I don't know why anyone expected the UAE to stay safe

[–] ugandan_airways@lemmy.zip 1 points 20 minutes ago

I agree. I spent some time in the UAE and never felt safe because of the existential threat of future violence. It was always lingering in the background. Knowing the west’s relationship with the Middle East, I don’t understand how anyone could feel any other way.

You're in the Middle East where war has raged for thousands of years yet you somehow develop an ~~illusion~~ delusion of safety?

[–] hark@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Do you think the entire middle east is just warlords fighting over dunes of sand?

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 1 points 59 minutes ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure they have been fighting for thousands of years no matter what they call themselves.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 1 points 49 minutes ago

Then you'd be pretty wrong. Don't fall for the propaganda, the entire middle east cannot be written off as a perpetually war-torn shithole.

Dubai is a particularly rotten world, built and maintained by slaves on the background.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 40 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The Dubai authorities are clamping down on any mention of the war.

[–] Cherry@piefed.social 21 points 1 day ago

It’s not war…it’s more. Yes more, it’s just a new feature. Power fireworks for your Uber enjoyment.

Yeah, just read up on the Dubai Porta Potty to learn about how influencers work there

[–] etherphon@piefed.world 55 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Is there anything more pathetic than an influencer? I'm not sure.

[–] kittykillinit@lemy.lol 5 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

The people giving them attention.

[–] etherphon@piefed.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Mmm true enough, I just wonder what it is that draws one to an influencer. Is it like a mentorship? Do they respect these persons opinions so much even though they really have no idea who they are? I don't understand the dynamic.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Being an influencer in Dubai and pretending the things you get paid to do on camera is what gets uploaded to social media...

[–] Zier@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We need to call 'influencers' what they really are, a salesperson.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 3 points 15 hours ago

Salespeople identify themselves as such. Influencers are shills.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

Influencer faking to be a socialite?

[–] wetsoggybread@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago

Whump whump your lives built on the back of slave labor and oil barony are at risk

Imagine being a douchebag and only a douchebag such that you have to become proud of being a douchebag because there is nothing else there to offer. Really incredible.

Just wait until a few Iranian drones find their way into the US. Donald will love it, as historically, any attack on America has translated into Americans begging for authoritarians to become more authoritarian.

I'm betting they'll get snuggled into and launched from Alberta. That way trump gets an excuse to invade Canada at the same time.

[–] xenomor@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

This brings me so much joy.
