Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

I hope the rest of the civilised countries boycott it. Well done, Poland!

International sport has totally sold out to dictators. Putins Russia is allowed to compete and push their propaganda. The world cup 26 in the USA will be a shit show and Trump propaganda. The Tour de France is dominated by team "UAE", the country literally sponsoring a genocide in Sudan. PSG is financed by Qatar. It's not fun anymore.

Things will not change as long as people keep watching this stuff.

Unfortunately gentlemen we are obviously in a spin off multiverse that implodes.

We chose the wrong decisions at some point to end up in this timeline.

Just grab some popcorn, it will all be over soon.

I kinda wanna bookmark this post and link it every time Trump does something horrible and Lemmy suddenly rediscovers the nuanced difference between the people and their government.

ensure that weightlifting continues to be a platform of inclusion, respect and solidarity

I'm sorry, but there should be no respect or solidarity for someone that kills other people. And don't sell me the bullshit that a citizen is not the same thing as their government. That's irresponsible. When we Italians got fed up of Mussolini we revolted, fought and killed him. If your government goes too far it's your responsibility as a citizen to stop it (via democracy or via rebellion if there is no other way)

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

TBF, the Italians only killed Mussolini after his regime had been militarily defeated. Twice.

[–] amol@piefed.social 1 points 11 hours ago

It's more complex than that. Chronologically it's true that he died after having already military lost most of Africa and Italy itself, but the part of the military had already rebelled in 1943 and Italians faithful to the king started organizing. The fact that he had lost part of the military could have surely influenced the subsequent losses. Anyway the citizens started working to undermine his power and position since early 1943.

Including Russia is exactly the opposite of “inclusion, respect and solidarity”.

The EWF said that it believes “sport must remain above politics” and that it “does not accept discrimination based on political or geopolitical circumstances, especially at a time when such tensions are on the rise across the world”.

It’s not simple geopolitics anymore when a country is invading another country. Especially with Russia’s significant state involvement with sport and weightlifting in particular.

I think Israel should probably be in the list too but let’s not get into whataboutism and respect the stand they took as it is. Poland does have enough problems with antisemitism as it is, no need to give the international community fuel.

[–] freeman@sh.itjust.works 10 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Let's do get in "whataboutism" aka consistency aka non hypocrisy. What about the USA now with Venezuela or if they invade Greenland? During their decade long occupation of Iraq?

What is your excuse for that? The US is also the next biggest offender in Olympics doping after Russia.

[–] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The USA isn’t part of the EWF. The E stands for European

[–] freeman@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Is invading a country only an issue at European competitions? Not the Olympics?

[–] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

Did you read the article?

The issue is that Poland said they were not going to grant visas for Russian athletes to the competition.

Just checked, and the Olympics are not being held in Poland, so Poland can’t deny a visa for American athletes attending the olympics. That would be Italy.

[–] freeman@sh.itjust.works 0 points 6 hours ago

I am amused by you playing dumb to avoid answering the question. It's not about a specific event.

Do you think Italy (hosts) or IOC (organizers) should deny participation to US athletes due to USA's invasion of Venezuela? Do you think China back in 2008 (or again the IOC) should have refused USA's athletes due to the USA's occupation of Iraq?

If not why not?

“They’re slaughtering women and children.” “Don’t bring politics into this.”

Based Poland
