Fuck this guy what a total freak

I mean, he has a point. Hardware is used way more efficiently in the data center, and any sort of deficit is best resolved in a centralized system due to more efficient resource allocation. The same setup could be used like 2 hours a day for your personal needs, or 24 hours a day to serve many people.

THAT SAID, their greed and unsatiable desire to make the number go up by hooking us into subscription economy with ever rising costs is what led us here and it leaves us with little choice but to accept the less efficient way and host these things ourselves.

Remember the times not so long ago when self-hosting was an enthusiast hobby instead of necessity? Barely anyone non-geeky bothered with it, because what existed served people well. Now, having to build our own services remains the only sane choice, and the only way out of the nightmare Sam, among others, has built with his own hands.

Only for a rather narrow definition of efficiency, though. For raw compute power, yes, but you'd also be adding a whole bunch of overhead from all the network traffic and routing that would be necessary for that sort of thing to work in the first place.

If people used their desktops like in the old days where you'd connect to a mainframe or master computer, you'd end up needing computing hardware on both ends anyway, since the user side would need to be enough to be able to connect and send all the interactions to the master computer. At that point, you could just buff up the client computer, and do all that in the user's home.

There's also an argument that some of the basic problems would still apply anyway. A data centre does not fully utilise 100% of its capacity. There'd always be some reserve to have failover if a server dies, or there's a sudden spike in load, like with a home machine.

It doesn't fulfill the same user case. One can be used offline, the other cannot. One can be used without a subscription, the other cannot. One needs to be running constantly to meet targets, the other can be run whenever I want. One has that memory being used by very specific services, the other has that memory being used for whatever I want to use it for. Why should we care about an efficiency factor that really only benefits Sam Altman and ignores all other metrics?

If you think he has a point, I think you are being dazzled by the inherent proposition of an implementation in the ideal egalitarian society, which we do not live in nor is he really interested in providing.

"The entire way people use computing in the whole World should change so that my business model has a small chance of being viable"

-- Sam Altman

[–] SplitTheUSInFour@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nope. We're slamming out our software, canceling our accounts, and running things ourselves. Requires a lot less electricity and works faster. Efficiency is king in business. You sir, are inefficient and no one enjoys giving you their money.

This idiot never learned the golden rule: everybody is using everybody. Even him. It's within the customers right to do this themselves. Don't play the game if you can't handle the rules.

[–] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Most people don't understand just how little compute they actually need to run their lives, a few basic self hosted apps on a 10+ year old laptop sitting in your closet can replace at least 85% of your dependency on big tech. You get a better experience, and your data doesn't ever leave your house.

"Rent-seeking psychopath desires all the rent"

[–] mobyduck648@lemmy.world 109 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Literally the mentality of the English land-owning gentry enclosing the ancient commons and driving people off the land into dependency on them. It was bullshit then, and it's bullshit now.

It's straight up kleptoparasite mentality.

Little bitch gnome wants to prevent your digital ai sovereignty

[–] Bluefruit@lemmy.world 171 points 2 days ago

Altman argued that ongoing memory supply chain woes were because selfish individuals wanted to run their AI models locally instead of leaving the remaining AI chips alone for hyperscalers to hoard in data centers.

Selfish? We're selfish?

Goooo fuck yourself. You're the problem you fucking cunt, and you know that.

Funny how »global allocation efficiency« always ends with everyone renting access from the company whose CEO wants to do the allocating. Local AI offers privacy, independence, and no monthly tollbooth. Apparently the real waste of RAM is letting people control what they own.

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 102 points 2 days ago (34 children)

From an efficiency POV it absolutely is significantly better to concentrate compute power in data centers, because when you're not using it then somebody else can. When those resources are in your private computer, it sits idle most of the time with all it's potential wasted.

that being said, he can go eat a hot ball of lead. Fuck him for wanting to take away peoples free access to compute power.

So what Sam Altman is suggesting the part of socialism that makes people fear it (extreme utilitarianism run by falliable if not biased leaders) without the part that makes people support it (a more equitable distribution of wealth that makes sure everyone's needs are met and the removal of an influential class that perpetuates undesirable and unnecessary conditions for their own personal gain.)

I would rather Sam Altman gets hit with a car, but here we are.

You can take my ram from my cold dead hands.

I'd rather Sam Altman didn't own a home

Hey everybody,

Definitely don’t buy a 24GB Tesla P40 GPU on eBay for $350.

Also please don’t use Gemma 4 on it for 3 parallel sessions with frontier intelligence.

Also don’t install Tailscale and Open Web UI to get the exact same user interface and usability on the go.

Thanks, Sam A

Well, I absolutely hate the idea of that fuckong gnome consuming the oxygen of this planet. He should just stop using it. Just sayin'

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 135 points 2 days ago (9 children)

“But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of [dynamic RAM] sitting in their own computer,” he added.

You mean, like how its been literally this entire time?

[–] Whelks_chance@lemmy.world 98 points 2 days ago (17 children)

It's not entirely incorrect. It wouldn't be efficient for us to all purify our own rainwater or generate our own electricity at home either. Centralising stuff is more efficient.

But then it should be treated as a public service and heavily regulated. They can't have it both ways.

I for my part have started to be on the lookout for auctioned off cheap PC hardware to build up a spare part depot. I'd rather go back to MS-DOS gaming before I rent a single CPU cycle from these people.

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This guy has become terrible at hiding what his true intentions are. The CEOs want to deny people power so they can hold it over others. It will not work, and local models under 100B are already capable of automating some very powerful tasks.
