I wonder how much of Reddit's operating costs stem from the decision to host images and video. Seems like if it was just text, it would be dirt cheap.

the real reason, is they lost alot of traffic from the combination of bans, OPENAI/GOOGLE s own ai not finding reddit useful to scrape anymore. the lurking that people did, was result of the bans. they alleged people were just looking at the summaries from the AI not visiting the site.

They are going to end up burning the whole thing to the ground in a bid to make investors money on something that never had hard quantifiable monetary value to begin with in a way that you could easily turn up the dial on "line go up" enshitification like Google can with ad impressions.

Its a fancy web forum, a big popular one for sure, but there are God knows how many similar options out there already competing for users. There is a very low ceiling on just how profitable it could ever be as a business all on its own.

There is a reason a lot of these websites, like Gamespot for example, ended up consolidating into holding companies that own a bunch of them.

Coincidentally, the fediverse is suddenly gaining a lot of new users, especially Lemmy/Piefed

I joined Matrix today, It's been 4-5 hours, I've seen multiple other users joining aswell, asking for what client is the best one or how to do X. For sure a lil exodus is happening.

I remain utterly discombobulated that 90% of redditors haven't already migrated here. What exactly are they waiting for? Lemmy clearly is more than good enough already.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

its the lack of content actually. the last instance that got shut down had way more content than now, because people dont stick to one place and grow them, they just go to ever smaller and smaller communities.

Judging by comments it's almost entirely the lack of content on lemmy puts people off

I've been trying to distance myself from Reddit and I think that settles it for me. I can get my share of the dead internet elsewhere!

Update:

I deleted my Reddit Account. Now, I must consider moving off Proton...so much change.

I'll make my own dead internet, with hookers, and cocaine!

According to Huffman, Reddit has grown to the point where personalization is increasingly necessary to help users find relevant communities and discussions.

More lies from Spez.

The change could also benefit Reddit’s advertising business by allowing it to serve more personalized ads

The actual reason.

It hurt itself in its confusion.

yep, they've been turning up the dial for some time now ...slowly implementing anti-mobile browsing nags and locking down content by classification. And good on them, nothing will ruin their run faster than their own enshittification efforts.

How funny, it's been a logged out only experience for me for years now.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 19 hours ago

they have been thwarting peoples attempt to be active users for the last year, and now they want them to login. they thought the ones they dint banned were enough to scrape from with AI.

i bounced at the cookie consent dialogue of the linked post. 1751 partners and no umbrella reject, fuck off 🤣

i would not mind reddit becoming life in only if it didn't feed and feed on ai on the side, ie. if it became a truly human discussion (again). it's that their plan?

[–] Hueristic_Autistic@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Well, I think they're thinking that AI bots can't see the page because they can't log in and it'll protect open source information from being obfuscated by Ai. In reality though, it just forces inconvenience for the humans.
