Like come on, people are otraged about the most minor stuff, but somehoe can't be bothered to boycot or change the situation with convenience pricig, where same stuff you buy at a store is 10-20x the price per unit.

"Youre taking advantage of my tiredness, making me pay more of my hard-earned money for the privilege of being too tired to prepare my own food/drinks myself, essentially making me work more hours for having worked too many hours and being tired as a resilt of it. So: making me more tired for being tired already"

Why don't you boycott it and quit buying things that aren't worth the price? Seriously, people aren't outraged at this because convenience has value which means it costs.

The way to attack this problem is with robust antitrust enforcement. Where there are obscene markups there should be increased competition to provide the good/service which drives the price down. When that doesn't happen it's because something is stopping competition.

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 10 points 1 hour ago

People were outraged, when this was news years ago.

The frog has been boiled and has been dead for sone time.

I can't keep track of all the things I'm outraged about anymore. It's too much.

[–] Routhinator@startrek.website 5 points 1 hour ago

I don't get mad at shit like this, I just don't buy.

Rage gets you nothing from these pricing schemes. Letting the company go broke does.

I solved this problem, with regards to coffee, permanently for myself by getting a Timemore S3 and an Aeropress Go. All said that $200 CAD invested 5 years ago has save me hundreds in coffee bills, and now I can make a fresh cup at the campsite, road side, anywhere. All I need is hot water.

I don't think most people know enough about convenience pricing to be outraged about it.

The whole system of personalised pricing is designed to be unnoticeable to the general public or even make you think you're paying less.

On a sidenote I don't like the attitude of other commentators saying it's just for Starbucks so it doesn't matter to me, I make my coffee at home. Nothing is stoppin the system of convenience pricing to infect everything that isn't Starbucks and everyone needs to buy groceries.

[–] Darkonion@lemmy.world 1 points 35 minutes ago (1 children)

Is 'convenience pricing' like 'surge pricing' for car services? i.e. prices go way up at peak hours?

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 2 points 31 minutes ago

Even more diabolical, they're working on making pricing individualized to you based on how much they think you're willing to pay for a product using aggregate data

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

There's nothing outrage can do. You'll still buy from them since the rich own everything and you still have to eat. You can't outlast a billionaire just on hunger alone. Billionaires own the world. We're just (soon to be obsolete) chattle that lives in it to increase their profits.

[–] Quadhammer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

It actually does piss me off when I go to a place where I know the price of something and it's changed(increased). Like a gallon of store brand tea was 2.50 a couple weeks ago now the same tea is over 3.50. I'm not sure if it's from the smart tag or diesel prices.

A good form of protest I've decided is to leave a bunch of shit that was "too expensive" unchecked on the stand before the scanner

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Reason why the Europeans finally reacted and the AmeriKans continue to do nothing.

[–] ducktumn@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Man there is a technology out there that threatens %90 of peoples jobs, the literacy rate of both youth and adults, steals from artists and makes everything worse.

If people don't stand up against that they won't stand up for anything. Most people are just cattle at this point.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

If people don’t stand up

Stand up and do what? With whom? When and where is this happening? What are the anticipated consequences? What is the anticipated pushback? Who is leading the struggle? What are the demands?

I see a ton of "Somebody Should Do Something!" but vanishingly little "Join the DSA, rally around AOC, and unionize your workplace. Here's the steps. Here's the meeting. Here's the agenda. Here's people with resources and experience who can make it successful."

[–] cardboardboxfort@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

They are standing up against it but they still can't compete with Wall Street PE firms that see AI as another way to eliminate a certain percentage of that pesky human labor that costs so dang much to keep alive.

How exactly are we suppose to stop such greed when we aren't allowed to remove these elements from our economy? Voting doesn't fix it. Boycotting doesn't fix it. Its entrenched. History offers but one suggestion and the system is very anti-violence these days.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I don’t know what you include in convenience pricing but I probably don’t do it.

I am outraged over grocery/food delivery prices. My mom is mobility impaired so delivery is a lot more than merely a convenience, yet she can’t afford to spend huge amounts

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Define "convenience pricing".

Convenience has always come at a price. Your local corner shop will likely stock bread and milk, and it will be a lot more expensive than it is at the massive supermarket a mile or two away.

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 0 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

So.... The bread in supermarket is high in preservative chemicals, which is why it can stay 'fresh' for days. The one from a local bakery (boulangerie or pattisere or whatever) will have a shorter shelf life since they don't have a long supply chain to manage

There's not much evidence that the preservatives are bad or the supermarket bread is inferior, but I do miss the fresh smell and crack of the bread when I end up eating the (imo inferior) supermarket bread

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I'm not talking about a bakery. They're even more expensive, and even less convenient since most of them close just after lunch. I'm taking about a corner shop. Think Kwik-e-mart on The Simpsons. Apu sure as shit wasn't baking his own bread.

