XCOM (most enjoyed Enemy Within, with Long War, other versions also generally good), just a masterpiece.

Into the Breach, probably the cleanest, and a great theme.

Lots of deck-ish based battlers: Slay the Spire (1 and 2), Backpack Hero, Monster Train

The Last Spell, Battle Brothers

Lots of D&D or adjacent stuff that board/tabletop-like: Balder's Gate 3, Gloomhaven/Frosthaven.

Edit: Wasteland series and Shadowrun series also great.

I generally prefer turn based, so no specific game

[–] fitgirl_fangirl@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 days ago (2 children)

What do you find engaging about it?

[–] Hudell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 41 points 6 days ago

There's no pressure to act fast

[–] lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago

I want to think about my moves. It's deeply rewarding to puzzle your way out of a pickle in FTL, just to make one small example

Baldur's Gate 3 and Expedition 33

First one is a great game, but combat is not the most important feature of the game IMHO.

The other is very good, and the combat is more relevant.

I think that the engagement is being able to build a strategy on how to win, instead of rely more on reaction.

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Expedition 33 was so good. The way they updated turn based combat really modernized it imo.

[–] creamfresh@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (6 children)

You mean the parrying which they borrowed from Super Mario RPG / Paper Mario?

Worms. Literally any Worms title.

Additionally: Transistor

Baldur's Gate 3.

I normally hate turn-based games with a passion, but they way they handled it is amazing. Combat is visceral, brutal, and rewards the player for spending time to think before they act. You can do some really crazy stuff if you think outside the ~~box~~ prism.

Chrono Trigger comes to mind

[–] Nemo@midwest.social 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Brogue, Hoplite, Stone Soup and other roguelikes

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Battle for Wesnoth

Heroes of Might and Magic

various card games

basically, any game with significant tactical depth can benefit from well-done turn-based timing

[–] morallysuperior@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 days ago

I came here to say Battle for Wesnoth. Something about the game has kept me hooked for like a decade

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Advance wars on the gameboy advance. When I was in the navy weΚ»d do the turn based 4 person mode with fog of war, and just hand it around the ship or when we were on leave.

Hogs of War

[–] fox@hexbear.net 10 points 6 days ago

X-Com Enemy Unknown & X-Com 2, Baldurs Gate 3, Expedition 33 are all wonderful turn-based games. I like games where I can set up and execute a plan of action.

[–] shadshack@piefed.world 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Baldur's Gate 3

Divinity: Original Sin 2

For the King 2

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I grew up playing the Final Fantasy series starting on the NES. I recently got FF7 remake on steam sale and have been putting time into that, but they did change it from turn based. I think at least FF1 - 11 are solid turn based games. Don't think I played any after 11

Advance Wars 1 and 2, absolute bangers

[–] ScriptSage@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 days ago

Turn based is almost exclusively what I enjoy. I don't need high octane action. I prefer to drink my coffee and solve the combat puzzle

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (4 children)

The original fallout had fantastic turn based combat, and some of the kill animations were superb

Hell yes. Final Fantasy 6. Fallout 1 & 2. Just a couple off the top of my head. This question is weird.

[–] Hazmatastic@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Very rarely. PokΓ©mon and Expedition 33 are the only ones that come to mind outside of more casual games like Super Auto Pets or Balatro

[–] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Does Balatro really fit into that genre? I'd consider it 95% rogue-like deck-builder.

Divinity Original Sin. Old 80s RPGs

[–] saigot@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

Lately I have been really enjoying mewgenics. Very deep game

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Masters of Orion 2

XCOM series and similar turn based tactical games like Xenonauts 2 and Phoenix Point (most recently Star Wars Zero Company)

Age of Wonders 3

City of Gangsters

Fights in Tight Spaces

Phantom Brigade

Jagged Alliance 1 through 3 (but not Back in Action)

Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall

[–] Mim@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 days ago

Shadowrun Hong Kong is great too.

Also, the 2018 Battletech game by the same developer.

[–] anas@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Right now, I guess PokΓ©mon counts?

I used to enjoy an Angry Birds spin-off called β€œEpic”, that was one of the better ones.

wizardry on the apple II

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 3 points 5 days ago

Divinity: Original Sin 2. Combat system isn't perfect (my main criticism is that you can unchain your characters to set your party members up in advantageous positions and then trigger combat, which feels cheaty) but it has some cool mechanics. A lot of elemental interactions, interactions with and creation of different surfaces, factoring in high ground for an advantage, etc. I know BG3 is highly acclaimed also by Larian but I haven't played it so can't attest to that combat system.

