Rules

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

LOL.

Every kid learns that you have to stand up to bullies.

If Ukraine just chucks in the towel, then Putin will just move on to the next campaign.

She's defending Russia's imperialism in broad daylight. She's saying Ukraine is to small to defend themselves from Russia. If that argument was valid, who else wouldn't be allowed to defend themselves from Russia? Belarus, Georgia, Estonia. Is Russia entitled to invade and conquer all of them simply because they are significantly larger? Ukraine didn't start an unwinnable war. They are defending themselves and fighting for their very lives

A good solution to that problem is making Russia small again. It should be split into sovereign nations giving back the land and cultures that they took forcibly.

She isn't very eloquent. She can't explain this in other terms than "Ukraine is too small", but TOGETHER we are not too small, that's the whole point. She's a fucking nonce.

If you want to know what happens if she and Marine Le Pen in France get the power,

So:

  • In the US, Trump's last year is 2028. Mind, Vance has generally been considered to be the most-likely Republican nominee and is isolationist, but I don't know how well he'd do, given Trump's now-very-high unpopularity and his association with the Trump administration. Rubio, who I've seen listed as being the second-most-likely Republican nominee, is a lot more conventional, and I'd assume that any Democratic president would likely also be. 2028 elections are still a long way out, so hard to make many calls yet.

  • In the UK, while Reform topped polling for a while, Labour has finally managed to pull a little ahead, and the Conservatives look to me likely to do so as well. So my guess is that the likelihood of Prime Minister Farage is on the downswing.

  • In France, RN (run by Le Pen) presently holds a large polling lead. LFI (run by MΓ©lenchon) just crept ahead of ENS (run by Macron). Elections are only about six months out.

  • In Germany, AfD is polling on top. The next federal election may not happen until as late as 2029, however, so it could be quite some time away.

My understanding is that the German political system can theoretically hold a party with a plurality but not majority of votes out of executive power if everyone else chooses to do so; this is known as the cordon sanitaire. In the past, this had by convention applied to far-right parties. However, I don't know whether this will continue to hold.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordon_sanitaire_(politics)

A strict political non-cooperation is only exercised against right-wing parties, such as the Republicans, and even the Republicans have exercised a cordon against the neo-Nazi The Homeland. Since 2013, the established major parties have refused to form state-level coalitions with the new right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD). Brandmauer (firewall) is the term most often used in Germany to refer to this non-cooperation policy against the AfD.[24]

In February 2025, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany put forward a non-binding motion, taking AfD votes into account, in the Bundestag to push through a on the detention of undocumented foreigners at borders. This was the first time since 1945 that the cordon sanitaire had been broken in Germany. This event provoked large-scale demonstrations across Germany, with between 160,000 and 250,000 people in Berlin on February 2, and over 220,000 demonstrators in several of the country's major cities the day before.[25][26]

Russia in 4 years wasn't able to achieve anything and they are now stuck. They failed on all measures. They tried mercenaries, arsenal from other countries, boots on the ground from other countries, and all sorts of campaigns to make Ukraine and their support to fall. All failed.

I would say Russia is not half as strong as it tries to present itself.

Just tangerine mussolini and this kind of dump politicians fall for it.

The afd is a right-wing, extremist party, with ideas that are a direct threat to democracy. Among all the rightwing parties in Europe, this one is the most dangerous, as it is, at its core, deeply fascist. It’s pulling in uninformed voters, and may well be the biggest party in Germany soon; political chaos will ensue, and ordinary people will suffer the most.

[–] bufalo1973@piefed.social 2 points 1 hour ago

AfD is the new name of the NSDAP.

[–] majster@lemmy.zip 7 points 5 hours ago (4 children)

I don't think Putin is controlling them. They just want to grab opportunity of the dismantling system for their delusions of grandeur. Which is worse. That means that getting rid of Putin will change little because other shitheads will continue.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 8 points 2 hours ago

He is not controlling all that they do, but he is funding them and and telling them what to think about certain issues. This take on Ukraine being a common talking point among all right wing parties across Europe (and the world) is not a coincidence.

[–] harcesz@szmer.info 8 points 2 hours ago

They are directly funded by Russia as is most of European far right and odd tankie party.

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 9 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

That doesn't explain why they parrot Putin's speeches.

[–] majster@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

It does. They want a might makes right system for them to operate from. Its why Trump followed Putin in its logic. Trump got Venezuela and Iran that way. If we are lucky we will never know what AfD wants to get out of this.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 5 points 2 hours ago

It is very naive to think there is no collusion going on though. We already have plenty of proof that Putin funds Afd and similar right wing parties in Europe.

[–] Ravi@feddit.org 15 points 4 hours ago

It may change their funding though.