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 2 points 1 hour ago

Oh, I guess I'm lucky to have a corner shop with fresh bread, not just the same supermarket one

[–] Dreamcatcher@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

So… The bread in supermarket is high in preservative chemicals

This seems like an America thing.

Not the case here in Finland, for example.

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Most white bread sold in supermarkets is preservative full, even in Europe and Japan. It's required because the supply chain (from baking to on shelf) itself costs at least half a day or a full day depending on the setup.

A similar bread baked at home has a shelf life of 2-3 days before it is not fluffy soft anymore. This puts a big constraint as the feedback for the next batch is literally time critical. A longer shelf life enables bulk distribution per store which reduces logistics cost and improves per unit cost

[–] Dreamcatcher@lemmy.zip 1 points 10 minutes ago

I almost exclusively eat rye bread, just like the rest of this country.

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 3 points 4 hours ago

And it penalises vulnerable people eg spme disabled, elderly, people with kids etc.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

why aren't people outraged in general?

they're overwhelmed and discouraged because their outrage to previous things did nothing to solve the problem.

outrage is like gunpowder without a shell casing.

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago

I am not going to Starbucks, because fuck that corporate US shit. I am happily paying $10 to a local kebab place, because I earn about $15/h after taxes and insurance, and there is no way I am going to make a decent kebab with fries in under an hour, plus it helps some random Arab guy earn a living, so why shouldn't I?

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 0 points 4 hours ago

They’ve been trained that corporations can do whatever they want because it’s somehow a good thing.

[–] sic_semper_tyrannis@lemmy.today 3 points 14 hours ago

Because people want convenience over anything else. It's the largest hurdle when trying to get anyone to use any privacy respecting thing

[–] gastroglizzy@piefed.social 75 points 1 day ago (6 children)

I'm not outraged at Starbucks over convenience pricing because I haven't noticed it because I don't go to Starbucks.

I'm outraged because Starbucks is anti-union, anti-consumer, and donates money to an authoritarian regime.

[–] Bacano@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Maybe OPs was a bad example but I'll join you and OP in saying fuck starbucks

Society has been cowed on purpose. People dont even bat an eye when the US military kills a school full of young girls. You think they are going to do anything about surge pricing? 😆😅🤣 We are officially fucked as the lowest denominators of society drag us ALL to hell with them.

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 82 points 1 day ago (19 children)

making me pay more

No, you're choosing to pay more. Make your own coffee at home. Or hell, don't drink coffee. Nobody's making you do that, either.

A slightly better example might be convenience stores in low-income areas where many people don't have access to transportation to the more affordable grocery stores. The fact that you immediately jumped to Starbucks (something many people consider a treat of sorts) as something you're forced to buy out of convenience shows how privileged you are to have this "problem".

[–] bandanawearingbanana@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

So what when grocery stores do it? You grow your own potatoes too?

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 1 points 45 minutes ago

I'm not seeing the comparison here. There are grocery stores where you can get potatoes at a reasonable price, based on the costs involved in growing, shipping, and stocking said potatoes. No, I don't grow my own potatoes, I shop at those stores. The grocery stores that charge more for potatoes are generally the "high end" grocery stores (in my area, Whole Foods, Raleys, Sprouts, etc) and are not doing convenience pricing which is what is being discussed.

I'm not outraged because I never plan on paying for it. I love buying things in bulk in advance, preparing my own food, much cheaper.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

OP is conflating "convenience pricing" (where prices are adjusted through the day to match customer volume) vs the price of convenience.

And then using Starbucks as an example. Which is a terrible example. No one needsto go to Starbucks. We all need groceries.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

there was actually way back when it started. Initially it was like. For a cup of coffee?! People were like. Yeah but its real good coffee. See the thing is is that it was coming up during a good economic time and people had enough disposable income to treat themselves to a real good coffee before they started work and they figure if it helped them get through work well that is where all the pay for their food and lodging and everything came from. Again they had enough extra to say. Why not. I suspect we will see some big changes but who knows. I know many people that have stopped with fast food and even eating out is a rarity but somehow only wendys is going under.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 19 hours ago

People were like. Yeah but its real good coffee.

When was Starbucks ever "really good"?!? It's acceptable at best

[–] ApollosArrow@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

“Why aren’t people outraged about…” They are, is always the answer when this question is posed here.

[–] radix@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago (13 children)

Time is money.

It's not like expensive convenience has a monopoly. If you don't want to pay more, do it yourself.