Yes, I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan and turn-based is what I started out with when I first started gaming. My favorite FF game (and video game of all time) is Final Fantasy X, and I remember playing late one night and falling asleep mid-boss battle. Waking up two hours later for the boss patiently waiting for me to kill it was quite nice, ngl.

Also Clair Obscur. I didn’t shut up about that game all last year. It’s just so good, especially for those who prioritize story in video games!

I generally enjoy turn based. I like casual stuff I can be interrupted while playing and not be fucked. All the way back to final fantasy.

But my favorite, bar none, is bg3. The immersion level is high for me, the overall gameplay is top end, and the whole d&d world ties the knot

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Transistor has an interesting real-time/turn based combat system. You move around in real time, the set your attacks and movement for the attack phase, then back to realtime controls again while the meter for your next turn charges up.

Not to mention the depth of weapon combinations you can put together; it's one of my favorite games. Might be time for another playthrough.

With the exception of MMOs, I very nearly play exclusively turn-based games.

The Xcom is the obvious answer, but also a big fan of the card games Slay the Spire/Monster Train. I've loved all of the older final fantasy games but found the action based newer ones like 15 grating.

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 days ago

Fire Emblem series is one of my fav turn based tactics games. Other ones I've really enjoyed are Advance Wars/Wargroove, XCOM, Shadowrun, Wasteland series.

[–] OrnluWolfjarl@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Heroes of might and magic 3 and 4. It's just fun to watch the animations, it's tense in big battles, and the battlefield is small enough to not let it take ages.

The modern X-COM games, South Park: Stick of Truth, Baldurs Gate 3, HoMM 3 and 5, Disciples 2, Dragon Age: Origins (its basically turn-based) and FTL in the same vein

[–] amelia@feddit.org 2 points 5 days ago

I usually don't like turn-based combat at all, but I still enjoyed Clair Obscur, simply because it's an amazing game otherwise. I found the battles to be a bit repetitive after a while, but it was still kinda fun.

[–] Ordoviz@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 days ago

Deltarune mixes traditional JRPG turn-based combat with bullet hell action, which is fun. I also like the rock-paper-scissors system from In Stars and Time and Omori, but encounters in those games tend to become repetitive quickly.

[–] KnightOfOldEmpire@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

X-COM. CRPGs. Pathfinder, BG. Have Ledgerbound and the new FF on the line. The last turn based was Zero Company.

Turn based, visual novels or some light hack and slash games are my usual poison.

[–] Mikina@programming.dev 3 points 5 days ago

I'm not usually a fan of turn based combat, but some games that stuck with me from the design point were Mechabellum (if that counts as turn based? It is a (really cool) autobattler), and Into The Breach.

Mechabellum is such a fun game to learn and figure out, and then you watch the battle unfold while thinking about the next steps.

Into The Breach because it tells you what will exactly happen, so it's more of a puzzle - you don't have to learn the enemy to know what they can do, and can just play it reactively. And that's a cool twist. Perspnally not a fan of gating strategy behing a wall of knowledge (i.e TCGs, or Pokemon - if you don't know the enemy cards/moves, you're basically playing blind).

[–] _spiffy@piefed.ca 5 points 6 days ago

For the king 2 has great turn based combat imo

[–] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

The first Fallout games. Turn based isometric top down RPG.

They were awesome stories and I spent hours finding as much backstory as I could. By reading and searching every location.

So I've only seen a couple hours of gameplay (watching a friend stream it). But Jeanne d'Arc seems pretty interesting. More of a tactical turn-based RPG.

I prefer it personally. I'm not a fan of games where combat is decided by reaction times and is high energy. I prefer to use proper preparation and strategy to win fights. And turn based is best for that. I'm also not a fan of "dice roll" style game mechanics for the same reason. Like Fallout New Vegas's speech system > Fallout 3's speech system. Because its based on a set skillcheck instead of a dice roll adjusted by your skill.

Slay the Spire 2. You start from being able to deal 6 damage per card and scale your way up to crazy numbers, each play gets you to choose different playstyles based on what cards you get and pick.
