Ah, the classic case of "communists want to abolish private property, capitalists want to abolish personal property".

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

Truke.

For any liberals or libertarians and what-have-you. I don’t like the feeling of taking porky’s stuff any more than you. But porky wanted to take my stuff first!

He seems pretty scared of locally run AI. I always had a hunch that this will break the necks of all those AI corporations. If you can just have your own AI agent instead of being under the control of those tech bro freaks, then it's only businesses and government institutions that are left as clients. Of course you need good enough hardware for that, but it's just a matter of time until such hardware becomes affordable to the masses.

[–] Aradino@hexbear.net 29 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You can run it on a mid range gaming PC just fine these days. Which is why he's terrified

[–] somename@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, people don’t really get the point of the massive data centers. While they do need a decent chunk of infrastructure to run their models for customers, a large amount of it is just for training, data processing and collection, and other R&D tasks.

The models themselves, once trained, are much more reasonable in terms of computation.

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

it also means that once the model has been trained to the point of diminishing return the data center just becomes a pollution factory that does nothing

which to be fair is what they already were but this also may be where we are

When the bubble pops (or at the very least when all that data center hardware gets obsolete) GPU and RAM prices gonna TANK. I'm not a fan of AI, but by that point, local-run models will be extremely cost-effective.

Only reason AI companies are even slightly competitive on price currently is because supply hasn't yet caught up to their mass cut-price purchases, plus the fact they're subsidising price still on huge losses.

There is a very high probability that the hardware companies will significantly reduce their production to keep the prices from falling.

I think it's a great shame that this guy still has blood in his body.

[–] meathappening@lemmy.ml 11 points 3 days ago

I agree. From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible for Sam Altman to have blood in his body.

[–] doubledealer@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

Reminder that Sam Altman's sister has accused him of sexual assault and abuse.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 38 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Altman and all the other tech bros wish they could control everything including water and food.

Ninja edit. The fuckers watch a movie like Total Recall and root for the bad guy because he's got the greatest job in the solar system.

Cohaagen: "Richter, do you know why I'm such a happy person?"

Richter: "No sir."

Cohaagen: "Because I've got the greatest job in the solar system. As long as the turbinium keeps flowing, I can do anything I want. Anything. In fact, the only thing I ever worry about is that one day, if the rebels win, it all might end. AND YOU'RE FUCKING MAKING IT HAPPEN!!! First you try to kill Quaid, and then you let him get away!"

[–] DoofusAscendant@hexbear.net 34 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The problem (well, a problem) is that the only thing these humanoid black holes want to do is make more money. MySpace Tom was the only normal one of the bunch and he's not in the news anymore because he took his bag and travels around taking photos and hanging out on beaches.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago

Their greatest dream is to be the first person to have 10 trillion dollars.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 33 points 4 days ago

I think it's quite terrible for humanity that Sam Altman still has a head.

[–] Wertheimer@hexbear.net 29 points 4 days ago (2 children)

” From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time," Altman said.

Communism is when you have to share your toothbrush

[–] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 23 points 4 days ago

Dude hogs all the RAM in the world, hoards it in warehouses and says we gotta be more efficient with it.

As an aside I want to [redact] (aka debate in the marketplace of ideas) every one of these tech influencers. They just sit there and let these lizard people say the most asinine shit with no accountability. And there is so many of them.

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 13 points 4 days ago

Who only uses 5% of their ram?? Shits expensive, I make sure I have enough tabs open to use it all

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago

It is "quite terrible" for Sam Altman to have air in his lungs when it could be in the atmosphere.

[–] darkcalling@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago

This guy is reinventing from first principles the whole utopian centralized society industrialists early last century imagined and advocated. Only back then they were thinking houses and such were inefficient and giant towers of porcelain with mass transit for all the workers to and from their factories was the obvious future for efficiency.

Funnily you'll never see a guy like this take this to its logical conclusion which is of course: destroy cars, destroy car infrastructure, build mass transit everywhere and build dense housing. Because that steps on the toes of other bourgeoisie including the big trans-atlantic financial ones.

[–] mr_sunburn@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago (4 children)

The humane thing to do is to send him to the bottom of the sea in the billionaire atomizing carbon fiber sub.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Unfortunately that sub sacrificed itself for the greater good

From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible for everyone to have kitchens and cookware, instead of eating at the staff canteen

From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible for individuals to have bedrooms. They should just rent 6-hour timeslots at the capsule hotel

From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible for people to own clothes that are only used once per week. subscribe to UndrWr for a low monthly fee, and get daily, pre-worn briefs to your doorstep (return them after 24 hours)

trains? ew. i don't want to share a vehicle with other people. every individual maneuvering their own giant steel death cage across countless kilometers of dedicated concrete infrastructure is the only way

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

We're going to have communes that are also somehow hyper individualistic and alienated from community.

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago

no first places, only second and third. and using the thirds cost most of the money you make from the second

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (5 children)

OK, the man makes a compelling point. I suggest we give him all of the ram...as in a battering ram...as in this battering ram...to the balls...repeatedly...forever

Data centers require water for cooling

Water contains oxygen

Therefore data centers need oxygen

Humans using oxygen means less oxygen for data centers

Data centers are inherently good

Therefore all of human existence is inherently evil

[–] bobs_guns@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Is it true that 80% of my job can be done with 20% of the RAM I have? Yes, absolutely. However, I also need to run Slack sometimes and do the other 20% of my job or I will not have a job for much longer. And I need 100% of the RAM to do 100% of the job, so Sammy-boy better learn to share a little, as I can't rent out the RAM to other people logged into my machine at this time with the level of zero days getting published before being patched these days. I wonder who caused that whole situation. Well, it is probably not that important.

[–] bobs_guns@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 3 days ago

Probably 100% of my job could be done with 4% of the RAM if apps were coded by hand like they used to do on the Commodore Amiga by the way.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 24 points 4 days ago

feeling the same way about Altman having oxygen
