I started seeing a weird trend on Lemmy that I cannot understand.

Weeks ago, posts used to have downvotes and upvotes in the semi-rational range you would expect.

Out of nowhere, it seems like almost all the posts I see now have zero downvotes with some exceptions.

What is happening here exactly?

We’re all just feeling very upbeat and supportive lately

Better comments and posts as the kids are busy going back-to-school?

A few weeks ago my app (Jerboa) got updated or reset or whatever and I actively had to turn them back on in my settings.

Not sure about Lemmy but I see them pretty clearly. Our culture isn't downvote heavy I think.

We are just that positive.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I mean personally I rarely downvote. Im not quite more likely to block than downvote but I think they are close in terms of how often the action is taken. Then again I don't upvote often although it is the more likely thing that I might do. The most common thing I do is just comment.

This is the way. 🙇🏼‍♂️🤘🏼

For mental health reasons I've set my client to display the vote total, rather than independent up and down votes.

[–] Vanth@reddthat.com 9 points 4 months ago

Good choice. I picked an instance with downvotes disabled. Can't give 'em, can't see 'em. Every post has 1+ up and 0 down from my view.

I much prefer forums with upvote only and report for posts that break community rules.

Possible reason:
Those that downvoted everything they find uninteresting when checking All have realized voting isn't anonymous and stopped or been banned from the comms they mass downvote by a moderator who check who it is that downvotes all posts.

Or they figured out that downvoting stuff does not produce the desired result of telling the "algorithm," which we don't have around here, that they're not interested in that type of content in their feed.

I get a smattering of 2 or 3 downvotes on all of my posts from completely random users who I therefore have to assume have no agenda other than not being interested in silly knives. That's fine and all, but it's also not how it works on Lemmy.

[–] anamethatisnt@sopuli.xyz 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I mean when systemic downvoting brings you a community ban then it kinda works like the algorithm. ;)

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Edit: Oh, and also. Banning a user from a community does not appear affect that community's visibility to that user, i.e. they can still see it. They just can't participate in it. I am banned from a smattering of communities either due to my own chutzpah (one of them is clearly a troll sub, you probably know the one) and a few at dubvee.org (presumably because someone there thought I pissed in their cornflakes at some point, though search me as to why or how since I never went there) and I can still see all of the content in those places.

It does prevent them from downvoting anything in it, though. At least it should if the world still makes any sense.

Oh hey, you’re the knife guy. Even though I’m not a knife nerd myself, I always enjoy the reads. 🙂

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

A few weeks ago people got reminded that votes aren't private, so a few people have probably stopped downvoting stuff as much.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I’ve enjoyed using lemvotes; I find it pretty funny that lemmy.ml has the shadow instance the tool uses blocked

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 2 points 4 months ago

It's not a shadow instance :D

(See the instance I'm replying to you from)

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Your admin probably turn off downvoting.

[–] Pro@programming.dev 5 points 4 months ago

Nope, I believe . Dev still have downvotes as normal.

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 5 points 4 months ago

At the moment its 26 up/16 down for the post.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 4 points 4 months ago

Don’t bother wondering why. Just be glad.

[–] Crazyslinkz@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Lol, they came here, you are at 70% rn.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

There should be one of those internet laws for downvotes because the minute you mention or complain about them you just invite more

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I down voted your comment to prove your point.

I'm helping!

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Down to Hell.

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

hehehe I am downvoting as an act of tomfoolery >:)
