Summary

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Donald Trump must stop making “disrespectful” remarks about Canada before serious bilateral talks can begin.

Trump has threatened tariffs on Canadian imports and joked about making Canada the 51st U.S. state. Carney, sworn in last Friday, has yet to speak with Trump but insists Canada is ready for broader negotiations on trade and security.

Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs but acknowledges limits due to its smaller economy.

Carney’s comments mark his strongest stance on Trump since taking office.

Trump literally doesn't have the ability to shut the fuck up so not sure this is a real option.

I'm gonna need to hear a good ol Canadian "Sorry" from a US president before I ever knowingly buy anything from that country again. And that's all it would take too.

Canadians all know this. Presumably Carney knows this. Effectively he's ruled out wasting his time on a negotiation where their main ask is deep, deep fucking behind our red line.

They're not jokes or disrespectful remarks, Trump clearly stated he would wage an economic war to make Canada join the USA.

joked...

It's all "joked" until somebody fires the first shot. (They might even be civilians on opposite sided of the border...)

Chump is "joking" up until he isn't.

Stand strong Carney. You've shown promise so far, don't let up.

From a US'ian.

“Joked?!” Fuck off. He threatened military action. Fuck him.

Carney, it’s gonna be a long 4 year wait.
