Advocates call for removal of machines and demand that company speak out against ICE raids in parking lots

A Home Depot in Los Angeles installed three high pitch noise-emitting machines outside to deter day laborers from seeking work there, causing them to suffer headaches and nausea, advocates alleged at a press conference on Wednesday.

The Instituto de Educacion Popular del Sur de California (IDEPSCA), an advocacy organization that helps day laborers, called for the removal of these machines from Home Depot's Cypress Park location, according to the Los Angeles Times

Advocates for day laborers also demanded that Home Depot speak out against ICE raids in store parking lots. Immigration enforcement agents have repeatedly targeted the Cypress Park location, which is located near one of IDEPSCA's support hubs, the Times reported.

The fuck??? Why would home depot discoursge this??? Get a bunch of day laborers outside, who aren't affiliated with your company, and it's only GOOD news for your profits.

Consider this. A new home owner wants to refurbish their kitchen. So the guy goes down to home depot to get some materials. But he also knows there's some day laborers outside.

So now he's bought the materials from you, hired the labor from guys hanging around outside your store, and no matter what happens next, you made a sale because you're known for having day laborers outside.

Plus, even if they do a shitty job, the home owner has no recoarse against you. He can't sue YOU for shoddy worksmanship. You never hired these guys. All you did was sell the materials, and the materials are fine. It's the installation that was subpar.

And plus, it's not like home depot sells a seperate service of installation anyways. So they don't lose money, they gain sales, and have no legal obligation, and benefit from having an installation team that you don't pay, and aren't legally responsible for in any way.

Because the CEO of Home Depot is a MAGA dumbass... that is all. The green light to be a racist prick has been voted in to the most powerful position in the world. Dumbest timeline since the 1930s.

This is literally the way it's worked for years. Except now we have a Nazi racist government

There's an even more fundamental flaw to this plan: who wants to go shop somewhere that has a fucking LRAD blasting people on the way in? Even if I was the type of idiot that shopped at home depot instead of any other big box home improvement store, I would immediately go to a competitor that didn't actively irritate their customers for no reason.

Yes I cannot fathom how they can do this without also assaulting customers. Not that that’s the main thing wrong with it. It’s just a case of people seeing other people and sneering “those fucking people - look, they’re existing again!”

I go to a store that's weaponised its carpark, i very very quickly leave without entering

[–] boobs_@lemmy.world 23 points 5 days ago

But what about the part where all day laborers are illegal immigrants and immigrants are icky or something and turn their apparently most important audience away: racists

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago

You don’t get it, do you? Everything you said makes perfect sense, that’s why they hate it.

Home Depot does sell installation services. I'm sure the prices are astronomical vs. a day laborer.

You have to evaluate it emotionally not factually.

I've seen this article reposted in a couple of places, and only after your comment I connected the dots of why there are people collecting outside Home Depot. A pretty interesting symbiotic relationship that all parties benefit from. Why HD uses psychoacoustic weaponry against laborers is still irrational and infuriating.

Wait. Isn't it good for their business to have day laborers there? Wtr

Imagine if a private citizen tried to pull this stunt.

So assault?

In case anyone is wondering, Home Depot is claiming this is meant to deter overnight parking. This is something that has precedent elsewhere, but the timing of the installation with the recent ice raids is very interesting.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 43 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Home Depot says it is to deter overnight parking.

Is affecting day laborers.

Yeah, I think Home Depot might be lying.

Some Home Depot’s in the LA area have mobile offices set up where you can coordinate with a guy to get the right people for the job. Not sure if this is still around now?
