US Vice President JD Vance has called on European states to show greater independence, urging them not to be US "vassals." He also said EU governments could have done more to oppose Washington over the Iraq War.

This seems like an attempt to undermine NATO. The only time article 5 has been used was after 9/11.

~~By saying Europe had a choice and should have resisted, he lays the foundation for the US to not follow through on their NATO commitments.~~

Edit: The commenter below is right, the article 5 was used for Afghanistan, not Iraq. My whole argument is thus invalid

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 62 points 1 week ago (6 children)

Article five wasn't used in Iraq, only Afghanistan.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's not like that matters to the people this propaganda is targeting.

Yeah, we should have ended our ties to the US and our infrastructural dependency back then.

Back then was one of the few moments I was proud about a german politician, when Schröder said "No".

[–] superkret@feddit.org 24 points 1 week ago

Too bad he's saying "Да" a lot now.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 73 points 1 week ago (2 children)

…what…?

Seriously: what the fuck? There was - at best - scant official support in Europe for the war, and public support was nearly nonexistent. The fuck is he on about.

Go home and fuck your loveseat, heterosectional.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 20 points 1 week ago (6 children)

A few European countries sent troops, but more importantly there was not a peep from Europe about, you know, not creating another refugee crisis in their backyard. He said oppose, not not support. Europe could've done more to oppose the Iraq war.

I remember when Republicans renamed french fries to freedom fries because France opposed the Iraq War

So, is he seriously telling other countries not to just blindly go along with whatever the US tells them to do, but instead to resist and stand up for themselves?

And Trump is ok with this messaging? Hmmm.

So now he is saying dont fall in line and please retaliate to our bs?

So he does have a humiliation kink?

[–] InversionOfControl@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

I genuinely believe these people are too stupid for this to apply. There is no irony, shame, or humiliation. These cunts are a void of greed.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 43 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh yeah, that time the USA kept lying about weapons of mass destruction found there and Washington not liking being called out by almost everyone.

[–] jaemo@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 week ago

"I don't know why you keep going on about our current lies, you assholes should have kept called us out for our past lies. But only now, not back then when we were lying with those lies. What I mean is.... ok: see we lied in the past, but you definitely were jerks for not believing those then. Now; I know we renamed French fries to freedom fries in a frothing defense of our "good lies" back then, and I know back then we insisted it was the truth, but now they were bad lies and HAVE YOU EVEN THANKED ME YET FOR TALKING TO YOU ABOUT THIS!?"

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 40 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Why didn't you stop me from hurting those people? This is all your fault!

Fucking eyelined moron

Shady Vance is now being told to do revisionist history. I'm excited to hear what he's told to say next.

[–] Initiateofthevoid@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Easily the most underrated moment of the election was when the sofa-king Shady Vance said that the US has the "cleanest energy economy in the world." On stage! On television!

That's not even revisionist, it's just straight double think. Decades of holding the nation back in an outdated dirty energy economy, from Reagan ripping solar panels off the white house roof to Trump ripping EV chargers out of federal parking lots.

Decades of fighting any and all clean energy initiatives and they just... pretend it never happened. Gaslit the country into thinking that we already accomplished all of the progress that they personally prevented. The progress that we still desperately need to this day.

[–] TON618@lemmy.world 31 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

Vance saying Europe should've done more to stop his nation from going to war has a high levels of rapist blaming victim for their acts energy.

I was young back then so my memory of the details as i've experienced them are somewhat blurred, but there definitely was opposition. And that was met with statements along the lines of "if you're not with us you're against us/part of the problem".

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (3 children)

For a while a disturbing number of places in America were calling French fries "freedom fries" because France didn't want to invade Afghanistan with us. From my recollection, most of Europe was against it and the UK was the biggest backer of the invasion. I was in high school at the time so I could be wrong.

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Close. French fries were renamed because France refused to join the Iraq war, stating they looked at the intelligence and didn’t see evidence of WMDs. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said that this was “Old Europe” talking and that the Eastern European countries were more willing to join the war.

The Russia tactics again, I see. Do terrible war crime, blame others for not stopping you.

What a bunch of clowns.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 30 points 1 week ago

The one you started, and spread fake bullshit about WMDs to get European countries on board?

That war?

Fuck off you pudgy little fake working-class beard eyeliner cunt.

[–] KraeuterRoy@feddit.org 28 points 1 week ago (5 children)

What exactly could Europe have done to stop the Bush administration from invading Iraq on the completely unfounded pretense that Saddam Hussein had WMD's?

Bake a cake with 'Please don't!' Written on it?

But it's a useful reminder from the couch fucker. Should Trump call for aid when attempting to overthrow Canada/Greenland/Panama/Iran the Europeans better say 'No'. I bet that's totally not gonna let Republicans lose their shit and cry, bitch and moan like there's no tomorrow.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 8 points 1 week ago

What exactly could Europe have done to stop the Bush administration from invading Iraq on the completely unfounded pretense that Saddam Hussein had WMD's?

Threaten to stop buying US weapons? Dump US bonds? Impose sanctions? At the very least not send troops? Europe wasn't vassalized enough by America that they couldn't do anything but watch as America created the refugee crisis of the century in their backyard (which, I should say, is still blowing up in their faces).

I remember the lead up. There was a lot of action against it. But the US was clamoring really fucking hard for the war since the neo-cons wanted to invade Iraq well before 9/11.

Fuck you, JD.

Why the fuck is VP Bowman ranting about the war his ol' bush started? Is he trying to fuck the memory of what happened, like the couch no one wants to use in the oval office?

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

So when the US starts a war with Canada and Denmark to avoid free elections in 2 years, Europe should step in and JD will make sure the US backs down?

OK.

JD should have done more to self abort while he was still a fetus.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I second this

[–] TTom0602@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

Well, he's about 20 years too late for such criticism, and if he had been around to say that, his party would have called him a terrorist sympathizer. He probably would be put on a "no-fly list. "

[–] Pringles@lemm.ee 14 points 1 week ago

Are they going to rename the freedom fries to vassal fries now?

The cognitive dissonance of this guy is unbelievable.

[–] Hayduke@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

To be fair to the EU, republicans could have done more before it even arrived at the feet of the EU

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

“Krasnov pawn works harder to destabilize the west”

[–] Ghost_Pepper@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Agreed. Europe should have also done more to stop two world wars.
