I'm pretty sure notepad.exe is actually below the kernel. Its load bearing.

[–] Infernal_pizza@lemmy.dbzer0.com 65 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I can confirm it's not. One cool feature Windows does have is Windows sandbox, which lets you instantly start a blank Windows VM with no persistence. I was playing around with it yesterday and discovered it doesn't include notepad in the guest OS!

[–] CameronDev@programming.dev 33 points 1 week ago

I'll bet the hypervisor for that VM is notepad based /j

still kinda pissed they got rid of edit.com after win7....

[–] i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

They brought it back (well, a modern version) in Win 11.

It's available for Linux too!

Recently revived my old gaming PC, decided to put Bazzite on it. Was a bit surprised to see that sudoedit had a menubar and everything, used to it being vim or something. Got even more surprised when I found out it was made by fucking Microsoft. Yuck.

[–] Peffse@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)

is notepad.exe still around? I was sure they had replaced it with a new Microsoft Store app with copilot and ads.

[–] OliMoli2137@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

yes, and i think you can open it with win+r notepad

[–] bold_omi@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Yes, but they made it dumber.

[–] DeadDigger@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

Notepad++ is in my opinion. It just should be at the side in mid air supporting a big lever under cmd

Obligatory XKCD:

[–] ArsonButCute@programming.dev 1 points 5 days ago

Didn't they fix that in a more recent build? I could've sworn I'd read that it was rebuilt in... Not react

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Glad I'll never have to experience that

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Literally everything you do is going to spike CPU usage it's called having an efficient CPU that can idle for microseconds.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 36 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And ya'll bitch about systemd 🫤

[–] softwarist@programming.dev -1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

To be fair, systemd is like the Windows 11 of Linux software.

[–] apftwb@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

You are thinking of snap

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 7 points 1 week ago

Hardly. It does what it needs to then a bit too much more but in my experience all the pieces at least fit together and I've never had any instability from systemd.

we're gonna put copilot in EVERYTHING! it'll be great

bill arrives for the compute

we're gonna take copilot out of EVERYTHING it'll be uh

[–] jubilationtcornpone@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lol. Work is currrently trying to cram Copilot into critical business processes despite it being incapable of doing very basic things.

However, it has shed light on the fact that we have people in management who dont understand the fundamentals of how our business operates. Not that anything will be done about it.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

have they tried replacing management with copilot?

I mean with some of the managers I hear about, it couldn't be worse than the current situation....

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've always said that most middle management can be replaced by LLMs. And not even the more expensive models. Gemini flash would probably do about as good of a job as most middle managers.

Of course an LLM couldn't do the job of a really good middle manager. But most middle management is basically doing basically what LLMs do, and hallucinate and get things wrong just as often.

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

We taught the AI to speak like a middle manager and thought that meant the AI was sentient, instead of realizing that the middle managers aren't

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 28 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's horrifying, but I can’t look away…

[–] flamingos@feddit.uk 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

File explorer should be way bigger.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 29 points 1 week ago

And with spiderwebs of connecting lines tying it to pretty much every block both above and below it.

That tree reads like “build an apple orchard to discover gravity”.

Not 100% sure, but I think civilization 6

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Goog's image search agrees with you: "The image shows a section of the Atomic Era technology tree from Sid Meier's Civilization VI". One thing AI is good for.

[–] fractal618@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can you make the copilot icon 7 times bigger and have it pulsate?

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Like a giant throbbing ...artery

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago

I miss taskmanager. Should be right on top win32

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

About cmd: if you trace back things like right-click > print, it's usually a switcheroo between 7 registry keys and 5 directories that ends in some.dll /arg.

[–] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah, Context Menus just work like that.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Not sure what the Apple logo is doing there, though Macs did have Boot Camp until the Apple Silicon models.

They seriously banned "microslop" on the official Discord?

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 3 points 1 week ago

Part 2: ReactOS stack

I love these type of memes XD

I love that nothing actually uses the drivers
