I've gotten to the point that I just subscribe to whatever service for like a month of there's something I want to watch.

At the height of the pandemic I had like five services and realized that I was just opening an app, browsing, then opening the next and browsing ad nauseam.

I bought a few DVDs and Blu-rays for my background noise and can go to the library if I get real bored.

If I wasn't a parent I'd cancel it. Might cancel it anyway...

I cancelled Disney and Netflix. I sail the seas, however the kids/family do miss recommendations and discovery. Wonder if theres some way of exporting my plex watch data for recommendations.

If you use seerr along with the arr stack, you can actually explore all the new releases and back catalogue of the major platforms. Hook it up to usenet and for a couple of bucks a month and a little home server you have everything you need in probably max 10 minutes wait time.

All the kids stuff on Netflix takes up like 2tb if you just host it yourself.

You can watch the same exact shows on a pirate bay or something similar. There's a torrent of similar sites too.

I go to netflix looking for particular titles, and watching them. I'm not browsing around it or anything.

Its just a question of time and economics that streaming will become just as awful and enshitified as cable once was.

By definition and stock valuation, this has to happen for the money invested in these companies to make sense.

streaming is pretty expensive to maintain by a company. its a loss lead when they have shows, jsut to get people to subscribe.

My friend, I don't want to gainsay, but we are way past that point already.

[–] DannyMac@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

And yet my family won't let me cancel Netflix. Is this grounds for divorce?

[–] reka@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

We're cancelling this month. I realised I only watch one show. I have acquired the show and put it on jellyfin.

[–] CalemitousVariantK@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Maybe they should stop cancelling shows?

It's increasing amounts of garbage with Korean and Indian content, also as bad.
