On a side note, he's smart for letting a lot of people back out of Proton services. The VPN speeds are better now.😆

[–] Bluedragon012@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Canceled mine. Only did it for a month when Mulvad had their shit exposed. Lord. I feel for those who have to fully migrate.

[–] mousefad@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 6 hours ago

Slagging off his employees, slagging off his customers. Real bright spark this guy.

[–] Floon@lemmy.ml 19 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, I canceled my sub. I have no idea if the CEO of my new email provider is any better, but I know that Yen is abusive to his employees, and that matters to me. I know he's deep in the throes of AI psychosis, and that makes me not trust him at all. I'm gone.

[–] ShotDonkey@lemmy.world 11 points 6 hours ago

Posteo mail, excellwnt provider, good ethics https://posteo.de/en

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 9 points 6 hours ago

I'm so glad I delayed switching over to proton.

Also fuck that guy. What an ass.

[–] xemi@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

After an employee suggested taking at least a few days to pentest newly written code before pushing it live, Yen reportedly responded by calling the idea “bullshit and loser thinking,” saying it is possible to both be fast and secure.

This guy might just be hamming it up to fluff up his resume for Grok AI or something

What other email service is free and not a pos? Does one exist? Gotta pay to play I gues....

[–] Floon@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

No free service is good if you care about privacy.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Well unless i self host but im not doing that for email, no smarty enough

[–] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Many smarty enough people still find hosting service worth paying for.

If you grab a cheap domain, many domain registrars throw email hosting in for cheap or free.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

What exactly does that mean, just buying a domain name also gets you email ? And I can just use it through Thunderbird ?

[–] goatinspace@feddit.org 2 points 1 hour ago

When paying for a hosting it could include email service, but I've never used it. Probably better setting up your own email server or similar.

[–] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 18 points 9 hours ago

I feel like a good rule of thumb for Andy to say something, seemingly publicly or privately, is to just take a breath and then shut the fuck up instead. It seems like nothing he ever says brings comfort and confidence to his company's users.

[–] AlSweigart@lemmy.zip 42 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The original 404 Media article.

404 Media is a great publication with a strong track record. They are worth paying for.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

So true, they've really been rapidly climbing in my books over the last year especially. One of my favorite news sources rn. Would love recommendations for ones of similar quality outside tech, for any topics?

[–] dasrael@lemmy.zip 43 points 12 hours ago

When someone shows you who they really are, believe them the first time. And sadly, this is who Proton is right now, this guy. And this is who the Proton board is, people who support this guy and his vision.

This is proton. Shop accordingly.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

Bon jour Mailo...

The Suisse should boot Yen out of their country.

[–] mefisdo_dot_info@lemmy.ca 19 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

Too late Andy. You are not going to be part of the tech overlord aristocracy, no matter how much you simp now.

Maybe it's a good thing for you. May avoid the french doctor's invention that way.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 12 points 10 hours ago

Some people should just never hold any sort of power. Most people shouldn't, but some motherfuckers in particular.

[–] Keyboard@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

I put it off

[–] Wimster@lemmy.wtf 24 points 12 hours ago

This guy sounds like a Mini Musk and I hate Musk.

I highly suggest Thundermail (tb.pro) if you wanna switch to a libre email provider. Mozilla hosts stalwart and their own libre mail client for you, along with providing 15 mail aliases and 3 custom domains, for a small price. I have been using it as my daily since past few months. I haven't found any bugs despite it being in beta.

[–] 3laws@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (2 children)

Given Mozilla's AI stance I can't see it as an improvement. I never want to side with NOT-Mozilla but the way they handled the Firefox AI stuff was messy at the bare minimum.

As a direct Proton Mail replacement I'm migrating to tuta.com. Which funnily enough just got a Thunderbird add-on recently.

[–] lightsblinken@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

messy, but at least handled?

[–] xistera@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Which funnily enough just got a Thunderbird add-on recently.

I saw this earlier and got excited, just to find out it was just a browser tab inside of thunderbird.

[–] 3laws@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

It is but it also means they are actually doing stuff for their users, I want to see et grow into something more thorough in the future, for now it's progress.

Everyone go vote at their feedback website. There are several posts in the General Suggestions section that suggest Andy Yen step down. Mark them as critical.

He's literally why I never signed up with Proton. Bullett dodged.

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 13 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Same, and a got a lot of downvote for saying I didn't trust them. Custom domain + 1Tb nextcloud is my jam and really not that expensive.

It's a bit surprising how many CEO's express disdain for their users and employees.

When employees are reduced to an "input resource" number on a spreadsheet, and they sit insulated from user complaints, and likely surround themselves with sycophants, I suppose it's inevitable.

Power corrupts, you can see it all around us once you start looking.

Power corrupts, you can see it all around us once you start looking.

Yes, but also the corporate world has a nasty tendency to promote psychopaths to CEO positions because they think a lack of humility is the same as competence.

Never used them because their software wasn't open source, and thus meant I would be unable to switch to another provider. Seems I made the right choice.

[–] stateofaffairs@lemmy.today 33 points 15 hours ago (6 children)

I am, once again, offering to take over as CEO of Proton.

My work focuses on nonprofit-stakeholder-government relations. Specifically how organizations mediate between state agencies and stakeholders. No agenda beyond aligning mission, vision, and values, and keeping it that way.

Reach out if you prefer that to help guide Proton somewhere other than the trash bin of distrust.
