Once again demonstrating how unreliable the American government has become.

It will be a very long time before the international community trusts America.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Or millenia, if at all...

The international community should think of the US as an adversary like Russia or North Korea because that is what it is now.

[–] FuckFascism@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

No, think of the worlds far right sympathizers like that, not all US citizens want this bullshit I sure as shit don't.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

Pariah state is the designation I have started to use.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 43 points 6 days ago

Good, the US can fuck right off. Trump is a nincompoop as are his followers. No way they’d be capable of solving a geopolitical conflict.

[–] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 33 points 6 days ago

I thought the invasion would end 80 days ago. Trump said so. 🤭🤡🤡🤡

[–] Zahtu@feddit.org 35 points 6 days ago (2 children)

And with the US-Ukraine Ressource Deal being singed too. So they bascically Held Ukraine at gunpoint Dekanding all their remaining Ressources while Russia raped them. The US is no longer trustworthy. They now sit Back, while Europe will have to steer the War Into a favorable direction, b/c they have to. If Russia eins or loses does Not Matter anymore for US, b/c they will benefit either way.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 days ago

The US is no longer trustworthy.

And it will take a lot of time and effort from the Americans to regain the trust of the international community.

[–] lewdian69@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I think the mineral deal is for future resources in unoccupied territory. If Russia wins US gets nothing right? So they can't really fully sit back. But I'll admit maybe I'm understanding wrong. The real key is that Trump got bored honestly.

[–] Zahtu@feddit.org 5 points 6 days ago

Except Trump is a puppet of Putins, to some degree. So he would Not Care about Russia occupiying Ukraine in any way, because He will still get His Deal. And in the mean time, Europe will continue to buy American Arms, making him and His größter Friends rich in the process. I would Not be surprised If He Starts selling weapons to both Sides.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Not exactly, it's resources in exchange for aid going forward in the form of arms.

[–] Birdie@thelemmy.club 30 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Putin wouldn't fold. Trump doesn't know how to handle that so he noped out.

[–] lewdian69@lemmy.world 30 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You mean Zelinsky wouldn't fold. Trump never wanted Putin to actually fold.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Zelensky folded. He signed the mineral deal.

[–] HowAbt2day@futurology.today 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

No peace talks means the US is uninterested in peace. Back to supporting war I suppose.

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yes. In exchange for minerals. That is the mineral deal.

Ukraine is selling off their country for this.

[–] mycall@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

For now. Deals don't last all that long, e.g. Budapest Memorandum

[–] lemmyhavesome@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

The deal he signed has little in common with the initial mineral deal, and this one is actually good for Ukraine.

[–] selkiesidhe@lemm.ee 15 points 6 days ago

A good thing. The orange cancer will side with Russia anyways. Wish more cough all cough countries would turn their backs and say piss off to that addled old twatwaffle.

[–] TheDeadlySquid@lemm.ee 6 points 5 days ago

Chalk up another failure of leadership.

[–] papertowels@mander.xyz 13 points 6 days ago

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

[–] Spzi@lemm.ee 11 points 6 days ago

Such a FLOTUS. It's all lies and empty promises, coated in idle boasting. What a fucking loser.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Good and stay out.

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 209 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Probably a good thing, the US sucked at it anyway. Ukraine was going to be forced to concede so much… Art of the Deal strikes again.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 77 points 1 week ago (12 children)

Nah, Trump got what he wanted, the minerals deal. Now he can keep sanctions on China for longer while we strip mine Ukraine for rare earth minerals.

[–] TranscendentalEmpire@lemm.ee 83 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Lol, we aren't going to be mining anything. Rare earth minerals aren't rare because they're only located in isolated places, they're rare because they are only present in small amounts when mining other materials.

The hard part is the refining of rare earth minerals because it requires large investments in refineries to separate the materials and consolidate them. Infrastructure that Ukraine or America haven't invested in.

The minerals deal is just something that trump can point to as a "win" when in reality it's not worth anything. Just like everything this administration does, it's nothing but smoke and mirrors.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 0 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

I’m aware, but they’re also unfortunately rare in the US, and we need batteries if we don’t maintain a good trade relationship with China.

[–] TranscendentalEmpire@lemm.ee 4 points 6 days ago

America actually has plenty of rare earth deposits, it's just not profitable to mine them and then build facilities to refine them.

Ironically, that might be the most useful contribution to eventual peace in Ukraine the US has made for some time now.

Thanks, I guess.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 112 points 1 week ago (2 children)

So much for ending the war in one day.

[–] taladar@sh.itjust.works 49 points 1 week ago

Well, at least the US did remove a giant obstacle to a lasting peace from the war - Trump.

This was pretty much what Michael Kofman predicted was going to happen months ago. As long as Russia feels that they can prevail militarily and is making maximalist demands based on that, and Ukraine is unwilling to accept those terms, there's not really much room for mutually-acceptable terms.

Even if they got something on paper, that's not likely to translate to a durable peace.
