I'd be a lot more worried about being sent to an El Salvador prison without cause, not just being denied entry

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

as always, being denied entry is the best outcome, and workers who decide to deny people entry should honestly be celebrated for potentially saving lives.

Yeah they are a delicate bunch people aren't they.

Americans hate free speech.

[–] ninjabard@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

RepubliKKKans hate free speech.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, nah, I’m not gonna split hairs.

I think it's fascinating that you can really define their style of free speech as freedom to discriminate while pretty much the rest of the world treats free speech as freedom from discrimination.

Did you somehow miss the last decade?

[–] PointyReality@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

I think everyone should avoid visiting the US.

Officials may ask to inspect your electronic devices, emails, text messages or social media accounts. If you refuse, they can deny your entry

Let's remember that this has been the case for years for anyone entering Australia too.

Denied entry isn't a big deal. Being detained for weeks/months for criticizing the orange mobster would be.

Price of air ticket from Australia and another 24 hours in flight are a big deal too. Not to mention contractual obligations to perform.

In Australia they can clone your phone and hold the data indefinitely

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago

Yeah but no one gets guantanamoed for calling the PM a cunt

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, but the data isn't being used to silence criticism, like in the USA. However, that just goes to show how important privacy laws are in principle, not just based on who's in power. Who's in power changes.

[–] Whirlybird@aussie.zone -5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There's no actual evidence to suggest it's being used to silence criticism in the USA either though. This woman didn't go to the USA. She didn't get denied entry.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There is lots of anecdotal evidence of people who have been critical of trumps on social media being denied entry, including high profile cases.

[–] Whirlybird@aussie.zone -4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Anecdotal means nothing. Most are just like this, fear mongering where it didn’t actually happen.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You're missing the point. This anecdotal evidence is where it did happen and is verified by the media It's painting a patter of vis refusal for online criticism of Trump.

[–] Whirlybird@aussie.zone -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The article in this topic? She never went to America! Some random unnamed lawyer said she could maybe possibly run into some trouble lol.

She didn’t get denied entry, sent back, or thrown in the gulag.

Lots of missing info in that story. You can’t just carry someone’s ashes into the USA. It doesn’t sound like he went through the correct processes to do that, which is a huge biological hazard risk and that alone would be enough to deny entry.

That reminds me, has anyone seen Kathy Griffin recently?

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world -1 points 2 weeks ago

That'll show em
