They say its all about distro hoppin baby
There so many options it is gettin crazy
I’m ferrin and carryin my files from SSD
Gonna need that when I reformat my PC

Its gettin hard in this economy
to find all the right parts at an honest fee
And the only option left that I can see
switching to an OS that will work for me

    Ubuntu I adore ya
    But this week is Fedora
Linux Mint got me through March
By the way I used Arch

    Every day the list grows
an endless number of brand new distros
    One thing every homie knows
    we all hate on windows

I'm just gonna stick with Fedora cause I'm white and nerdy.

    [–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

I used to be a Linux Mint user, but Fedora has become my mainstay for a while now. It feels like the perfect blend of stable yet cutting edge.

    [–] bigmclargehuge@lemmy.zip 40 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I’m a break hopper. If I like a distro. I’ll use it. Months and sometimes years. Then, if there’s some kind of breakage and I can’t figure it out and I decide to do a fresh install, I’m like β€œwhy not try something new”

    [–] NutinButNet@hilariouschaos.com 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Makes it easy as a gamer. My only worry is all the wear from installing my games each time with the high cost of storage nowadays.

But it’s always nice to start from scratch with a new distro and not bringing any baggage with you.

    [–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can always have a partition for your data separate from your boot partition. Then you just mount that on any distro you run and you're good to go. I have a drive from when I used Windows for media, and I've never reformatted it. Your distro doesn't care where data came from, as long as it can read it.

    [–] BluescreenOfDeath@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

If you're still using a data drive formatted as NTFS, and you're not using Windows anymore, it's best to change the filesystem.

Linux NTFS drivers are pretty good, but it's still reverse engineering a proprietary filesystem. Sometimes it misbehaves.

If you're using something like ExFAT then ignore me.

    [–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, I need to switch it at some point, but it's a 4TB HDD, and my other drives are smaller. I need to delete a bunch of stuff to be able to reformat it.

    [–] BluescreenOfDeath@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Depending on the amount of data, you might be able to shrink the existing NTFS partition, create a partition next to it of the proper filesystem type, move the data between the partitions, delete the NTFS partition, and expand the replacement.

But I wouldn't attempt that on ant data you care about unless you have backups. I've done things like that a lot working in the tech industry, and sometimes things just break.

    [–] bigmclargehuge@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

So with hdd prices, not super tenable but i keep all my games on a 2nd drive formatted as ext4.

    [–] JonEFive@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

I'm at that point with Solus right now. They messed up so many things when they switched to Wayland. Definitely wasn't ready for release. Trying to figure out what to try next.

    [–] RedIce25@lemmy.world 32 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Love this song, "Play me online. Well, you know that I'll beat you. If I ever meet you I'll control-alt-delete you" is gold.

I feel the line "While your computer's crashing, mine's multitasking. It does all my work without me even asking'" is very relevant today.

    [–] grue@lemmy.world 42 points 1 day ago (2 children)

"I got me a hundred gigabytes of RAM"

Even almost 30 years later it's still a flex 😭

    [–] Hal@piefed.nz 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Your Windows boots up in what, a day and a half"

    Somehow still relevant too.

    [–] adarza@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago

turned one on a half hour ago. still waiting for the disk and cpu activity to mellow out.

expected, though. it is a scrap-tier laptop with slow hdd and win11 that is not completely up-to-date.

    [–] BladeFederation@piefed.social 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And on CachyOS I often do "upgrade my system at least twice a day, I'm strictly plug and play"

    [–] grue@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

We need to find out if Weird Al uses Arch, BTW.

    Hit install and never stop
I'll tell you how I distrohop
There's no flavor I'd say no to
'cept that faschy one (you know who)
    got a hundred boxes runnin'
and a vendor ain't locked one in
Drop a new one and I'm on it
    jumping ships like the bubonic
    keeping ancient silicon churning
    endless new OS smell burning
I'll be jumping 'til I drop
to the beat of the endless distrohop

    [–] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I always end up back at Arch, its the old reliable. Although I do have one system running just Nix these days as well.

    [–] rounding_error@lemmy.today 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Arch is the "old reliable?" πŸ₯²

    [–] adarza@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it's what they have the most experience re-installing.

    [–] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 5 points 21 hours ago

Honestly, it's the OS I can usually fix without having to resort to a reinstall. Sure it breaks sometimes, but those breaks are pretty easy to repair.

    [–] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 2 points 21 hours ago

Once you get used to its quirks, yeah.

    [–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's all about the pentium's baby.

    [–] edgesmash@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Your grammar just blew my mind. Thank you.

After all these years I just now realized Pentiums should be Pentia.

    [–] username_1@discuss.tchncs.de 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I use Debian since the early 2000s. Never had a reason to even think about changing the distro.

    [–] threeonefour@piefed.ca 15 points 1 day ago

Years ago I saw a picture of yuri that said "Debian is the distro for lesbians" and that sold me on it.

    [–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

    Distrohopping is just OS tourism.

You gotta live the ecosystem. Vote in their elections. Contribute to their package managers. Then you can hop if its not for you.

    [–] joonq@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Theres nothing like spending a couple of hours setting up ur new distro of choice only to go "naah im kinda bored i wonder if theres something better" πŸ˜‚ Its never ending cycle 😫

    [–] rozodru@piefed.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

ugh that's totally me. I've literally tried everything, even all the BSDs, and there are many that I like.

I don't know I just find it fun to install a linux distro or BSD and set it up, see what will work, what doesn't, etc.

The beauty of it is now I can install anything with ease and i'm familiar with pretty much every package manager out there. Favourite install: Gentoo. Least favourite: Slackware.

what I changed more were DEs and WMs. I could never find the right one that I absolutely loved for years. Finally I just ended up building my own and put in all the stuff I wanted.

    [–] dudleyflippendoodle@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Hey fella, I bet you’re still living in your parents cellar, downloading picture of Sarah Michelle Gellar

And posting β€œme too” like some braindead AOL-er I should do the world and cap you like Old Yeller

You’re just about as useless as JPEGs to Helen Keller

Weird Al did not need to make these lyrics slap so hard but I’m so glad he did.

Certified fresh meme every time lol.

    [–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Part of me is like "just run a VM" other part of me is like "hardware comparability is a major part of choosing an OS".

Also, just friggin at least run a fedora VM and shove every DE in it until you figure out what you like. Maybe you actually just want to try a different DE.

    [–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

    suggestions for better rhythm:

    I distro-hopped every Linux system,
gave some props, the rest I dissed 'em.
You had your OS more than a week?
Pave that shit, man, it's antique!

    [–] swab148@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Tell Weird Al, he wrote it

I've been distro shopping since the late 90s. Think I've finally settled: Bazzite (+distrobox) and CachyOS. 🀞

    [–] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I jumped from Windows 10 straight to CachyOS (which you should've mentioned is Arch btw). Haven't looked back since.

I've been meaning to switch and was gonna do it when I get a new computer (any decade now..). Funnily enough it was my frustrations with getting Docker running that led me to pull the trigger.

    [–] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Arch purists might get offended, since I didn't build it from scratch πŸ˜†

    [–] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah, if you didn't code the kernel yourself you're a newb.

Us filthy casuals, using a polished Calamares installer, dare not claim the stolen valor of those that manually tune their OS for more time than I spend using the OS...lol

I believe yours says, "Copilot" on the side.

    [–] Caption_Mo@reddthat.com 2 points 1 day ago

I hopped mainly among a few. Then it was Debian for a long time. Then hopped again for no particular reason. My Mint kernel panicked once a few weeks ago, so I might hop again.
