I love it when a mad man unilaterally starts wars in my name without my consent.

[–] Mrkawfee@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

The only consent he needed was Netanyahu's

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He probably forged your signature as well.

[–] leoj@piefed.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

DJ probably would have, except no one signed a formal declaration of war...

It's like when your parents in law invite themselves without asking you first and then deciding to rearrange your furniture.

... while killing your children and pets.

Okay, that might be a bad comparison.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

Didn't even ask me either.

Sometimes they’re not mad they’re just evil

[–] leoj@piefed.zip 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

madly evil.

Although I believe there is STRONG evidence that DJ is demented in an old person way, so I think mad fits.

Any reliable sauces yet?

So far it appears like all the articles have just parroted a tweet from the white house

[–] Sunforged@lemmy.ml 38 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It all seems like the White House made it up so they could claim a win by disarming mines that were never placed.

They are desperate for a narrative that makes them look competent.

I don’t know that that narrative would win them very much

The US removed all its mine sweepers from the Gulf

Also, even the threat of mines would make insurance prohibitively expensive and no ship would enter the area

[–] bulwark@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Iran has this capability and many people are worried they might do this. However, the fact that the information is coming from the current White House administration should be viewed with extreme scepticism. They have done nothing but lie to our faces since this war started.

Especially since Trump said their Navy was destroyed just a few days ago.

If their Navy was destroyed, what are they laying mines with?

Or is their Navy not as destroyed as he claimed?

If their Navy was destroyed, what are they laying mines with?

"Uh, donkey carts? Yes, it's donkey carts!"

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It seems to all be anonymously sourced. Still, the kind of thing I'd be really surprised if Iran didn't do

[–] Sunforged@lemmy.ml 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Why would they even need to?

They are clearly capable of shutting it down without the mines. They offered safe passage to any countries willing to expel US/Israeli diplomats yesterday.

What makes you think that?

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Because:

  • It's cheap
  • It's effective
  • It's hard for the US to prevent
  • They haven't gotten takers on their safe-passage thing
[–] Sunforged@lemmy.ml -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do you think a competent offer, that is looking to embarrass the western narrative would only be made available for less than 24 hours?

Stop and think man, these aren't blood crazed actors you have been told they are.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It still makes a lot of sense for them; a set of mines which Iran knows the location of would be pretty dramatically to their advantage, just as it did in the 1980s.

[–] Sunforged@lemmy.ml 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Drones didn't exist in 1980s. It is a completely different landscape.

The fact that the only source is the White House, the same White House posting gamer propaganda memes makes the entire thing suspect.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Land mines are still getting widely used in Ukraine despite there now being drones. Why is this any different?

[–] Sunforged@lemmy.ml 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The straight is a very narrow area to cover. Tankers are slow moving through the straight. It's just different than trying to deny a wide open space from both vehicles and infantry.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Still makes a lot of sense to me that they'd try to deploy at least some mines; needing an Iranian pilot to get through the strait would provide one more advantage.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Just that they weren't deployed in a way that prevents a pilot who knows where the mines are from avoiding them. In the 1980s, tankers regularly transited despite a risk of mines.

[–] blimthepixie@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 2 days ago

Brainwashed yank?

[–] evenglow@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

It's not if they would but able to. Some people think Iran's capability was destroyed.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I feel like if the whitehouse knew, they would stop it if they actually cared to. If they aren't stopping it, they want the mines there for political purposes or I wouldn't put it past this administration to put the mines themselves and blame Iran.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Iran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important energy chokepoint that carries about one-fifth of all crude oil, according to two people familiar with US intelligence reporting on the issue.

There's so much 'nonsensical' going on there.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago

Asking Saudi tankers to do in 2026 what Iranian dissidents were forced to do in 1988.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)
