Palmer Luckey of Anduril is teaming with Ben Lamm of Colossal Biosciences to launch Warhound, a startup dedicated to genetically engineering and cloning dogs for service in war, police work and first responder work.

Speaking to Wired, Lamm explained that the project was twofold. One part of the project would oversee the genetic engineering and cloning of the ideal dogs for war, and the other would develop tech for them to use on battlefields.

If you ever wonder how 200M could be raised for this, just think to yourself:

  • Step 1: Dogs
  • Step 2:

GTA III called, they want their main protagonists shirt back.

I can’t imagine how many dogs this bag of diarrhea is going to kill for this project.

Or like they could just design robot dogs.

[–] NotAnOtter@lemmus.org 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's way cheaper to make an animal go blow itself up rather than build an entire robot to go get blown up.

Then they lose the dog hack. It's both a police officer and a genetically modified wolf. If the police officer is biting you, then you need to stop resisting. What kind of monster would hurt a dog just doing its job.

[–] NotAnOtter@lemmus.org 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"resisting" while actively being harmed/injured is and always will be a sadistic joke.

"stop resisting!" while I break you shoulder. Nice.

The yelling, "drop the weapon!!!!" after unloading a clip makes my blood boil. Like are they for fuckin' real.

TF is it with these tech lord trash taking LOTR names for businesses? Anduril, Palantir, etc?

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"The Palantir stones themselves cannot lie, but powerful users like Sauron can selectively control what is shown to trick or break the will of others (such as Denethor or Saruman)."

Almost like a confession. It is like some idiot read 1984 and decided it is in humanity's best interest to install the goverment in the book, completely senseless and sociopathic.

You know the Nazis were obsessed with esoteric fairytales? It’s like that

So he can get 200 million for dogs of war but I can't get it for knots of peace?

Insanity....

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This is puzzling. Robot dogs have more potential, and German sheppards and Dobermans have good mix of agility speed and strength as it is. Would take about 10 years to get 5 generations of supremacy. An army takes an army of trainers.

I get that the goal is genetic engineering rather than breeding. But getting dogs to make 8 babies per year is orders of magnitude cheaper than test tubes and incubators at volume.

This is the founder of andruil. He has suggested roofying women with oxytocin to make them better wives. He is exactly the kind of person to believe that having war dogs is "cool" and "awesome!".

I hope when he's showing them off someday, the dogs attack and maul him. Bonus if it happens on stage with hundreds of cameras filming him and people laughing.

Just sucking up government cash under a veneer of credibility.

All the army dogs propaganda was to white wash the military's image dumbass.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (3 children)

We already have that. Marines. They're called Devil dogs. While half joking; the cocktails of injections--some completely experimental, kinda makes you wonder.

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Yeah but they call themselves that.

No one else calls them that. It's like a dude at a frat party trying to invent his own nickname. He keeps introducing himself as Cobra or Maverick or some shit and everyone just rolls their eyes and says "sure thing Steve whatever you say."

Back in my day we genetically engineered dogs for war the old fashioned way.

Massive inbreeding.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This would seem like an opportune moment for us to ask that age-old question: "What could possibly go wrong?"

It's going to be Africanized killer bees all over again. But worse. Much, much worse.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 8 points 2 days ago

I look forward to a graphic on a map that changes every few months of "Americanized War Dogs" filling the entire western hemisphere.

"They came and bred with my chihuahua! The puppies don't bite ankles, they slash tendons..."

[–] just2look@lemmy.zip 37 points 3 days ago (10 children)

So this is awful and stupid, but what I really want to know is what they think they can genetically engineer that can out perform a Belgian malinois for energy and physicality or a bloodhound for scent work. Like working dogs are already incredibly finely tuned through massive breeding programs.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 48 points 3 days ago (3 children)

They're not looking to make a better dog, they're looking to make a patentable dog.

What's next dipshit, tracker jackers? Mockingjays? I mean for fuck's sake, these assholes are ordering up all the horrific, dystopian shit movies and books and stories made up to be awful. And they want it, in real life.

And yes, obviously Susan Collins didn't coin genetically engineered war dogs in stories, but it's what I thought of first.

[–] SirActionSack@aussie.zone 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I was thinking Snow Crash Rat Things.

We talking bullet proof dogs? Dogs with guns? If not, you're just talking about piles of dead dogs.

[–] theblurstoftimes@leminal.space 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I’m just imagining that this is going to be more like the book/movie The Plague Dogs.

Why does he want to create a Warg?

Edit: right, Wargs don't rebel.
