When you say things like “state controlled media” you need to clarify if you’re referring to Iran or the US.

[–] Aqarius@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I remember once seeing the BBC referred to as "UK state media" and boy were people angry

[–] greyfrog@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 hours ago

Huh? No one is angry about that. It is state media. But it's independent even if the Tories did try and make it less so.

The issue is that most people associate "state media" with it being controlled by the state.

Oh come on that's not fair.... Ellison who now owns CNN, CBS, TimeWarner HBO... Whelp nvm.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 14 points 16 hours ago

The US has too many of them to use a generic description like that.

There are literal street parties that have broken out in my city. It's mostly Iranian flags, but there's a few US and Israeli flags in the crowd. They are all friends tonight.

Yeah! Sadly Lemmy users are downvoting Iranians being happy, for them this is a sign that America did something right which is wrong and can't be allowed to be seen

Iranian government killed thousands last month

[–] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 5 points 10 hours ago

TENs of thousands

Tankies are out in force, most other people don't seem to care.

Also, how are Trump, Starmer, and others still trying to make this about nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons are state insurance. Their only use is to prevent a foreign power from using force to destroy or control a state. Kind of like what Trump is doing to Iran right now. This latest foreign intervention will only encourage whoever takes over to develop nuclear weapons faster, to avoid exactly this scenario in the future.

[–] El_guapazo@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago (4 children)

This never would have happened if Iran had nuclear weapons

[–] napkin2020@sh.itjust.works 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Which is nice given that even without nukes they showed that they're more than happy to kill thousands of protesters and, well, generally make everyone's life miserable.

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 1 points 10 hours ago

This is a dumb take, this happened in part because Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons. Not just giving the US and Israel a casus belli but also the amount of resources pumped into the program was a major contributor to the economic issues behind the protests.

They shoulda gotten them a long time ago. And Ukraine shouldn't have given up theirs when the US pressured them to.

[–] Triasha@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Ukraine had physical possession of nukes but no ability to use them. The Russians never let them have the launch codes.

Ukrainian officials knew they weren't getting anything worthwhile in the Budapest memorandum because they weren't giving anything up besides a headache.

South Africa gave up their nukes and decommissioned their nuclear program. Ukraine just formalized what was already true, the nukes were not usable for them.

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It's a good thing they don't have nuclear weapons then yeah?

[–] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago

Are yo saying it's good they don't have because that way US could attack or because they didn't use them to retaliate?

I understand you mean the former.

[–] etuomaala@sopuli.xyz 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Donald Trump tells the truth. I didn't think he had it in him.

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

I was so doubtful when he said it before Iran confirmed it.
