who you follow.

Just a pull based community and not a single push notification in sight.

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

so it is that you make a post you send it to people and only those people can see it right?

tumblr. tumblr's style of post is much better than twitter. there's goblin.band but it's way too small

A proper platform for open science. Link doi, they get referenced, be able to search by doi, either interact with a pseudonym or identify with orcid.
I have some hopes for bonfire, as they are working on an open science flavor, but I also hope it would get broadly adopted.

[–] dirt_character@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mastodon with conversations. Maybe I'm just on the wrong instance, or not following the right people, but it's all just posts with empty comment sections.

[–] Adniem@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 days ago

you may want to follow people to find stuff

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago
  1. I can login using my user/pass and login to any of the instances.
  2. I can up/downvote things like on lemmy/piefed.
  3. I can create custom feeds for myself either mastodon style OR lemmy/piefed style with sudo algorithms.
  4. I can subscribe to and fedi service and it just works.

I don't know if there's much to a platform that would make it pornography-specific. I'd think that one would just use an existing platform for pornography.

Maybe tagging based on geographical legal restrictions or something. Or maybe more extensive efforts to maintain privacy than is typically the case with ActivityPub.
