A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.

The Poseidon Adventure.
Aniara. If you haven't seen it, it's so worth a watch.
Bladerunner 2049, can't believe that hasn't been mentioned yet.
Sunshine.
Lawrence of Arabia.
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Not a movie but The Sopranos is a good one.
🎶 Don't stop believin' 🎵
The ambiguity initially frustrated me. But then I thought about how generally annoying the entire family was and decided that I liked the idea that they all died.
Agreed. :)
Gladiator
Doctor Horrible Sing-along-blog
Rogue One
One of the best Star Wars movies
The best Star Wars movie 🤨
Not the main characters but:
- Lucky Number Slevin (IIRC)
- Don't look up
The Professional
The Last Castle, 2001, with Robert Redford preparing and executing a classical revolution in a military jail, and in the end he makes the enemy shoot him just because of a flag.
Excellent performance from Gandolfini as the warden
I know that I watched it, but don't remember details. But Gandolfini was always great on screen. Will have to revisit this one.
If you like Gandolfini, check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Loop and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_Angry_Men_(1997_film)
(These are not answers to the question in the main thread, just random suggestions lol)
Terminator 2
The original The Wicker Man is almost perfect in this regard.
Cabin in the Woods. Doesnt even matter who your favorite character is!
Harold and Maude.
James from 12 Monkeys.
Star Trek II, Spock dies at the end. Oh oops they resurrect him in Star Trek III. Hmm.
How about Thelma and Louise? IDK if there is a sequel.
Dr. Strangelove, the Slim Pickens scene at the end? No idea whether he got brought back either.
I won't dispute the heroism of the act, but does Spock count as the protagonist of an ensemble cast?
Donnie Darko and Hero are the only two movies I really like that I can think of where the main character dies at the end.
Arguably, Donnie dies at the beginning.
oooh. ooh. that makes me think about a movie where the protagonists parents die at the end by touching pure evil.
Time Bandits.
I saw that in the theater, at age seven.
My parents also took us to see Airplane! when it was released. No complaints. My parents were nuts, but we knew this.
Time Bandits!
Fallen
One of Denzel's best performances
Ooh, that's a good one.
Braveheart
Historically inaccurate or not, it's a fun movie
Man On Fire
Several films on my list have already been mentioned, so here's two that have been overlooked:
- Falling Down
- Gran Torino
Cool Hand Luke
30 Days of Night is the first one that comes to my mind.
Two things that come to mind are ones where it seemed that way. In the movie enemy mine about or maybe over an hour into it it seems like the protaganist dies and it was going to end on one heck of a gloomy note. Especially seeing it in theaters before cell phones when you did not know the exact time. Then also in the supernatural series at one point which I think was the season 1 finale it looks like everyone died. I was super hyped because I was thinking the show would follow a different group of hunters every season that bought it fighting the supernatural. Don't get me wrong the series was still good but it could have been so epic.
