Not the wealthy beach suburbs!

Fat bikes is just the wheel size. These are high powered e-moto bikes.

e: The Surly Ice Cream Truck has fat tyres and no motor. It's designed to be ridden on sand and snow.

On my way to work today two of these passed me, I was doing 40 in the city and they zipped by at 55-60 by my estimate. There was a passenger on the back of one, none of them were wearing helmets, and they were weaving in and out of traffic closely enough to touch each car. There was a red light up ahead so they just turned straight into the flow of traffic at a higher speed than I'd do in a car and kept going. I'm not at all surprised hospitals are seeing a lot of people from incidents involving these.

Usually it's just a couple of kids driving through the parking lot and screaming at the top of their lungs every 15 minutes all weekend, and yeah that's annoying but at least they aren't as likely to get someone killed.

Teens be teens, I guess? Also, aren't those commonly known as methbikes?

No no, the article clearly states that locals are INFURIATED, all of them. There's no mild annoyance or irritation, it's fury or nothing these days I'm afraid, that's just how it is.

For some reason I'm picturing Sydney Mecham, only that it's actually IN Sydney

I'm not sure why the BBC would be interviewing people in Sydney about kids riding powered bikes. Is that really world news?

Fat bikes are the RAM trucks of the bike world.

And there's a pitbull nearby or maybe riding it.

How are these any worse than the MAMILs?

[–] dgriffith@aussie.zone 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

How are these any worse than the MAMILs?

Let's see, they are:

  • Generally faster and more unpredictable.

  • Heavier, compared to MAMILs endless quest to have the lightest rig possible to get that PB time to work. So when they hit a pedestrian, they hit hard.

  • Driven by kids without a fully formed concept of risk and consequence.

  • Not wearing hi-vis lycra and safety gear.

So overall, I'd prefer middle aged men in lycra.

The Lycra idiots "roll roll roll" through traffic lights and have killed pedestrians and the recieved just a fine.

I have a full respect for people who commute on a bike and I try make the road as safe as i can for them and other users. The over entitled ass hats in lycra who think they own the road are a blight on cycling in general. Not just bikes has an interesting video regarding the state of cycling in the USA because of the wishes of MAMILs.
