I still use Reddit from time to time (without an account) because a lot of sports subs aren't really prevalent here. But looks like that's gonna go bye bye.
Not defending that site at all, but not sure who's to blame more here, Reddit or the whole AI shitshow?
They just want to know which accounts are permitted to scrape them for textual LLM training material (because Reddit Inc has a contract with them) vs which ones are not permitted.
The byproduct of this is intensifying a cult like environment where its easier to gaslight people, but that's ancillary.
Even being able to better drown the user base in more, and more specifically targetted ads, even that ain't the main thing. Everybody in the online advertising world knows that the actual metrics that 'describe' how effective ads are... are largely bullshit, and theyre only going to become more bullshit as more LLM bots are spun up and the average person just has less money.
Its enshittification 101, when user base growth phase stops/plateaus, lock in the user base, squeeze harder and harder untill there just isn't any money left.
The main thing is maximize profit, ie wealth extraction.
When I joined reddit it was well over ten years ago, and the reason I joined was because I searched the net for something and got quite a few answers from there.
I then looked up certain things there but over a bit of time, probably a few weeks or so. Then I decided to join it. (Then it went to shit, the app debacle happened and I left).
Anyways the only reason I joined was because the info/entertainment was easily attainable. If I were forced to join or login all those years ago then I would've just moved on.
Christ, most random websites get instantly dismissed if I feel like I'm being forced to join it.
These posts and comments about reddit are akin to stalking your ex on Facebook and reveling in their unraveling.
Funny thing is that apple freezes the app (even if you are logged in) and pops up an "age verification" window. You can just close it and continue browsing.
(... At least for now)
