The important bit:

the pets escaped through a dog door and were not harmed

[–] don@lemmy.ca 53 points 2 weeks ago

Excellent work, carry on.

I came for this. No interest in the article but wanted to know the dog was ok.

[–] JandroDelSol@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

thank goodness!

Yeah, that’s not very typical. I’d like to make that point.

Well, there are a lot of these dogs chewing things around the world all the time, and very seldom does anything like this happen. I just don’t want people thinking that pets aren’t safe.

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

My only thought was that the pet owners are idiots

[–] SenatorCollins@aussie.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago

Well, I was thinking more about the other ones.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

My cat exclusively choose USB cables, other cables are not tasty apparently. Is difficult to plan for everything.

[–] SenatorCollins@aussie.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago

Well, some of them are built so that they aren’t chewed on at all.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Cable plastics are derived from soy. They are designed to break down in landfills but the side effect is cat pasta.

[–] SenatorCollins@aussie.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago

Oh, very rigorous accessory engineering standards.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

But maybe lithium batteries aren't safe...

[–] boobs_@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a reference to a famous funny video. Even the guys username is from it

[–] SenatorCollins@aussie.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Absolutely ludicrous, these are very very strong batteries.

[–] Muaddib@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Senator Collins, can you tell me about your government's tax plan?

[–] SenatorCollins@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

It’s a complete void.

[–] SenatorCollins@aussie.zone 9 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Well, there are regulations governing the materials they can be made of.

No paper. No string. No sellotape.

Would like to see "dog chews don't cause it to catch fire" to the regulations requirements

It was outside of the environment

[–] SenatorCollins@aussie.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago

It’s beyond the environment. It’s not in an environment. It’s been thrown beyond the environment.

coulda sworn I'd seen this before

[–] 0ops@piefed.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago

Same, honestly I'm surprised that it wasn't older than that. Hell of a year amirite?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The dog has been arrested for arson.

Is there a mirror to this video?

keep portable charging devices out of pets' reach

Realistically, I suspect that a smartphone battery is enough to start a fire. I doubt that there is any chance that every dog owner is going to keep smartphones out of pet reach.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Dogs have been chewing cords, starting fires, and electrocuting themselves since home electricity was a thing.

[–] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

When my dog, Fester, was a puppy, he was chewing power cords and I am still surprised and grateful he never harmed himself in the process, at least not that warranted care.

He's more constrained to his own toys and chewables now, but for a while nothing was safe. He has the epithet Fester The Destroyer for having chewed through over $1K of shoes in a week. His grand total it significantly higher.

Alexandrite doesn't allow image downloading so ~~I don't know how to provide pet tax.~~

Here we go. Jackie on the right; Fester (The Destroyer) on the left.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

For cords, IIRC you can make them taste bad.

hits Amazon

Maybe it'd be possible to make something similar for phone cases.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, how else are they going to play flappy bird?

[–] J92@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Apparently mice used to do this with old matches, before the invention of safety matches.

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 5 points 2 weeks ago

Look we have become man

[–] Bot@sub.community 3 points 1 week ago

Dog: dare you to go out without me, you motherfucker

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 1 week ago

Can we train dogs to do this to fascists?

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

This is why I don't think the plastic portable power Bank things shouldn't exist.

Mine is made of metal. I also don't have a dog, and I don't leave my power Bank where a dog would find it. So I'm triple safe? I suppose.

[–] Woht24@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Plastic and metal aren't going to do much difference when you're talking that thin. The problem lies in piercing any lithium battery - I'm sure you can imagine dropping your power bank, electrical vehicle crashes, accidentally stepping on your phone etc. They can all lead to the battery going off

Mine was made of metal. It caught fire when I tried to open it to replace the battery.

They need to make those things easier to open to service..

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You'll get no argument from me.

When mine stops holding a charge, I plan on opening it up, finding new, equivalent cells, and building a new case for it around battery holders for the cells. I'm 98% certain I have cylindrical cells in mine.... So some 18650 or 21700 cell holders, cells, and just wire it in to the same controller board and slap everything in a case with some padding to keep it from moving around.

That way I can keep using it until the controller board dies, and even then, I can later replace the controller board....

It's my long-term plan to build and maintain my own power bank.

It will be encased in metal.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That was my plan before opening it caused a fire.

[–] MystikIncarnate@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Fair enough. Hopefully I have better luck.

Take care of yourself and be safe out there.
